Joe Mixon received his offer from The Ohio State University on January 12th. He was named the L.A. Rivals Camp MVP. On 3/15/13 Rivals gave him a 5th star and he released his top 16 (in no order): Ohio State, Oregon State, Tennessee, Washington, Cal, Georgia, Oklahoma, UCLA, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Texas A&M, Michigan, Clemson, Notre Dame, ASU, USC

I can't tell if his level of competition is just that bad... or he is just a beast. I would guess this kid goes PAC-12 though.
Look, the kid plays high school football in Cahleefornia. That aint Indiana for Pete's sake. The competition is there. This kid is the real deal, just looking at his video. I understand why the Buckeyes offered.
What I don't get is the discrepency between the height and weight: 6' vs. 6'2" and weight of 180lbs vs. 195lbs. He looks closer to the 6'2 and 195lbs to me.

IMO this kid should be the only runningback we take in this class. I honestly feel like he is better than Hurd. Hurd is a terrific athlete, Joe Mixon seems like a pure runningback.

he does seem like a pure RB. powerful already but definitely has the frame to put on weight. i think he'll probably do a best of the midwest tour (visits to osu, nd, and michigan), but it will be hard to pull him from the west coast

FWIW Jester, I first joined Scout's message boards almost ten years ago and that was after a couple of years of just reading the boards and articles, much like I did on here.
I apologize for upsetting you Niblick. I've never claimed to be an insider or even trying to help the staff (except maybe when I sport my 11W shirt). I've only tried to post info on here that I enjoy and I think others would too; along with sharing my point of view on mainly Ohio State sports. I guess that's what I thought the functions of these message boards were. I've never meant to upset you or anyone else on here. I don't have a staff, or even Mod, emblem next to my name that would indicate me to be any type of insider. I put a link to my source and didn't try to claim it as any type of inside or original information. The last time I had any real inside info was probably when I sat next to Dustin Fox in a class. He was cool and really nice, but never divulged too much to me. If you think that my message board handle of Gray Box is an attempt at me trying to pose as an insider, I apologize for that as well. I just tried pick something that would stay relevant for awhile and wouldn't go out of date; like the first name I picked for Scout almost ten years ago. That one did not really stand the test of time. Please let me know if you have any suggestions on how I can better contribute to these boards as that's why I post on here. I do it to try to pass on info I think is relevant to these boards but isn't already posted (I know this might not have been the best info/source but there is more to it then this I just don't want to bore people and Joe Mixon is the kind of recruit that even without an offer I like knowing about so I figured others would too). One reason why I don't go to that site, some of them claim to be "insiders" or whatnot. People make mistakes, I have as well and recieved a good thrashing or two.
I understand some points people are making but this is a free site, people can come and go as they please and post any info they may have or want to share as long as they are doing it by the 11W guidelines.
I for one, appreciate the extra hand Gray Box has given for the forums. Just trying to make this site all the more better and the #1 site for Buckeye fans to go to.
Just know that if someone posts wrong info, they usually are corrected by someone else and we all move on and say our thanks yous.

So far Gray Box has been a decently valuable contributor. It is just silly to jump on him without cause just from concern of what some others previously have done.
You are nailing it squirrel, everyone is just another poster until they build up credibility, and gray has been pretty darn good. Just posting what he finds, I love that he, and so many others, do the work for me.

Joe Mixon has gotten an offer from tOSU! I mentioned this that Saturday and was told by people he didn't have an offer. I was under the impression that tOSU had offered him on Saturday but he hadn't been to school yet to receive it so even he may not have known about it yet(as even Mixon was saying he didn't have an offer). He didn't have school on Monday, and now on Tuesday, it appears he has an offer! I really like this kid, kind of cut from the Rod Smith mold, and think he could play multiple positions. If you haven't watched his highlight videos I suggest you watch both of them. What do you guys think? How high is he on your want list?
I for one, and i am sure there are many others, appreciate any info from any reliable source. Thanks to the 11w staff and graybox.

I'd like to throw a quick thanks to gray box for what he's done in his short time on this site. Sure, he's not an "insider", just like the rest of us, but like GSW, he compiles information that many of wouldn't be able to do ourselves, and the information is welcome. My year anniversary with this site was a few days ago, and I've really appreciated all the information I've recieved through the site, and so I'd just like to quickly thank posters like this that help out the community

