Al Borges's Recruiting Record

I found this posted in a UM forum at 247sports, and thought it was interesting. Al Borges, UM's OC, is touted by many fans for scouting and developing QBs. This post shows that he's not actually all that great, especially with recruiting. Check out this track record, thought people might find any tidbits on enemy recruiting to be interesting:

"Here are the qb's Borges has offered while he was the OC at these schools...

*UCLA*
Scott McEwan = bench warmer
Cory Paus = medicore starter
Ryan McCann = bench warmer
JP Losman = Transfered to Tulane, NFL Draft pick
John Sciarra = scrub, Transfered to a Div 1-AA school

So at UCLA he was 1/5 (20%) on his qb evaluations.

*CAL*
Steve Levy = bench warmer

At Cal he was 0/1 (0%) on his qb evaluations.

*Indiana*
Graeme McFarland = bench warmer
Allen Webb = transfered
Blake Powers = medicore 1 year starter
Mike Vlahogeorge = transfered
Grant Gregory = transfered

At Indiana he was 0/5 (0%) on his qb evaluations.

*Auburn*
Neil Caudle = bench warmer
Steven Ensminger = transfered
Kodi Burns = stunk, converted to WR
Barrett Trotter = medicore 1 year starter

At Auburn he was 0/4 (0%) on his qb evaluations.

*San Diego State*
Jake Bernards = bench warmer
Adam Dingwell = got beat out for the starting job this year by an Oregon State transfer.

At San Diego State he was 0/2 (0%) on his qb evaluations.

Almost everywhere Borges has gone he's *inherited* good qb's (Cade McNown, Jason Campbell, Ryan Lindley), but if you look at the guys he's actually recruited & signed...well, i think 1out of 17 speaks for itself. He just can't evaluate High School qb's."

Good find, hope Shane keeps up Borges' QB tradition of mediocrity, at least when he plays against us

Urban's defense is going to make Morris mediocre...  We are looking at speed from all positions on the defense over the next 4-5 years.  Morris will look like a statue back there.  I just hope Auburn or Tennessee steals Green away.  I think we will be able to stop him with the defense we are building, but he would be a good back for them.

Looks extremely promising.

One interesting thing to compare would be the star ratings of the QB's he's had versus their performance. Even without knowing the star ratings, 4 & 5 star QB's aren't indicators of talent and if this is the best he can do its kinda sad. Michigan got lucky to get Shane Morris since he was a Michigan kid but even with that he doesn't look impressive at all based on the UA game.

Given his success in the last 2 years at Michigan, he's extended his time there but I believe that if their offense takes a step back with this kid behind the line, Borges will be fired in no more than 3-4 years. I'm all for Michigan mediocrity if it means victories for us.

No one needs a girlfriend

That's what we all think when we have one. Once you've been single about a year that train of thought changes.

Nah man, that's just a personal problem. I broke up with my girlfriend of two years last year because I didn't have time for it. I've been single for a year and a half, and I've never been more aware of the fact that no one truly needs a girlfriend.

When you do have time for it, that will change. I have spoken!

Good find. O-fers are valid, but where he found a good one, the bench warmers during the good one's eligibility should not be counted as a failure (i.e., Cassell on the bench is not a failure if he sat behind Palmer and Leinart)

buck-I.8's picture
buck-I.8 on 22 Jan 2013 - 5:11pm #

Except the one good one he had transferred, and none of his backups made a difference. And honestly, if the crown jewel of your career is JP Losman, that's not really saying a ton. Not to mention, it's a red flag when I guy has the same job at that many schools over a long period of time and never gets considered for a better position. Shades of Jim Bollman, actually. People criticized Tressel because they felt that he only kept Bollman and a few others on staff because they were his friends. Borges likely only has that job at UM because Hoke brought him from SDSU, where neither of them lit the world on fire.

The OP seems disingenuous here.  Of the 17 recruits listed, 10 of them either were not even coached by Borges, or spent one year with him.

You can't penalize Borges for players he never coached, and refuse to reward him for players that he developed from medicore to very good even if he didn't recruit them.  The equivalent would be to punish Meyer for Brantley and Driskel while giving him no credit for Miller.

buck-I.8's picture
buck-I.8 on 22 Jan 2013 - 6:11pm #

If you're referring to me, The "OP", as it were, didn't come up with this data. The whole point of the correlations is that he doesn't have a good track record with recruiting top talent. Feel free to go further and look at whom he actually coached during his career, but the data here is more of an exploratory baseline.

Ispeakthetruth on 22 Jan 2013 - 6:15pm #

But how can you conclude that he didn't recruit top talent when he didn't even have the opportunity to properly develop that talent?  It just doesn't make sense.

buck-I.8's picture
buck-I.8 on 22 Jan 2013 - 6:32pm #

You're not following me. I'm not concluding anything. I found some data, found it interesting, and dropped it here. It's a jumping off point for discussion about something different than the same 3 recruits, so obviously you're more than entitled to your opinion.

I found it interesting. I personally don't even care about the past. What is now is what I am concerned with. Robinson was grossly over rated. I don't think Gardner is all that much more of a threat. I'm more curious as to what comes from Shane Morris. His stock has dropped, he struggled at UA(which apparently a lot of QBs in east did from what I recall on twitter feed), but he is also recovering from mono. That can take time to get back to where you are supposed to be/expect yourself to be... ANd when you're not there it adds a lot of frustration to your life. Overall I want scum to be good, I just want to be better. TTUN being bad not only hurts us, but our conference, image, and voting/support. So I want our teams to be good, so we are better and look better... But once it comes to bowl season I love seeing things like Clowney blowing the helmet off a dude, putting his hand out and casually one hand grabbing a fumble to get up and run. In a sense, I need scum to not suck, even if kicking their asses is fun, I'd rather kick their ass when there is more on the line. That #1/#2 game was an incredible victory I'll never forget, relevance plays a big key to that memory.

I hope that they find a QB that is good cause we need them to be relavent. Just don't want it to be Shane cause let's face it he seems like a huge douche.

Just gonna toss this part in for shits and gigs...
