Gibson talking Trash?

dubjayfootball90's picture
dubjayfootball90 on 23 Jan 2013 - 5:01pm #

well, I was pulling for him hardcore to come on board. Upset he committed to WVU, but oh well. No reason to digress, turn around and make a comment about a fanbase. Seems like a wide generalization based on a select few. Wish the kid success, but I don't really care for him anymore after that generalization. Just walking away, shaking my head

tennbuckeye19's picture
tennbuckeye19 on 23 Jan 2013 - 5:02pm #

Probably is true. Twitter allows fans free reign to spout off, and I'm sure Gibson received his share of criticism from OSU fans for his grades and then his decision to go to WV. It's sad, but my guess is that it's true.

bassplayer7770's picture
bassplayer7770 on 23 Jan 2013 - 5:07pm #

Crazy fans from every fanbase do that, but I do agree it's sad.  We need to leave these kids alone.  Once they become Buckeyes, I don't feel so bad about following them, but, even then, I almost never tweet directly at them.

BuckinBama's picture
BuckinBama on 23 Jan 2013 - 5:07pm #

He corrected himself, and said "some" fans. Which was good enough for me. Wish him nothing, but the best at WV. Hated an Ohio kid w/an offer, and interest in becoming a Buckeye wasn't able to. Just a hard lesson to learn, that school work, and grades still count no matter how good of a football player you are.

dubjayfootball90's picture
dubjayfootball90 on 23 Jan 2013 - 5:19pm #

ok, i did not know he corrected to 'some', so it takes away the entire fanbase generalization. Oh well. good luck. I'm over it. Grades are big and you dont realize that until sometimes too late. Hopefully he realized it alreayd, which I believe he has.

I honestly don't know exactly what he's saying there...something about fans talking trash to him - which btw, generally speaking, really sucks when people feel like they need to reach out to a recruit & say nasty things because they didn't get their way...People may not realize this, but perception of a fanbase probably does play a part in the decision of some of these kids. Not every kid, but some. No one wants to have people spitting venom at them over sports. Pretty sad...

I don't think Shelton sounds too smart right now...to me it sounds like a kid who is upset he didn't take care of business in the classroom/test room and is salty he can't play where he wants...once again I wouldn't be shocked if he ends up at Fork Union

Poison nuts's picture

Ok, out of curiosity, if he ends up at a prep school, he then could come back next year to the school of his choice, whatever that is, correct?

lljjgg's picture

I think the basis of his criticism is fair. I saw quite a posts on this forum and Bucknuts questioning his intelligence. Not ALL OSU fans (he was generalizing a bit there), but like any fanbase, there are the few who think it's appropriate to bash 17-18 year old kids.

That's part of the reason why I never contact recruits on twitter. Even if I have only good things to say, these are basically kids. People were messaging Robert Foster saying things like "you couldn't make it at OSU/UM/insert school because you're a dumb hoodlum." It's embarrassing the sort of bashing they have to hear from the select number of fans who think that's appropriate in any way. These people make the rest of us look bad. If they don't commit to OSU, I'm not sure why people can't just wish them the best (ideally without contacting them personally) and move on to following the next recruit. Instead they get bombarded with fanatics hurling insults at them because they didn't choose the school of the fan's choice. Just my 2 cents.

Squirrel Master's picture
Squirrel Master on 23 Jan 2013 - 5:25pm #

that can be said about any fanbase though. Without examples, I believe I would be accurate that WVU fans are just as bad as OSU fans if not worst. Idiots are idiots, despite what team they root for or what they do.

This kid is not dumb and if he lets those comments get to him, then what does he think will happen at the games? Comments are much worst at away games, just ask Sully.

Kid is not dumb, but his skin is pretty thin!

lljjgg's picture
lljjgg on 23 Jan 2013 - 5:31pm #

I DEFINITELY agree with you SM, it is an EVERY fanbase thing. There are people like this in every fanbase, I'm in no way claiming that this is exclusive to us Buckeye fans. Nor am I trying to sit on my high horse. Just makes me a bit sad that 17-18 year old kids are dealing with fans telling them that they're stupid, that they'll never make it. I even saw one fan tell Alex Anzalone when he decommitted from ND that he hopes he breaks both of his legs. Internet tough guys are the worst.

