Ohio State recruiting: State Secrets, 1/18 - an offer for Devin Lauderdale (Land Grant holy Land)

National Signing Day is only a few weeks away for the class of 2013 and Ohio State has its eyes set on a couple of high profile names. That won't stop them from turning some of their attention to the class of 2014, however, as they proved by offering four more recruits.

The flood gates for Ohio State's class of 2014 are starting to break wide open. With two commitments in the class of 2014 already secured, the coaching staff is looking to make the '14 class one to remember. If you need any proof at all, just take a look at their recent activity in the recruiting battlegrounds. Offering a bevy of recruits that included '14 RB Parris Campbell Jr, '14 DE Soloman Thomas, '14 S Erick Smith, and '14 ATH Kiy Hester.

To expand a little bit, there's some confusion going on about Campbell and if he actually received a scholarship. At this point, I think it's safe to say that even if he doesn't have one at this time it will be happening soon. Smith is another prospect from the Cleveland-Glenville pipeline that continues to loom large for the Bucekyes in 2014. If you remember Christmas day, '14 offensive lineman Marcelys Jones, a Cleveland-Glenville product, became Urban Meyer's first 2014 commitment. His teammate, '14 cornerback/wide receiver Marshon Lattimore, also had previously been offered by the Buckeyes. Now safety Smith has confirmed that he received an offer from Ohio State. There's no doubt in my mind that all three have a very good chance to be Buckeyes by the time it's all said and done.

We've got highlights galore (thank *you*, Internet) for you to feast your eyes on of the aforementioned offered recruits:

There was also some big news in the class of 2013, with the Buckeyes pursuing yet another wide receiver from the current class in '13 WR/DB Devin Lauderdale. Lauderdale, a former Texas Tech commit, eliminated the Red Raiders after Tommy Tuberville and Neil Brown departed. The craziest thing about the Lauderdale offer is that the Houston, Texas area product will be in Columbus *this* weekend and taking an official visit from Sunday through Monday. That sure was fast.

There's also an update on '13 RB Dontre Wilson. Wilson's now officially-officially setting his visit to Ohio State:

We can't overstate how important it is for Coach Meyer and his staff to land visits from the recruits they covet. Official visits (which they can only take five of their senior years) are especially powerful as those can have that athlete looking at the world through scarlet and gray glasses in no time.

Finally, we can't forget about '13 ATH Cornelius Elder when it comes to figuring out who the Buckeyes are still keying in on. The 5'10", 165-pound speedster recently named Ohio State and UCLA as his top two finalists. After visiting the Buckeyes this past weekend, perhaps Elder is the answer to the staff's questions at receiver or just about any position that is in need of depth. If Elder were to join the Buckeyes, I would certainly put him in the receiver category. The two-sport star has said that basketball is his first love, and would listen hard to basketball coaches across the country. While Ohio State has only offered him for his talents on the gridiron, I have to wonder if Matta might try to help the Buckeyes out by offering Elder a scholarship as well. Though he could also be dropping hints that he's favoring UCLA for their storied hoops past. Stay tuned.

DeSoto RB Dontre Wilson to meet with Ohio State coaches, visit Columbus campus next week (Dallas News)

DeSoto running back Dontre Wilson will meet with Ohio State coaches at his home Thursday night, his father Don Wilson said.

He’s also planning to visit the Ohio State campus on Jan. 25.

Wilson has been committed to Oregon since May and said Thursday that he remains committed to the school. But the departure of head coach Chip Kelly to the NFL has caused Wilson to continue evaluating colleges.

“I’m still committed to Oregon,” Wilson said, “but I’m going to take some visits.”

In addition to Ohio State, Wilson said he might also visit Oklahoma State.

Asked how likely he is to stick with Oregon, Wilson was noncommittal.

“I can’t really say that right now until I take those visits,” he said.

Wilson was announced as SportsDay’s Offensive Player of the Year at the SportsDayHS Heroes Banquet on Thursday night. He rushed for 1,892 yards and 37 touchdowns to lead DeSoto to the 5A Division I state semifinals.

Ohio State Recruiting Board and Official Visit Update (The buckeye Battle Cry)

We’re back again with another 2013 recruiting board update thanks to Urban Meyer’s mile-a-minute recruiting style.

First things first, it seems like the staff is preparing for the worst; GA S Vonn Bell staying south.

It also seems like JUCO WR Corey Smith may not be as close to a sure thing as I assumed earlier in the week based on reports following his official visit.

That would open up two, or potentially even three spots in the class.

The third would be available if things fall through with an offensive lineman.

The offers to receivers are certainly going out right now like the staff is preparing to fill at least two additional spots in the class.

First priority for one of those spots is reserved for TX ATH Dontre Wilson.

Ohio State Football Recruiting: Vonn Bell Is Most Important Undecided Prospect (Bleacher Report)

Ohio State has already put together a great recruiting class for 2013, but it will be even better with the addition of Vonn Bell.

According to 247 Sports, the safety is a 4-star prospect and is the No. 3 safety in the nation. However, his impact would go beyond just that.

Bell is an incredible playmaker in the passing game. He has great closing speed that allows him to take risks and make up for it later. In addition, he can make a play on the ball when quarterbacks attempt to throw past him.

In addition, the young player already has very good hands for his position and has the ability to force a lot of interceptions at the next level.

Last season, Ohio State struggled at defending the pass. The defense ranked No. 76 in the nation in passing yards allowed per game, which was especially bad considering the lack of elite passers in the Big Ten.

While the team did force 14 interceptions, it could use even more if it wants to take a step toward being elite.

Yeah, I heard about this stadium a few months ago, I crapped myself when I heard $60 mil for a HS stadium. I'm guessing it's one of the best HS stadiums in the country. Massillon isn't half bad either.

