I've got a good/bad feeling

This 2014 class is limited in numbers right now and I think prospects know it, as it is no coincidence we already have 5 verbals.  I know nothing is solid until NLOI day but it's obvious the class is going to fill up rather quickly with hella good prospects, which is a good feeling....the bad feeling is a lot of people are gonna be upset when we hit a dry spell as far as gray boxes go when our class initially "fills up"

The class will be somewhere between 17-22 commits, so I think we'll be okay. Yes it'll fill up fast, and it'll be a hell of a class. This isn't bad at all. If people get upset over "dry spells" in recruiting, they need to reconsider where they are in their lives.

Yeah, our 2014 class should be full up by, say, next weekend.  In March we can start in on '15.

As long as the class is a top five and we get the players we want I don't care when it fills up.

Its not a bad thing our class is filling up early, it shows kids wanna play for Urban. Its not like were going after bad talent either. I know I mentioned this is another thread but I was worried taking Zekes commitment last winter when we were recruiting Green cuz I had no clue who he was and was all about Green. Trust the staff they know what they're doing. We need OL for this class and have 2 of the best in Ohio committed. Webb is a lockdown corner and will be one of the top ranked DBs in the 2014 class. Marshall is a speed rusher off the edge and will be solid front 7 help maybe a DE that moves to LB like Shazier did or just plays the Viper position. Campbell was the only one I was curious about until I heard he went off for 150+ yds and 3 TDs in the state championship game. He comes from a very football rich area (NE Ohio) and is teammates of Booker. We'll probably take 20-24 guys next year depending on attrition and I'm very excited about the 5 we have starting off the class

Anyone that wants to play for us better get in early. I'm not worried about a gray box drought. Fill er up as quickly as ya want.

Dido. I could care less when it fills up just as long as it's filled with quality players that fill wholes and make our Buckeyes better.

After the way this class finished we should all have complete faith in Urban and company. The days of the signing day blues have been buried with the JT era. If anyone complains about Urbans recruiting style after this legendary finish will never be happy no matter what. The man is the best recruiter ever to step foot in Columbus. Urban will bring the best possible athletes to fit his system and he will not only dominate the bigten but he will have multiple national championship runs. Last year began a golden era in Ohio State football so sit back, relax and get ready to witness history.

So how may top players will Urban save a spot for no matter how long they take to make a decision? Hurd, McMillan, Peppers, a couple OL?, Lattimore, Garrett?

Yep, it's a good problem to have....I started this thread mainly joking about the fact that some people get worked up about waiting for the next commit, and I can see this class being around 13-15 by the time the 2013 season starts

Yep def a good prob to have not sure if they will get that high in numbers that early. It would be great but I would think somewhere in the 8-10 range only bc of numbers right now.

moreso the same angst we "all" (me included) felt on signing day. We tend to forget about the Joey Bosa, Eli Apple, Cam Burrows etc.. commits we already have in the fold.

I think Urban's trying to make sure to get the Ohio and mid-west kids wrapped up first as mich beat us to the punch on the few we lost (main because mich offered and committed to these kids first)... many of the biggest SEC country and national recruits seem to like waiting until later / closer to signing day to choose/commit so the 2nd half the the 2014 class is probably going to be more of these kids.

I think it makes sense to work on securing the Ohio/mid-west border for most of the first half of the class then getting out in the second half of recruiting season to put the full court press on the nation recruits.

I don't think it will be an issue. FYI, there were 5 verbals by the end of last February too. Urban got early commits from Apple, Burrows, Lisle, Marshall and Billy Price all by February 28th. this cycle will die down for a bit and will see a few come on board around April before, during and after the spring game.

You will still be stressing over the last 2-3 in the class come this time next year, don't you worry!

Let us also, not forget, that some of our earliest commits were the best recruiters to this class.

All of our commits are from ohio and mich leaving me to believe that urbans going after the very top talent from both states leaving hoke alot less options. We both seem to offer similar players nationally and we all see how urban does on that front getting some of the best payers out of the best states. Urban has had much more success and is a rock star on tha national scene. If we have to go head to head with hoke for any national players urbans record and current successs will win out 90 percent of the time. Just like last year our players will come in waves and I wouldn't doubt if Meyer plans when some announce to have a steady presence in the recruiting world all year. Like Meyer said at first we were rushing to get anyone we could now we're "selecting" certain players. Sounds good to me  keep up the incredible effort.

