Ohio State recruiting: State Secrets, 1/31 - OSU target announcement schedule and more
We're officially less than a week away from National Signing Day 2013. While some questions remain up in the air (like where Dontre Wilson's surprise visit to Texas came from, supposedly just weeks after he told them "thanks, but no thanks"), others, such as when certain commits are going to announce where they'll be playing their college football, are rapidly becoming clearer and clearer.
In the last few days alone, we've gotten clarity on when WR/ATH Ryan Timmons would be tipping his hand, when Buckeye target WR James Clark would make things official, and even when Ezekiel Elliott, he of having just visited Missouri two weeks before Signing Day (and Ohio State commit), would be making things officially official. Of course, there are are plenty of unknowns out there too: how far is Urban Meyer willing to push the bar from a roster sense under the pretenses he'll have (or be able to help create) additional churn? Can the Buckeyes make do on the offensive line if they aren't able to replace Joey O'Connor in the 2013 class? And will Kerry Coombs and Mike Vrabel get the long overdue Red Bull endorsement contracts they so sorely deserve?
We'll start with something we got a few emails about in the last day or so, and that's clarifying what the next six days will look like in terms of who's committing and when. These are all certainly prone to change at any moment, but as of now, this is what we know specifically about which 2013 Ohio State targets will commit:

Ohio State football: It’s a tossup among remaining recruits
Dontre Wilson plans to make an official visit to Texas this weekend, but that doesn’t mean the all-purpose back from DeSoto, Texas, has written off Ohio State.
“Yes, Ohio State has a chance,” Wilson’s high-school coach, Claude Mathis, told The Dispatch by text message last night.
It probably won’t be over until Wednesday, the first day that national letters of intent can be signed. Wilson committed to Oregon but is reconsidering since coach Chip Kelly left for the NFL. Texas entered the picture recently after another recruit switched his commitment to Texas Christian.
Running back Ezekiel Elliott of St. Louis, who committed to Ohio State but visited Missouri last weekend, has gone mum on whether he plans to stay with the Buckeyes.

Ohio State interested in Lakota East junior OL Jarrett LaRubbio
Ohio State is interested in Lakota East junior offensive lineman Jarrett LaRubbio, according to Lakota East coach Rick Haynes.
LaRubbio, who is 6 feet 5 and 265 pounds, has offers from Akron, Pittsburgh, Bowling Green, Toledo and Ohio University. He was second-team all-district and first-team all-GMC in 2012.
Ohio State coach Urban Meyer and assistant Kerry Coombs were at Lakota East earlier today, according to Haynes.
College coaches make final push for Vonn Bell
With National Signing Day less than a week away, the rush of coaches trying to sway Ridgeland High All-America safety Vonn Bell is reaching its peak. Coaches from all three of Bell’s finalists — Alabama, Ohio State and Tennessee — are scheduled to be in town Thursday to make their final pitch for his signature.
College coaches are not allowed to have contact with recruits after this weekend, giving prospects a three-day period of silence to make their decision before Wednesday morning. The head coaches from Bell’s finalists have already used their one allotted personal visit with Bell, but assistants from all three of his finalists will meet with him Thursday.
Ohio State co-defensive coordinator Everett Withers was at Ridgeland on Thursday morning and left campus to meet with Bell’s father, Vincent, at his job.

Desoto High School blue chip football prospect to make decision on Sunday
When Chip Kelly announced that he was resigning as head football coach of the University of Oregon football program to become the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, Dontre Wilson de-committed to Oregon.
The Desoto High School (TX) all-purpose running back opened up his recruitment and has trimmed the list to 3-schools: Texas, Ohio State, and Oregon.
According to Rivals.com, Wilson is a 4-start recruit who is the 100th ranked recruit in the country.
I spoke to his high school head coach, Claude Mathis, this afternoon. Mathis said he expects Wilson will choose between the Longhorns, Ohio State, and Oregon on Sunday.
Class of 2014 brimming with football talent
Urban Meyer walked into Palm Beach Central High School on Monday and got some bad news from hotly recruited Broncos junior offensive tackle Kc McDermott.
"Are we in your top five?" the Ohio State coach asked, according to a source's account of the meeting.
"No, sir," McDermott replied, never losing eye contact.
Meyer responded, "Are you considering us at all?"
"No, sir," McDermott said.
Even the most famous college football coaches should expect similar conversations with several Palm Beach County players during the next year. The county's 2014 class of prospects, one of the top local classes in recent history, could boast more than 35 FBS signees next year, up from an expected 25 or so this year.

