Reconciling the Participation Trophy?

The idea of the participation trophy has been talked about quite a bit on here and the general consensus is that they are dumb. They reward a player for nothing more than participating in an event and nothing more.

The question I raise to all of you is, if you have such strong feelings against it, how do you reconcile the participation award with the post-loss speech? Is the participation award not just an extension of the post-game, you fought tough, you gave it your all speech? Or is it inherently different because you are rewarding someone for not winning as opposed to consoling someone after losing? Or are you of the opinion that both are wrong?

I don't really have an opinion one way or another. I'm not anti(or pro)-participation award, but just interested to see what the commentariat thinks is right about one and wrong about the other.