To be fair, UM is still takig some very good players from Ohio that OSU is missing out on. Dymonte, Ferns (still time to flip?), McCray ( I think we did ok after he said no though ;) ), etc. I'm glad we can steall a few out of Mich that UM needs though, let's just not forget that UM is not exactyl standing by and doing nothing about  it.

Michigan has nabbed a few Ohio prospects with OSU offers, but most of that success can be attributed as much to temporary turmoil surrounding Tatgate as it can to Hoke's recruiting prowess. We all know the Kalis saga, and I think it's pretty clear that without the Tatgate tumult, he'd have been a Buckeye.  The story I remember regarding Dymonte is that he wanted to come in for a visit way back before the Tatgate scandal broke, but Bollman --who was leading his recruitment-- put him off for some reason.  He felt snubbed, liked michigan, and once JT was gone this was an uphill battle. By the time Urban offered him it was too late.  Obviously can't say for sure, but I think he'd have been a Buckeye had he been shown the love earlier.  Similar story with McCray.  Urban had just come in and wasn't ready to offer a player he wasn't familiar with.  Perhaps he misjudged how long McCray would wait for an offer, but Hoke got his paws on him and that was it.  Again, the unusual circumstances surrounding the coaching change were likely the deciding factor with McCray.  Ferns just didn't seem to like Columbus; that will happen from time to time.  There simply is no way to get every recruit you want.  Other than the four prospects just mentioned, who did Hoke get out of Ohio that we really wanted at OSU?  My point is that without the aid of a unique set of circumstances --a set of circumstances we are hopefully unlikely to see again-- Hoke would've been far less successful in Ohio, and will be less successful in Ohio going forward.

steensn's picture
steensn on 11 Feb 2013 - 1:07pm #

There is always a "reason" for why recruits go places, my only point is that UM is not sitting idol and is having success nabbing a few guys that tOSU did want. A lot? Maybe not, but it is worth noting. I am sure that Urban knows this and is trying to figure out how to limit/stop it all together.

Of course there is always "a reason" recruits go elsewhere. My point is that the reason the recruits I mentioned went elsewhere is unlikely to be repeated anytime soon.

The big stress in the recruiting cycle isn't going to be the "lull," it's going to be the constant nagging fear that some highly-touted commit is going to flip or take another official visit to God-only-knows-where University... NSD14 is a long, long way away, after all...

Very good point, I remember talks this time last year "Oh we can only take 18, maybe 20" then "21-22" then "who the heck knows..."

It is nice that we didn't oversign because that means any attrition then opens up a sport for next year. Guys alway leave and with Urban being so open with what he thinks their chances are it seems more likely.

The only thing about signing guys now is that it becomes even more apparent who the cream of the crop is after their senior season.

I understand it's not the same as a college junior yr vs senior yr, but just think about how much a guys perceived draft stock (or his overall rating) can change from the end of his junior yr to the end of his senior yr in college.

You want to wrap up guys early but I think there's a little more risk involved.

This^^^^

18-20 recruits in 2014 class... I'm not sure where 22 or more is coming from.  If you do the math...20 will be the most that can be brought in unless there's a lot of attrition.  At this rate....it's going to be full by the end of the season...and I'm sure they'll be two or three that announce at UA or Army All Star games.  But most will be in early and I don't see many going elsewhere.  Once they commit....they're not going anywhere.  I'm sure the coaches are explaining how important the numbers thing is this year and I doubt we'll see many defect.  Go Bucks!

Remember though, last year's class started at an estimate of about 18, and then we had quite a few scholarships vacated during the spring. I'd be shocked if this didn't happen again, albeit on a smaller scale due to the lack of transition. I think spring attrition will hedge number for the 2013 class, and then open spots for 2014, future attrition notwithstanding.

I said last year this class of 2013 would have 22 or more....it did.  If you really want to go back and scour all the articles from back in April of last year...you can.  This class with the loss of Jrs and Srs moving on as well as some who's names will remain silent...it would only be at 18-21 at the most.  If there's 22-24...I'd be shocked...yes.