Thanks everyone that posted on here and likes what I contribute! I tried to upvote you all just to show a little bit of my appreciation. I've posted on many message boards over many years and 11W is by far one of the best and Gene, your Quick Bits are some of the best posts that I've read on any message boards ever! They are one of the main reasons I come to 11W and I would venture to guess that I'm not alone. You are right, I'm just trying to add even more info to these already amazing boards. I try not to step on your toes (although I'm sure I do from time to time, which I apologize for) or anyone else's toes. There are probably 10+ Ohio State sites, all with multiple staff members and most with message boards full of people posting about The Ohio State University. I'm just trying to add the little bit of info that does pass through the cracks (I know it's not much as the staff and Gene are straight ballers when it comes to getting the info out and fast). I'll try to be deligante in getting my facts stragint before posting (thanks to Gene I know that that site isn't the most credible now) and hope you guys like what I do post as I love most of the stuff everyone one here posts! Ok, I'm done pontificating. Now back to Joe Mixon...anyone think he gets an actual tOSU offer? Anyone want him to get an offer? Anyone think that between Campbell and other recruits they don't really go after Mixon?
I think Campbell definitely fills a slot/ATH slot, of which I'd think they have maybe one more. From what we know now, the spot would likely be filled by Myles Autry, John Haden, or someone else who might come onto the radar. Second tier at that position would be less likely guys like Mixon, Speedy Noil, Kiy Hester, and others.
I would think Autry would be the staff's top choice at the moment, if not one of the most likely choices. I don't think haden gets in the class unless he can fill one of these spots, because he doesn't translate well to other positions. It's arguable because some staffs (UM) clearly have no issue with DBs that are 5'8'' or 5'9'', but it seems this staff wants to recruit long, lean athletes in the secondary, and I don't think Haden has the tools to be a pure WR.
Very good points I.8! Do you think Mixon and Campbell fill the same position or do you see them more like EzE and Wilson where one is more of a pure back and one is a slot/ATH? I see Mixon, at 6'2" 195lbs, as more of a big back like Rod Smith (or even Hyde/Dunn/Ball) although I don't see it out of the question that Campbell could bulk up and maybe even resemble Hyde(although that might be wishful thinking). I'm not sure if Meyer wants any bigger backs in this vain after Dunn and Ball, but Mixon looks to have the speed to play for Meyer plus the size of a more traditional tOSU back. He may not leave the west coast, if we even offer him, but I think he could be a great power/speed back for Urban. You may have a different view or more info to fill me in on though.
I see Mixon being split out and used more as a WR with his size. he's tall, but I don't think he's a bruiser. I think the only pure RB this staff wants ideally is Jalen Hurd, out of TN. He's got size and strength, is built like a truck, but is long and lean at the same time, and would be an extremely versatile prospect at a deep position.
The second tier in my view, are guys that the staff is looking at, but with a smaller class, really only as consolation prizes if we can't get Hurd. This group includes Derrell Scott, Mikel Horton, Nick Chubb (who I think the staff likes almost as much as Hurd), Mikale Wilbon, Elijiah Hood, and a few other local guys.
You maybe right I.8 there just maybe too many guys ahead of him to get an offer. Hurd is a beast and I'd love to get him and Kelly out of Tennessee. If we got those two and kept Andrew Gantz, Tennessee may do something drastic after we also just got Bell! I really like Chubb too! I don't think Mixon is a bruiser like them and Hood, but he has size and it appears even more speed. I like that combo a lot. We've seen glimpses of it with Rod Smith, when he hangs on to the ball, and I think that's why I'm excited for Mixon. I think you're right about him getting lined up at WR sometimes as well if he came here. We likely don't have the numbers but if we could add Mixon, Hurd, and Autry (then Haden or Chubb or Hood) to go with Campbell, I think that would be killer! Although if we get Hurd we may not really go after the others besides Autry or another Marshall/Wilson type back. SOO much talent Urban is in on! Do you think personally think Mixon is worthy of an offer now or would you wait on others first?
I like Mixon a lot and I think he should get offered, and he likely will, but when I watch his tape, I see a WR, not a RB. I think the staff should try to bring him into a camp setting, get him running some routes, checking out his ceiling at a different position, and then make a judgement call from there. He's got size and is fast enough to be a solid WR in a system like ours. As far as the WR crop for the '14 class, I think we take 2-3 true WRs. The top of my list is a taller guy. I think big guys who get scouted to be a target that Stoneburner was meant to be at the WR position this past season are vastly underrated in the spread. My top choice at WR is Dallis Todd out of La Mirada, offered last week. As far as the other 1-3, I want a mix of any of this group: Drake Harris, Marshon Lattimore, Artavis Scott, Trevion Thompson and Saeed Blacknail. The disclaimer here is obviously that we don't really know where Lattimore will play, and many see him on the defensive side of the ball. I believe he'll be a guy like Gareon Conley, where they discuss the idea of playing wherever he'd like to play, and then work with the depth chart with these long, powerful athletes that are fairly variable as far as position. If the top choices fall through, I'd be satisfied with picks out of Thad Snodgrass, Mark Andrews, Jalen Brown, Demarre Kitt, Dominique Booth, Derek Kief and Lonnie Johnson.
My predictions are:
Slot ATH: Campbell Jr., Autry.
WR: Todd, Kitt, Johnson.
RB: Hurd
This is the type of post I wish I could upvote more than once I.8. If we get your predictions I'll be extremely stoked! Todd is quick and has good hands for his size. He may fill the role I was hoping T.Y. was going to fill. I really want Kitt and he maybe a good way to help the Georgia ball rolling too. Johnson is really the only one on your list I think I might be personally willing to get someone else instead, and don't get me wrong, he looks like a good one! I would not be disappointing if we got him. I like Lattimore, but like you said he could be on the D side of the ball, and maybe could squeeze Mixon in as H-back or something?! Taking upwards of five O-lineman and a QB doesn't leave much room for these other guys in one the offensive side of the ball in a small class. Thad Snodgrass, Mark Andrews, Jalen Brown, Dominique Booth, and Derek Kief; too many to take them all! The good news is that our plan B and even C guys seem to all be very high caliber with little drop off from our plan A guys. As much as I like Mixon, it's harder and harder for me to see him in this class.
I think we end up with 4 OLs, 2 WRs, 2 ATHs, 1 RB, 1 QB, 1 TE, 3 DLs, 3 LBs, 3 DBs.
If more attrition occurs after spring ball, and before/during fall camp, I think we'll see the staff look at more linemen, and maybe an additional WR and DB.
Hopefully the class doesn't end up too small. Like you said, there isn't much of a drop-off in talent after the top tier, but the more players you can get, the better you hedge your bets. Sure, you can get Demarre Kitt, and say no to Lonnie Johnson due to class size, but in a year where you have a larger class, maybe you take both of them, giving you better odds at a player that actually pans out.
It makes it very tough for the staff to evaluate talent, due to a small margin for error. That said, being a player in this staff's system means that if you aren't pulling your weight, the staff will be straight with you, and the players that aren't buying in tend to ship out. I suspect ~20 will be the expected probable median for this class after things pan out.
Those numbers seem right to me although, knowing Urban we may need to add one to the DL or LBs(with McMillian, Booker, Garrett and Berger). Mixon was just named #82 best prospect on Rivals Top 100 for 2014 today. He is the #8 RB on the list but only behind Hurd, and actually in front of Chubb, on the list of RBs we've been talking about. Although Hood is an ATH on here and ranked even higher then Hurd and WR Lattimore and Kitt are higher then Mixon too. Your boys Blaning and Brown are overall #4 and #6 receptively and my man Kelly is #59. Dang Urban is in on some good guys! (I think I'm hijacking my own thread...) Click here for the full list.

