gibson clears the air for scout.com

http://recruiting.scout.com/2/1260575.html

Interesting article coming from Gibson. I didn't bother to look at the Twitter war he had with fans, as it's mostly the same recycled garbage over and over. Not sure what is true and what isn't when it came to his recruitment, but what I do know is that people who attack 18 year old kids on Twitter because they went to a different school have far worse problems than the talent on their favorite team.

I don't have a twitter account and have not followed the alleged twitter war, but the olive branch he extends at the end of the story seems genuine and classy enough.  I wish him luck at WV.

That's what i came away with, too. He had no reason to circle back and say that, and it showed a lot of character given what he went through with all the fans attacking him. I'm sure he will do great there, and I hope to see him on Sundays.

I think those are big things too, but his words here:

"I have switched schools a few times, but I am on target to qualify, and right now I am qualified through the NCAA sliding scale. I've been working very hard to get to this point, so it hurts to have people question my intelligence. When I first started getting offers, every school checked out my transcript and everything has always been fine."

"Again, I need to say I am above the requirements needed by the NCAA sliding scale, but if I mess up the next two grading periods I could fall below. I do not plan on letting that happen, and if it does happen then it's on me.

OSU's are likely different, which is why West Virginia accepted the commitment. If he falls below the sliding scale, JUCO it is. This pretty much confirms (albeit in a roundabout way) the rumors that his grades may not have been up to par.

Scarlet_Buckeye's picture
Scarlet_Buckeye on 24 Jan 2013 - 4:36pm #

This.  Gibson never " lied " in the article, but he certainly curbed the truth.  He mentioned he's "on target" to clear the NCAA sliding scale.  "On target" means, he hasn't cleared it yet.  It also suggests he's close to NOT clearing it.  Moreover, "clearing the NCAA sliding scale" is NOT "clearing OSU's academic admission standards."  They're different.  And everyone knows WVU's are lower than OSU's.

So while Gibson didn't "lie" or "miss state facts" (per se), he did curb the truth.

It's a twist of the truth without admitting that grades were the reason. At least that's how I read it.

Good luck to the kid, hope it works out for him.  Just wish we (those of us who follow recruiting) didn't have to hear soooo much about twitter, I miss the days when you actually had to call someone to say something to them.

I wish Gibson well at WV and appreciate his words.

Now, if we could only get fans to stop tweeting recruits.

Agreed. It is something I don't understand and probably never will. I love Ohio State just as much as the next guy (and as much as fans from other schools love their schools - this obviously isn't just an OSU issue) but I have absolutely no desire to locate any recruit on Twitter and follow/tweet/DM as some do. I know some want to get to know these kids but I would think, as adults, that we would have better things to do than communicate with high school kids. I say let our gurus do what they do and go from there. They never steer us wrong here at 11W.

It's crazy how many people contact players and such. it's borderline stalking if you ask me. it kinda makes you wonder how they live their lives if they spend a lot of time tweeting players. I just hope it never gets to the point when they start showing up at their home.

I agree as well. I follow recruits, but only after they have given at least their verbal comittment to tOSU and if I ever tweet at them it is in an exclusively positive way, never a reply to one of their tweets. Always felt like those were good guidelines to follow if there was to be any interaction at all

Kudo's to Shelton. It is just insane that people have to go on the attack, and they should be held accountable.  It is his decision, and his life. If he feels that he needs to go elsewhere then so be it. I have a feeling that if tOSU really wanted him he would be coming here. that's just my opinion though.

I agree with this completely but my question is (i do not have a twitter account), do you have to accept someone in order to tweet at them? Or can anyone just use their profile name and send a tweet that they will see?

If it is the former then these kids should not be accepting people they do not know.  It makes no sense.  People you do not know do not deserve/should not be able to talk to you unless you are doing it in person.  I guess the more followers you have the more popular you feel.  Silly.

If it is the latter there is something inherently wrong with twitter and people shouldnt be using it because there is no way to control who can speak to another person.

Set your avi
UrbzRenewal on 24 Jan 2013 - 5:56pm #

You can send a tweet to anyone that they will see with the @ sign, unless you have a protected account, which most people do not. That's the point is that anyone can talk to anyone, it isn't a flaw, it's the way Twitter is designed. If you don't like what someone is saying, you can block them.

I agree with everything said by everyone here...but....I think his comments about always being a Buckeye and rooting for OSU are really not a good way to go about showing support for your new school.

As Ohio State fans it makes us feel good, but if I were a WVU fan I guess I wouldn't really like the fact it sounds like a business decision and less of a truly want to be there decision.....maybe they won't care and maybe he will grow into loving WVU...time will tell..good luck sir.

Talking smack to a high school kid for making the best decision for himself is just pathetic. Especially considering the one talking smack is just upset that he's not going to play on your football team. Get a life. This is his decision and likely the most important decision of his life to this point. It's his decision to make for what's best for him.

Why do these idiots fans tweet these under aged kids....despite twitter being open for everyone.  They're freaking 16, 17 or 18 year old kids....just ridiculous.  I understand the coaches doing it....that or texting.  But us...as fans....just stop it already.  IDC if you think it's cool or whatever....STOP IT!

My guess it is mostly high school and college kids tweeting. Maybe I am wrong though because Im sitting here texting more than I ever thought I would   Im pretty darn sure I will not take a step into tweeting. It makes no sense to me. Id have to learn a new language and I struggle with Eng and Sp. as it is.