Intersting that Urban went to visit Barker. I wonder how that went? I would like to see him offered, he seems like one of those QB's that just goes out and gets it done. May not be the fastest guy or have the best arm out of the QB's on our list, but he is just an impressive QB.
Don't get me wrong though, i would still love to have Watson. That kid is going to be a stud
I believe I read somewhere a few weeks back that Barker was getting frustrated with not having an offer from OSU. Also read that he wants to commit sometime in the spring. I believe he ends up at UK or USCe.
Im just stoked that Urban was in the 45040/069!! I woulda rolled out the red carpet!
Ah you're a Mason guy then!
I love seeing Urban at my Alma Matter. Though I question if he was actually there to talk to players, Mason is pretty undermatched vs the prenial powerhouses of cincy.
You're right to question that. I ran into them and Kerry told me they were just making rounds to many of the larger Cincy area high schools to talk to coaches, get to know them, their players, and who to watch. They made it sound as if they weren't talking to any players today.
Can confirm, he was at my school too just to talk to coaches. It was still pretty exciting seeing him in the hallway haha
I just think it's awesome that someone from my old high school is actually being recruited for football. East has been awful at football for a LONG time now.
I wouldn't cheer for Michigan if they were playing the Taliban.
I just do not understand why top rated OTs are not beating down the door trying to be a part of this class. The opportunity is huge. Come in and get a year of a great strength program and learning the system under your belt and then be ready to challenge for a starting spot in '14. Come and get it!
Part of it is the spread offense imo. It is difficult to attract elite 4* and 5* OL recruits to a spread offense because they don't feel (misconception?) that they'll get drafted as easily as they would from a pro-style offense. The NFL is changing though. QBs that run the spread are becoming more attractive, and so OL who have experience blocking in the spread will become more attractive.
I don't think it's a fluke that as soon as Michigan hired Hoke, who has made it known he wants to move to a pro-style offense, they started attracting 4* after 4* OL. Urb has also managed to grab some elite OL over the years (Pounceys for one), just not at the sort of rate that a school like Alabama (pro-style) is able to.
so we have missed out on all targets we had! now we seem to be missing on this new kid!
Note to staff: We should prolly bank the schollie for a great 2014 OL instead of reaching for 2013 just to get a body. sometimes just getting a body can backfire on you. like 2011 class with Bobek, underwood, Brown, & Carter. seemed like we were desperate for OL that year and missed on 4 as far as im concerned.
I know the staff might know something we dont, but after so many misses and going so far down the totem pool, its about time we just learn to bank the schollie instead of offering some guys that can be considered a "reach"
#Buckeyes
They are not going to offer somebody they think cannot contribute. There is no reason so far for anybody to question the offers this staff makes.
never once said i was questioning the offers this staff makes/made. Im saying its prolly time now that we move on from the OL situation. Im saying from here on out its prolly good to just bank the schollie.
#Buckeyes
Alabama just offered Ezekiel Elliott
Yea, they need another RB. Last I heard they were trying to figure how they could possibly make room if Vonn Bell committed. This is crazy.
Add FSU to the offer list as well
According to Bob Hunter this morning, 'bama offered Zeke as a defensive back.

Don't they have 3 already committed, and no room for Bell supposedly? What is going on here?

