hands down....I never thought I'd love Kerry Coombs as much as I do, but he is DEFINITELY my favorite assistant coach and is turning into one of Urb's best hires!

Agree 100%

Every time I read what he is doing, or see EZE's video of him it just makes me want to freakin' play for him!        NOTE: At 42 I'm sure he would need to replace me on the field within, oh about......one play! But that one play I'm sure I could take some ones head off if he told me to!!

One of the Cass Tech coaches tweeted that 'the dean of students (of cass tech) coach coombs" would be in town today. Love it.

You have to wonder what the TSUN coaches are doing allowing Cass Tech to be taken over like this, you know if TSUN coaches were spending SO much time at Glenville that Urban, Vrabel, and Coach Coombs (and all the other assistants) would be there just as much or more to prove a point.

Who is he going to visit at CT?  Campbell and Weber, I presume?  As long as Hoke gets Malik McDowell and fights for Drake Harris out of the state of Michigan, I'm happy.  And with Damien Harris supposedly liking Michigan already, Weber might be OSU's for the taking.  Campbell is the truly interesting scenario.  It will be something to watch to see if Michigan goes hard after him.

There still is Webb. Just because he is committed doesn't mean you stop recruiting him.

It's M*ch*gan not Sparty. Gotta love the effort by the coaching staff trying to make inroads up there, but I doubt something as harmless as a coach visiting a player would send TSUN into meltdown. The same cannot be said in East Lansing...

I haven't seen much of Campbell, but wouldn't he flourish in an option spread?  I foresee Michigan going after more pro-style big arm guys (like Morris) so it'll be interesting to see if they go after him.

I think it says a lot about our coaches when we are a week away from NSD and yet we have coaches still out focuses on kids who are a year (maybe two years) away from signing on the dotted line. While we like to panic on every new story out there about a recruit the staff is focused and on a mission: Plant the flag.

I love watching the replay of the games in which we had interceptions or punt returns for touchdowns in which he is on the sideline jumping like 10 feet off the ground........dude brings the energy and was an excellent hire....now we gotta get back to the 97' style defense that had 2 anchor corners and linebackers flying all over the place and an attacking defense that dictated tempo to the other team

Coach Coombs has managed to do what very few if any Buckeye coaches have done and thats getting a foot in the door at Cass Tech. I still cannot believe this guy locked up Damon Webb for us such a huge committment its unbelievable. He is becoming a rock star in that area right before our eyes and maybe our top 1or 2 recruiter. Cant say it enough but this guy continues to impress me more and more would love to play for this man any day!

While watching Coombs speach I found a comment who I believe is his dad, "selmuhammad". Here is my best guess as to why Elliot will be playing for us next year. Albeit graphic, his dad is fervent on his committment. Go Bucks! Beat Blue.

Love Coombs! He seems to have gained rock-star status among the OSU fans, and clearly an outstanding recruiter.  Does anyone know how technically astute he is?  Is he a great coach?  What does Urban think of him?  Not to take anything away from him, but it seems like his career began to take off when he went to Cincy.

btalbert25 on 30 Jan 2013 - 7:53pm #

I can't speak for his coaching, but I think the job at UC was where he got his start in the college ranks. He had one of the better high school head coaching jobs out there at Colerain for 16 years.  So, yeah his career did take of at UC, because that's really the only time he coached outside of high school football.

Set your avi
northcampus on 30 Jan 2013 - 8:13pm #

As a coach, he's much more of a motivator than a tactician.  His Colerain teams, while basically never throwing the ball, absolutely destroyed opponents and he wasn't afraid to leave the foot on the gas pedal in the second half.  Once he moved to UC, the knock on him was that he didn't develop talent as much as he could/should have.  However, he recruited with the best of them.  HS coaches in Greater Cincinnati either love him or hate him (the disdain mostly due to being on the other end of one of the many Colerain blowouts).

His personality is extremely similar to Meyer in regard to him being a fierce competitor, an extremely diligent person, and a polarizing figure.  These two get along well, but if they disagree with each other, neither will hold back.  You're either a huge fan of these men or you cannot stand them.  Rival coaches will never outwork either of them and their players will always be in better shape than their opponents.  And nothing is sweeter to either than the taste of victory (both on the field and on the recruiting trail).

Colerain is a working to lower class area and his teams were absolutely blue collar units.  Their league (the GMC) was never a serious challenge to Colerain, so Colerain took on the big boys from the GCL (St. X, Moeller, Elder) and had some epic battles in the Division I playoffs.  I'm not surprised that Coombs is making waves with some of the inner city recruits.  He's much more comfortable with kids that haven't come from much and have a chip on their shoulders with something to prove than he is showing up at some affluent area/high school to try to build relationships with kids who may have had an easier path.

As long as he's at OSU with Meyer, he will excel as a recruiter and you'll never see him calm and collected on the sideline.  He will get after it and that is a promise.

osu07asu10's picture
osu07asu10 on 30 Jan 2013 - 11:45pm #

The knock on him once he got to UC was his inability to develop talent?

Geesh...apparently having 3 of your players drafted in a single year (08) doesn't qualify for developing talent, let alone doing it at a second tier program.

Harsh assessment if you ask me

Is Coombs a guy that would be looking to advance his career by taking on DC and then HC positions at smaller schools?  Obviously, Herman, Withers, Fickell are the one's mentioned when talking about getting promoted at other schools, but is Coombs a guy that is content sticking with OSU? I hope so.

Set your avi
northcampus on 30 Jan 2013 - 8:22pm #

If he's considering moving up in the coaching ranks, his window of opportunity is much smaller than the men you listed.  Coombs isn't a young man, so he got off to a very late start at the college level.  He's extremely loyal (many at Colerain thought he'd never leave and many at UC felt the same way).  I've heard through the grapevine that he's very, very content at OSU in terms of being part of a program that has a very real chance of being an annual BCS contender, so I'd be surprised if he left before Meyer retires.  Coombs isn't NFL material and he isn't going to be happy at some lower level college program or a D-I program such as MAC schools.  He needs and wants to be part of the big-time.  It doesn't get any bigger than Ohio State.

Set your avi
btalbert25 on 31 Jan 2013 - 1:22am #

I could actually see him thinking the job he has is his "Dream Job"  The isn't he like 57 years old?  I mean I suppose he could be looking to advance his career, but he's waited an awful long time to get ambition to do that.  He's at Ohio State doing what he loves, and he is doing it close to home.  What he's doing now could be what he retires doing.

We'll take him. And his energy. Love the level of it with Urbz here. I love Tress, but let's face it. We got complacent and Tress's shortcoming was his protection of underperforming assistants.
