OOOO EEEE Whats Up With WR's

We can probably make a long list of WRs that have come and gone and came back around. Would be interesting to know how many WRs have received an offer. Good thing we got Marshall and Jacobs early on.

Just like the staff predicted defense was the priority. Now we are nearing the 11th hour. Do we take any WRs thats not an Oregon committ. Looks like Clark is going to Clemson. I think as some suggest the scholly gets banked.

I have absolutely no idea. But I subscribe to the theory that you'd rather bring another guy into this class, instead of banking.

Is this our last recruiting class with reductions? Or is there one more year of that?

Next years class will have limited schollies too. 2015 goes back to the normal amount.

With the way Urban operates in saying that he wants guys who can come in an contribute right away, hence why very few get redshirted, I think that he's not going to just throw out a scholarship just to bring another guy in to get a number. By banking the scholly for what should be a small class next year, you can actually give it to a deserving senior walk-on and a player who already knows the system and may contribute. I'd rather him hold onto it instead of giving it someone who may never see the field.

If the guy doesn't fit, doesn't exactly wish to be there, then bringing him on just to not bank seems like a relatively poor decision to me. I'd rather bank and save for next year when class is still light than to force a fit.

You sir, are evil. First you get us (ok, not all of us, but a bunch of us) sucked into rooting for Timmons, then you spring this on us (walks away irritated, singing oooh eeee under her breath...).

I find it odd that Coach Meyer has been unable to secure the verbal commitment of one top receiver. Marshall, who I believe will be a tremendous play maker, was a QB in HS and Jacobs, while speed kills, is not considered to be an elite prospect. I realize that many great college players were not highly thought of HS players, but losing out on Quick, Gibson, Treadwell, North (probably) et al is disappointing... especially when all of those players were Midwestern prospects (minus North); Gibson an Ohio kid. You would think that Meyer's offense would be one within which a top receiver would want to play. Quick going to Louisville, while it's his home town, when he had the opportunity to play here is a bit mystifying to me. Louisville does not compare to Ohio State in any way. Gibson to WVU is another tough pill to swallow (grades???). Treadwell going to an SEC school, Ole Miss to boot, is disconcerting. Now the very late pitches to Dontre Wilson and the twins from San Diego. What is the issue? Could it be that these kids have honestly and thoroughly evaluated the QB's in place at each school and come to the conclusion that Braxton Miller is simply not up to par as a passer? Great athlete? Absolutely. Great passer? Not even close. I'm going to say that was a factor in Quick's decision. Bridgewater is a better passer than Miller, and a great athlete himself. Gibson to WVU must be academics. I can't figure than one out. Treadwell never seemed to be truly interested, but I cannot imagine why. What are you getting at Mississippi that you arent getting at Ohio State? Is it Bo Wallace? He can throw it better than Miller. I think Braxton is outstanding as a play maker/runner/athlete... but I just didn't see much improvement from a passing standpoint between his freshman and sophomore years. IDK, just thinking out loud...

I agree that the Gibson scenario is very strange, but from what I can tell I don't think we missed out in the sense that he chose to go somewhere else.  It seems rather that he missed out on us.

I think all of the guys on the board are legitimate playmakers and if Urban has offered I believe he should take their commitment. Wilson, Clark, Elder, and the Robinson twins are all worthy of coming to OSU. I didn't mention Timmons because he doesn't have an offer, but I'd like to see him in scarlet and gray. I think the lack of WR's wanting to come to OSU has 2 reasons:

1) the 2013 class hasn't had enough time to develop relationships with the staff. The 2014 class will be loaded with WR's and Urban can pick the ones he wants.

2) Braxton hasn't proven himself as a passer and we didn't throw the ball that much last year. Coaches and parents are talking to these WR's about this stuff.

This isn't a popular opinion, but most elite WRs want to play with pass-first QBs and Braxton Miller is not one. Could he be eventually? Yes. Is he a top 5, Heisman candidate QB? Yes. If I had my choice, would I want anyone other than Braxton to be QB at tOSU next year? Absolutely not! But he's not a pass-first QB, and most WRs want to play with a pass-first QB to pad their numbers. Our top WR (Philly Brown) had 669 YDs receiving and 3 TDs. Louisville's top WR (Devante Parker) had 744 YDs receiving and 10 TDs. USCs 2nd best WR (Robert Woods) had 846 YDs receiving and 11 TDs--I'm not going to even mention Marqise Lee's numbers because they're ungodly. Whether we like it or not, top WR prospects aren't necessarily looking for championships, they're looking for numbers that will get them noticed and playing at the next level. The WR-diva "get me the damn ball!" mentality is pervasive these days.

I think Braxton could become a pass-first QB, and a good one at that, but the offense as it's currently run just isn't that attractive to WR prospects outside of your "Percy Harvin type." Braxton had 2000 passing yards, Manziel had 3700. Manziel had 2 WRs with over 70 receptions, 2 WRs with over 900 yds receiving. That is VERY attractive to top WRs like Ricky Seals-Jones.

That said, we DID get Jalin Marshall who is a top 5 WR by most standards. As an Ohioan he was a bit of an easier draw, though. Not getting James Quick was just bad luck. We barely missed on Stefon Diggs last year. But I DO think that if Brax has a great passing year next year, you'll start to see elite WRs' heads turning toward Columbus. Heck, we already have a shot at Drake Harris, possible the #1 WR in 2014.

I like the realistic rationale you stated there. If Braxton throws for 3000 this coming year more true WR's will start looking at OSU. Plus, JT Barrett is supposed to be a more polished passer than Braxton when he takes over.