Wow what douches. They have like 3/4 4/5 * tailbacks already. They don't have a chance imho. Matter of fact I hope bulimia flips tenpenny to arkansas lol

I feel like Saban is trolling here
Dear Mr. Elliot, we would love for you to come and play some type of defensive backfield position for the reigning national champion!
Elliot: WTF.........?
Oh hell!! I hope their is nothing to this and Alabama is too late to the party.Zeke is the only one that scares me,even though everyone keeps saying he's all Buckeye. With him going silent, just worries me til i's are dotted and t's are crossed.
SCOTTC.
Does this mean zeke is not keeping quiet by talking to other teams
Just cause they offer him doesn't mean he's talking to them.
Everyone know Meyer and Saban are nemesises. This is just Saban trying to take a shot at Meyer.
This just tells me Alabama is worried about the bucks O-H!
I got you buddy!
I-O!
Shame on those who left a fellow Buckeye hanging. Not the same at all, but I always feel ackward when I give an O-H shout to someone wearing Buckeye garb in a public place and all I get is a blank stare.
HAHA! I actually did this to a fellow buckeye once. I was walking around in Hoboken, NJ with my brother-in-law and I had forgotten all about the fact that I was wearing an Ohio State tee shirt. We passed a group of guys and one of the guys threw out an O-H!!! I was off in my own world and didn't even notice until my brother-in-law elbowed me and said: Hey that guy must be an OSU fan! And it finally clicked after the poor guy was a half a block away, so I swung around and gave him a loud and proud I-O!!!!! He turned around and gave me a fist pump waved.
There was another Buckeye at a resort in Riviera Maya in Mexico this past summer, we both wore our OSU garb everywhere and no matter what we exchanged the O-H, I-O whenever we saw eachother. It was pretty cool.....you could tell everyone was jealous. ;)
When I'm half way across the country and I give a Buckeye an O-H! and they don't return the I-O! I don't get too upset, it's pretty easy to space out and be in your 'own world'.
"I'm One Bad Buckeye, and I approve this message."
STOP IT JERKS! It's not like we ever offer anyone when we sense there's blood in the water.
Something about a gentlemen's agreement...
EzE still has that he is a commit to OSU on his twitter pic but no longer has a pic of him in OSU gear for all those looking for something to go a little nuts over.
Yeah, like that!
Why would he change it? That would cause him way too much trouble.
"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.
If he was, in fact, looking to get away from the spotlight, he is certainly finding multiple ways to stay exactly in the middle of it.
Even tho Zeke isn't talking to the media and recruiting analysts, I'm sure he is still talking to coaches. If I was Urban, Drayton, or Herman and he wouldn't talk to me... I wouldn't be happy. I'm sure Zeke is answering the phone for coaches... Just not media.
Steve Whitfong at 247 said Zeke declined an interview tonight but will do one tomorrow. So at least we'll get to here from him.
At least he's going to say something... All the speculation is starting to get annoying. If he's going to flip, go ahead and do it now. Then Urban can call Wilson and tell him he can play RB. If not, confirm your committment to OSU.
@Saban and FSU

I can't embed the link but EZE just made a remark about all teh schools who are offering last minute. The first person to tweet back was graham rahal. He said stay with the Buckeyes. Thought that was funny with all the talk of adults tweeting HS kids.

That offer made no sense to me seeing that Bama told Vonn Bell they were going to make room for him.. Bama seems to be out of the race for Bell then. I think Ohio State is in good shape for Bell here. Just need to worry about Tennessee.
Read a tweet earlier that said Bama didn't think Bell wasn't big enough or physical enough to play safety in their system. They're recruiting him as a CB. They have to be out. It is down to UT and OSU.
Yeah I seen that too, I think Bama is moving on from Bell, and by offering EzE just further proofs that. Probably pissed at Urban or something, who knows. But it appears to be a battle between Urban and Butch now. He should decide on Saturday, but will keep it hush hush until NSD.
i think your right on with your assumption that sabans pissed
This is becoming a common theme... Ohio State trying to pry recruits away from their hometown team. Bell, Quick, Diggs, EzE.... so far we have't had the best luck. Hopefully that will change.
I think his home school is trying to pry EzE away. He's been a Buckeye commit for a long time. Diggs and Quick never were.