Mixon is a dual-threat type of running back. While he can be a great running back, he can also be moved out to receiver at times. He has great vision but can use work on being more physical and his breakout speed at times. Whomever gets him will be able to even utilize him at receiver or in the slot.
Right now, he isn't as high on my list. I would want Hurd, Hood, & Scott before anybody else.

There are a few guys I want more then Mixon, like Hurd, but I think his speed and size combo bring something unique for this class. His ablity to play different possitions has him a little higher on my want list, but like I said, there are some still ahead of him. Like BUCKEYENINJA said though, I'd love to get him and Hurd; throw in Autry, as I kind of think Mixon fits in between Hurd and Autry, and I would be stoked! Again, thanks for sharing Gene!

Mixon reminds of TJ Yeldon. Just instant burst & acceleration to top speed with a good blend of balance & power.
Let's not forget that we have EZE for the next 3-4 years too people, he's 6'0 200 with all of these qualities too & while it's good to stockpile talent, the RBs will probably go only 3 deep tops I'd think given we're not taking guys to simply redshirt them, especially with guys like Wilson & Marshall who can run like the wind too.
I wonder how Urban would plan to get all these guys touches? Hmmm....

+1 Good points Game Time! I haven't forgot about EzE or any of the other guys. I think EzE may be a great one for Urban! He is one of the reasons I like Mixon a lot too. I think it would be easier to get EzE and Mixon on the feild over some of the other pure backs we are looking at. He has the size to be a RB or WR and possibly block much better then a smaller guy at the slot or WR. His size to block and create miss matches is something I really like. We are really deep at RB, but like this past year, you can never tell who will get injured, fumble too much, or someother reason they may not be on the feild. The size of this class may not allow it but I think the staff wants two RBs. Mixon's potential to play multiple positions makes him even more valuble in my eyes when considering that this will likely be a smaller class. It's kind of crazy to think that when this class comes in we should still have Rod Smith, Dunn, Ball and EzE along with Marshall and Wilson. I think some one with Mixon's size and versitlity could see more playing time sooner then a guy coming in behind that talent as a pure RB.
I think Urban's willingness to use the diamond formation will help get more players touches. If they don't, they may end up transfering, which is another reason to get more then one RB in this class. I don't know exactly how Urban will do it, but I know Urban will get the ball in the hands of his play makers!
I like this kid a lot. Props to Gray Box for the early find. With Hurd's recruitment probably going to next February, this was a great offer. Dude is smooth, explosive, and can probably add 20 lbs easily to add power to his slashing. Cuz he slashes.

