None of them must be from TX. The Horns better wake up. They are entering an era of complacency that will have them out of the top tier for years to come.
What's happening is that the AD, DeLoss Dodds, is planning to retire soon (likely 2014, but 2015 at the latest). It doesn't make a whole lot of sense for him to make head coaching changes for underperforming sports like BB and FB. The next AD will want to bring in his own guys.
Were Dodds retiring this year, Mack and (especially) Barnes would likely be gone this year (per the overwhelming sentiment of boosters). As it stands, they will probably be replaced by the next AD. Assuming neither programs starts overacheiving. Which *might* happen in FB, but definitely not in BB.
I kinda see UT as that nice program with the nice old coach. Gotten complacent and lack the killer instinct. Believe me, Mack did wonders for them, but I think his time is up. I was never in favor of the "coach in waiting", but it appears that Muschamp is living up to the bill. Will be interesting to see who they hire. Sad that the fanbse and passionate alumni have to await the new regime.
To be fair, Texas is one of those programs that offers all their top choice local guys first and then branches out. There isnt a Texan DL until #28, everyone is either in VA, GA, NC, or MI.
Urban Meyer >>> Mack Brown
putting on a clinic on how to recruit...
Mack has his national title already. He's running a well-oiled machine down there that is an absolute cash cow. The program may appear a bit apathetic, but they'll probably have Mack coach a few more years, then let him retire on his terms (the situation seems very similar to UNC basketball with Williams winning a title and then 'coasting' as they are doing now). A few good years, a few not so good. Making money regardless. I'm not from Austin, but it seems like there is a lot more to do around there and a 'pretty good' football team is fine with them instead of demanding an annual top 5-10 team. Maybe i'm wrong?
And he should be calling Vince Young every day to thank him for that title.
And Reggie Bush for acting as though he was a drunk option quarterback
I would not say Mack is running a "well-oiled machine" down here. He has lost quite a few assistants over the past few years, not all of them to HC positions. UT *may* let him retire on his own terms, but the new AD will have a big say in that.
The fans and boosters are in no way satisfied with having a "pretty good" football team anymore than OSU or Bama fans would be. Texas is (supposed to be) one of the premier FB programs in the country. His seat isn't as hot as Kiffin's, but it's toasty nonetheless!
But, yes, there is plenty to do in Austin!
Urban knows how to win national titles and it's a speed defense that disrupts the QB's rhythm. We are going to see a totally different type of team than we have ever seen before... He seems like he's on a personal mission to dominate college football again and nothing will stop him.