NSD week = The best soap opera ever!
not sure exactly how to paste, or if im allowed, but Steve Wiltfong from 247 said EzE's dad texted him that Alabama did not offer and confirmed that FSU did.
http://ohiostate.247sports.com/Board/120/Ezekiel-Elliott-update-16349995/2
Not worried about Bama or FSU. I believe the only team to worry about is Mizzou. If he has a hat selection on NSD when he never de-committed it will be a ridiculous situation.
Don't matter either way cuz EzE isn't going to Bama
Alabama's cornerbacks coach is finally trying to beat Kerry Coombs.
Coach Coombs is in Newark NJ right now, I imagine he will visit Jonathan Hilliman, Jabrill Peppers, Quenton Nelson, Garrett Dickerson, & Kiy Hester.
Braxton posted the same pic of him an Dontre on his Instagram page telling buckeye nation to go follow dontre take it fwiw
Hardly home but always reppin
When did he post it?
Bucknuts jost posted this new article, can anyone summarize main points?
http://ohiostate.247sports.com/Article/Bill-Kurelic-Makes-Sense-Of-Ohio-...
Main points:
-Corey Smith took Timmons spot. Doesn't think we take Timmons.
-Wlison and Elder are being recruited as slot backs while Elliott is the only pure running back.
-Finnin offer has nothing to do with possibly striking out with other recruits just with OSU wanting another OL
-Bucks will take Clark no matter who else they potentially get.
-Room for at least 2 more prospects maybe 3.
Awesome Hayze! Thanks!
Room for 2 or 3 more and will take Clark no matter what?
They want Wilson, Clark, and Bell for those spots and the only way they extend to 3 is if it's those 3 guys in my opinion. Hope we can get just 1 or 2 of them. All 3 would be awesome.
Champions Bleed Scarlet & Gray
That's a dream scenario. I say we get Clark, Wilson to ORegon and Bell picks Tenn (childhood fav). If we strike out on wilson and bell, i assume we take elder?
I'd be happy with just Clark and keeping Elliot.
Bell would be a great pickup but I'm not ready to concede to UT just yet. And Wilson, I agree, I think is going to stick with Oregon.
Champions Bleed Scarlet & Gray
I remember a few people saying in threads days ago that they didn't understand why people follow recruiting so closely: All of the stories going on mentioned in this thread, the mystery, the intrigue, the last minute offers, that IS WHY! This is like a soap opera for guys! So entertaining. Haha
About a half hour ago!

good stuff blaze.

We are going to finish with Clark and Bell. Great finish IMO.
U really think we get Bell? Why? Not trying to doubt you, just curious. I think Tenn. wins.
bell stated relationship with coaches is very important and he LOVES urban
wants to play early and would be a likely starter soph yr and see field as frosh
wants to coach after football and urban and tosu have a history of their players becoming quality coaches
mike farrel (#1recruiting guru) predicted bell to tosu
these are the main reasons i think bell to tosu but i know i am forgetting another reason, will edit later if i remember

ive been on the bell to tosu train all along and im feeling good about it right about now.
read that clarks parents were not on visit with him, does this lessen the bucks chances?
give me bell and wilson/clark/elder/whoever urb pulls out his hat, and i'll be elated with the close to this class, bell would give us a big bump in the rankings imo.
O'Deez330

Well - at this point, if the staff feels good about the recruits on board currently, that they'll actually sign on the line - then IHMO, I'd like to see them stop recruiting pretty much everyone but Bell & Clark. Don't think Wilson is coming, OLine will be fine....get Bell & Clark if possible & shut it down...But like I said - that's just my 2 cents.
The world is full of kings & queens who'll blind your eyes & steal your dreams - it's heaven & hell - Ronnie James Dio.
hope Zeke stays but if not it won't be too big of a deal IMO...it would hurt much more if a guy like Marshall or Bosa bailed...Zeke helps this class a lot and he is a integral element to it, but its still a hell of a class without him... more interested in seeing what Bell does and if Wilson/Clark join the party.
I disagree. Zeke is the type of back we need to compliment Dunn in this offense. Plus, I don't like the notion of him leaving at this late of a date.
Very very surprised to read that KC McDermott is now saying he has no interest in OSU and he said it directly in Urban's face. It wasn't very long ago where he was high on OSU because of Meyer. Don't understand it at all. I personally put him in the select few of OL that would be part of the 2014 class. Oh well, still plenty of solid OL out there.
Yeah,I was surprised by McDermott statements as well. Not all recruits are Buckeye fans.We have enough O-linemen to choose from for 2014,next guy up!!