Nice find. Knew he was planning to enroll early, thought that would mean early announcement. I don't think the staff wants to wait until December, although he's not a kid you turn away. Hopefully he sees the class filling up and jumps on board

Wow. This kid gets up to speed in a hurry. Thats an impressive highlight reel. He would look great in Scarlet and Gray. When hes running North and South, which is surprisingly most of the time, hes to the second level at the snap of the finger!

I mentioned this on an earilier thread. It seems to me that many coaches/teams almost are waiting to see if Ohio State/Urban offer a kid before they do. It's as if they need the validation that, "OK, this kid must be pretty good if Urban's offering him. Let's offer him as well."

At this point I really don't know. He seemed to be pretty excited to get an Ohio State offer, but literally right after his recruitment seemed to blow up with five SEC offers and one from Georgia Tech all the same week tOSU offered. Hopefully some more info will come our soon, however with the new Hurd rumors maybe Ohio State cools on Mixon. I think Mixon is a diverse enough player to have them both, but who knows what the staff thinks.
I'd love to see Ohio State still pursue Mixon even if they do land Hurd. That kid looks really good.

I'm pretty sure he is wide open right now, but he's more familiar with Cal and Washington since they jumped on him early in the process. I don't believe he'll end up at either one. He's pretty much wide open right now.
If we get Hurd do we have the space for Mixon? I just don't see it with all the depth on the team currently and eZe and Dontre we are kinda stacked at RB, IMO.
Even with Hurd, you add a RB the claiber of Joe Mixon. 2 RB in a class isnt too much and there is talk of possibly moving Hurd to a different position because of his height. Other classes don't count like '13 because you can never be certain which Rbs pan out or stay healthy.

Uodate: Mixon received his 34th and 35th offers today from Miami (FL) and FSU respectively.
Update: Mixon is at USC's Junior Day along with other Buckeye targets WR Dallis Todd and TE-LB Tyler Luatua. While at camp, Mixon received his 36th offer when USC offered him.
Joe Mixon was got an invite to play in the All American game in Texas next year. Mixon has stated saying he would likely announce his college decision at the game if he was invited. He could announce earlier, but based on what he has said in the paste, as of now, it appears he will announce at the game.

Updated: Last weekend Joe Mixon was named the L.A. Rivals Camp MVP. On 3/15/13 Rivals gave him a 5th star and he released his top 16 (in no order): Ohio State, Oregon State, Tennessee, Washington, Cal, Georgia, Oklahoma, UCLA, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Texas A&M, Michigan, Clemson, Notre Dame, ASU and USC. These are the schools he will keep in touch with still.
6 of his schools are in the top 16 (but you have to assume asu, osu (oregon state), and ucla probably won't be huge factors. ucla maybe, they finished last years class strong with some great DBs.

and then there's oklahoma
tough to pull him out of the west coast, but the fact that he has a group of midwest schools relatively close (comparatively), means all have a good chance at unofficial visits and making his next cut, whether it's a top 10 or 8. get him on campus, and there's always a chance
I never looked at Mixon when I was hearing we were a lock for the higher ranked Hurd. Boy was I an idiot. This kid passes the eye test no doubt!
I like this highlight video much better. After watching these two videos and knowing that we already have Dontre Wilson and James Clark, does anybody else feel like they want Mixon and Autry most on offense? Mixon looks like he has all the assets to be an extremely good running back in the future. Even Deion Sanders said he was PrimePrep. When I watch his highlights, I feel like I'm looking back on someone who already had an amazing college career. His juke move is like no other I've seen and having guys like him and Autry who can make people miss seems just like the type of players who can make this offense unstoppable. Of all the prospects that hold offers from Ohio State and not yet committed, my top 2 RBs on my list are Elijah Hood & Joe Mixon. Not so sure Autry will be at the RB position if he came to Ohio State.
where do you see him playing? and mixon seems to be the better one to invest time/resources in. hood has all but said he's staying south (but i don't know if he's released a new top 5 list), and the fact that he said that after visiting schools like osu, nd, and michigan, makes it that much less likely that he ever comes back visiting
Autry would be suited as a slot WR that can double as a ball carrier on jet sweeps. Even with Dontre and Clark you take kids like Autry bc there are no guarantees how they'll pan out. Urban's rule on recruiting and motivating current players is telling them their out there trying to find kids who are better than them.