He's the complete opposite and fast as hell.

Myles Autry ability to make a cut at top speed and not lose any of that speed is incredible. That tape reminds me of DAT alot hoping we blow his socks off on his visit hes perfect for this offense. Would venture to say hes 1a with Campbell being 1b.

The circle button is strong with this one.

It doesn't look like he has top end speed or power, but he makes everyone look silly with that change of direction and eluding tackles.  It's possible that his competition is just fast and could not tackle me, but wow!  WANT!

Do you make anything of Marcelys saying he is still open to other schools?

Class of 2008

lljjgg's picture
lljjgg on 18 Jan 2013 - 8:33pm #

I personally don't. From what I've heard in the past, he was a guy who wasn't that highly recruited until the last year or so, so I think despite committing he just wants to enjoy the recruiting process a bit. You never want to guess what someone else is thinking, but you have to imagine if anyone's heart is all Buckeye, it's him. As some of the biggest Buckeye homers ever, if we were offered by OSU and other schools (one can dream), I think we'd take a look at the other schools just to experience what's out there--but ultimately it'd always be about OSU in the end. I kind of get the same feeling with him.

Unky Buck's picture
Unky Buck on 18 Jan 2013 - 8:47pm #

It should be somewhat expected, but then again, why make a commitment if you're still going to openly look at other schools? I guess we'll wait and see how that plays out but in the long run, I think he stays a Buckeye.

lljjgg's picture
lljjgg on 18 Jan 2013 - 8:55pm #

I agree. That said, my thinking is if I commit (as a hypothetical big-name recruit) but am still "open" to other schools: 1) I've locked in my spot on a tremendous OSU team, but 2) also still get free vacations to Miami, LA, and Austin in the form of official visits down the line to schools like UMia, USC and UT. Maybe that makes me evil, but I'd milk the process for anything I could get if I were him (or any other recruit that has offers)! Could also be that my parents never took us on vacations growing up haha.

Unky Buck's picture
Unky Buck on 18 Jan 2013 - 9:03pm #

I could definitely see that side of it. When it comes down to it, these are 16, 17, 18 year old kids. If they have free 2-3 day vacations being thrown in their lap, why not take it. But to play devil's advocate, do you think it turns schools off when you commit? Obviously some will still recruit, but does that diminish the possibility of visiting other schools that you may want to go visit because they think you're just using them for a free trip? Personally, I doubt it. Like I said, I'm just throwing that out there. I think if he talks to a handful of coaches who are interested, they'll bring him in for a visit regardless.

USMC11917's picture
USMC11917 on 18 Jan 2013 - 9:30pm #

I wouldn't blame Urban if he took a commitment from a kid and the kid later said he was open to other schools, then a better talent came along, I'd toss the better talent the position and have the other guy go elsewhere. That would be something I let the recruit know before accepting his commitment too. I know I am likely to get multiple down votes for this but it seems fair to me. I want your commitment and stating you are committed to me is the beginning of that "all in" mentality.

UncleBuck's picture
UncleBuck on 18 Jan 2013 - 9:39pm #

I get what you're saying. It is a two way street, and if you are "committed" while it suits you then why can't the coaches be the same way.

Hurd said he grew up a Tenn fan, but didn't he recently said that OSU leads right now?

lljjgg's picture
lljjgg on 18 Jan 2013 - 8:39pm #

That's what I've heard, as well. It'll be interesting to see what Butch Jones does with TENN, and what kind of push they'll make on Hurd. One of the biggest oversights on Dooley's part, was that numerous sites said that as of the last year or so (when his demise seemed inevitable) he stopped recruiting the state of Tennessee very hard. That, along with the losses and eventual coaching change, made a huge impact (in a negative way) on players like Vonn Bell and Hurd. Tenn will always be in it, but Jones has a lot of work to do to change Tenn around and create a new relationship with those recruits. Vonn Bell may be too far gone, but he does have a while to work on Hurd.

He said his best relationship among coaches recruiting him is with Urban as of right now were the clubhouse leader.

Unky Buck's picture
Unky Buck on 18 Jan 2013 - 8:50pm #

Alright, so does the possibility of Kirby Smart leaving Bama and heading to Philly change anything in terms of how Vonn Bell feels about Bama or is this totally about Saban with him? Knowing how much he values relationships with the coaches, to have a new DC who may not have been involved in his recruitment at all affect his decision? I think we still need to wait on the official word, but as long as we have the speculation that he may leave, what happens here if he does?

SpoonerBuck33 on 18 Jan 2013 - 9:59pm #

Not much at all since Saban handles the DB's along with Pruitt.

lljjgg's picture

Pruitt left for FSU. I agree with you in the sense that it has no effect. Honestly, I feel losing Pruitt would logically be a bigger loss to him than losing Smart--and Pruitt already left, which Bell seemed not to be bothered by at all. IMO if he goes there it's for Saban and no one else.

I am not going to bash any single recruit and I know this is a huge decision on their parts and all that but I wish recruits in general would really focus on the meaning of commitment. That statement is true for those attending other colleges and Ohio State. I know things can happen at any given time, like coaches leaving or family affairs and in those cases I completely understand, but to say you are open to other colleges after committing to one irks me. In our case, we have stability and are in a good position with success and momentum moving forward. 2014 signing day is forever away. If your open to other colleges, why bother committing? I have read comments from folks with understanding on this subject and I get what you are saying but i think my views hold merit too.

Regardless of what exactly Marcelys Jones means by being open to other schools, it is disappointing talk from the fisrt commit of the class.  A person you expect to be a leader in the class can't fulfill that role while talking about being open to other schools.