I don't personally think Gibson is talking trash, he's just basically saying (as far as I can tell from the quoted tweets) that he got messages from fans saying they thought he was dumb and wouldn't make it--which isn't good to be saying to a 17-18 year old kid. My nephew is 17 and I can only imagine how I'd feel if he had to deal with all of that BS. But it is what it is, I guess.

Squirrel Master's picture
Squirrel Master on 23 Jan 2013 - 5:42pm #

yeah the OP is misleading for sure. Gibson is speaking his mind about something that is bothering him. Nothing wrong with that except the thin skin part. Just gotta let it go and not feed into those A-holes that want you to acknowledge their idiocy.

Not to mention these are kids at 17-18 and really get a bunch of lofty expectations thrown at them when I bet a good portion of these kids just want to play football and not deal with the whole recruiting racket.

I have a 16 yr old nephew that is a soccer player. I am trying to prime him for dealing with this recruiting business because he is already getting some interest from schools. He talks about wanting to be a kicker for OSU but I told him A. he is a soccer player and doesn't practice fieldgoals or kickoffs enough to even consider it and B. don't want this type of nonsense. Luckily he isn't very interested in twitter and facebook. He really is not techie.

I agree, I hate seeing Ohio State fans bashing kids who aren't even out of high school. The Alex Anzalone kerfuffle comes to mind. I wish it didn't happen, but as some others have pointed out, any major program is going to have fans like that.

WVU isn't exactly known for its academics, but I despise when Michigan fans act as if Ohio State is a community college because of their higher academic ranking, so I say we leave it alone.

Ohio State's a very good school, but let's not get too carried away; the gap between OSU and Michigan is actually quite big.

OSU acceptance rate: 63%, Michigan: 41%

OSU middle 50% ACT composite: 26-30, Michigan: 29-33

OSU 4-year graduation rate: 51%, Michigan: 73%

McKinsey, Bain, BCG, and top investment banks recruit at Michigan but not OSU.

Michigan sends way more people to top law schools, too.

And their major grad schools are almost all ranked significantly higher than OSU's

Agree. I said it in a thread when someone mentioned about his interview when asked directly about his grades. I'm sure the kid is embarrassed and with it being the main topic of discussion about him for several months he is probably hurt.

These kids do read what is written, tweeted and blogged about them. They google their name to find stuff hoping it is flattering. Including this site. Of coarse they do they are KIDS.

You need to have a really thick skin when you're in the public eye. You learn that as you get older, but these kids have not had the time to learn it yet in some cases. Some are better at it than others but it becomes a very rude awakening for many.

I really wish him well and hope he finds his happiness.

Ahh Saturday on 23 Jan 2013 - 6:11pm #

If you look at things from Gibson's perspective it's easy to understand why he might be upset.  Either all the speculation about his academics is correct, in which case it's embarrassing and not really anybody's business, or the speculation is incorrect, in which case "f you" seems a fairly reasonable response.

I read these boards as much as anyone, but my interest in Ohio State football doesn't give me any right to know about a teenager's grades.  And the open discussion of what those grades might be goes beyond bad form and reaches very close to unethical behavior.  These are teenagers, they are not public figures, and we can't expect them to have a hide as thick as a seasoned politician.

He wouldn't be hurt if he had taken care of business in the classroom or testing room. If he's really upset about how everything has gone down with OSU, he can go to a prep school or JuCo for a year and give it another shot. I'm not defending the morons who called him stupid/dumb, just pointing out that he wouldn't be in this situation if he'd done what he should have academically.

I have neither a Twitter nor a Facebook account, but acknowledge that as the level of candor has risen in these social media exchanges, the level of tact has fallen. In Gibson's case, though, I have to wonder if the open (for the whole wide world to see) discussion of his academic struggles had him feeling like everyone thinks he's "dumb" when, in fact, the conversations very well might have been of the "not worth the risk" and "he has to take care of his business" variety, which are pretty fair game, IMO. As a teacher, I can certainly emphahize with a kid who struggles with grades; it can be a source of intense secrecy and embarrassment, especially if they've worked hard to improve. You can't have it both ways, though; if you're going to use these social medias to draw attention to yourself and your accomplishments, you'd better expect that your audience will be paying attention to your failures as well.