One thought about fans tweeting hs recruits is that they can.  Unlike even 10 years ago, there is so much more open access, and with DM people can say anything without having to 'own' their hurtful and immature words.  And once some people have this power, like an addict they may not be able to stop.

I am Ohio State alum, and while I'll probably take a beating for posting this I have to say that I find it somewhat bothersome that a school known for being an elite research university with fine graduate programs, but certainly not a university known for providing an outstanding undergraduate experience, would turn an Ohio kid away because of borderline qualifying scores. This is a public, state land-grant university. Ohio State, as much as Gordon Gee might want it to be, is not Stanford, Notre Dame, NYU, or an Ivy League school from an academic undergraduate point of view. I sat in classes in massive halls my freshman and sophomore years with 400 other kids struggling to hear and/or understand the TA lecturing us. I didn't even see a professor (outside of his office hours) until my junior year. Again, this is my school and I'm a proud Buckeye. I had a tremendous "college experience" at OSU... but I have family who attended Notre Dame and Northwestern. The differences in the undergraduate experience at those academic bastions vs. Ohio State are dramatic from what I've been told. To me, Ohio State has significantly increased its tuition and its admissions requirements, but the quality of its undergraduate offering remains the same. There absolutely should be minimum standards, but lets not pretend that we're Stanford with ELITE academic offerings and that we need to turn away Ohio kids with borderline admissions scores whose families have paid state taxes and supported this university for decades so as not to sully our "Yale-like" standards...

Wait a minute...people from Notre Dame or Northwestern speaking condescendingly about the superiority of their institutions?!?!?!? Stop the presses!!!!!

When told OSU set school record for 50+ games this year, UFM said "That's good. We're gonna break that next year."

Let's set the twitter stuff aside for a moment. Ohio State and other schools have an interest in him because he's a gifted athlete. He's not being recruited because he has the potential to be a Rhodes Scholar. If he didn't have the talent on the turf, and was seeking traditional enrollment like thousands of other high school students, he most certainly wouldn't be attending tOSU... or WVU for that matter! And let's face it, we all know that the academic requirements aren't that challenging for a football scholly in the first place. The standard is low enough; he didn't meet ours... let's move on.

As for the twitter stuff... it's just a bad thing. I'd like to believe that adults, not just OSU fans, are above the harassment and stupidity. If you choose to share your life via twitter you're exposing yourself to more stupidity on a grander scale. I realize these are 17 & 18 year olds, but if you put yourself out there you're gonna see the ugly too. It's not right, but it is what it is.... life.

That being said, I'm disappointed SG won't be wearing scarlet & gray. I wish the circumstances were different and wish the kid luck at WVU. I hope he has success on the field and in the classroom. I'm always rooting for Ohio kids, unless they're playing against our buckeyes... or choose to play for Michigan.

Just for everyone's information Ohio State actually does not have any stricter academics. The Ohio State University has no GPA minimum as well as no SAT and ACT minimum. Therefore academics has nothing to do with the situation.

Ah, but the football team has certain academic requirements that athletes must meet in addition to the NCAA sliding scale (not publicly available of course, just like any other school the football team has certain requirements). So that would be incorrect; the school does not have "set" limits but the football team certainly does.

There's a reason why athletes potentially lower GPAs get in, but higher academic performing students get denied. Revenue sports athletes have different requirements to meet. The team's requirements and the universities' requirements are different: https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/college-university-search/ohio-state-university-columbus-campus?q=Ohio%2BState%2BUniversity%3A%2BColumbus%2BCampus&tp=bf&searchType=site_qfs&bf_cat=college

You can click the "How do I stack up?" button to view pretty much what OSU's looking for. Sorry, but your information "for everyone" is a bit incorrect. Academics has EVERYTHING to do with this situation.

TL;DR: the school doesn't have "set" requirements, but the football team has separate requirements in addition to the NCAA Clearinghouse/sliding scale. Yes, it's this whole situation.

Your brother didn't get in with a 28 ACT and a 3.6 GPA? Man how things have changed. I got accepted in 2000 with a 29 ACT and a 3.25 GPA. Granted, I also took a lot of advanced classes, most notably AP Calculus, and I think admission standards were a little different then too but that's rather drastic to not accept a kid with a 3.6 and 28 ACT...those are some nice numbers.

If only the fringe lunatics of Ohio State fans had even half the class of Gibson. Someone said he did a good job of extending the olive branch. What? He didn't start anything with Ohio State, so he didn't need to extend an olive branch. Leave the young man alone. He's working hard to achieve his dreams and some people are just a bunch of fanboys who want what they want when they want it. Like children.

JLBNYC's picture
JLBNYC on 24 Jan 2013 - 11:27pm #

Agreed. Alll schools have them (lunatic fringe); since we have so many alumni, we certainly have our share. But even if it is a fringe element, it makes me ashamed to be an OSU grad/fan to hear that people were telling Gibson he was too dumb to go to college.  I just dont get all of the venom spewed at high school kids by so-called fans becuase a 17-year old kid is having trouble making a decision or decides he only likes your school second best.

If we lose out to another school, I dont start badmouthing the kid or say we didnt want him anyway.  I wish Gibson and Quick nothing but the best (other than success against Ohio State, if that situation ever arises). And if Munger or Zeke decide to decomit, I will be dissapointed, but I would wish them luck as well.
