Some slick concepts from an Ohio artist:

+3 HS
Scarlet_Lutefisk's picture

Why the goofy pseudo-cutlasses? Cavaliers were English royalists, they weren't pirates.

Bolt's picture

The Cleveland Cavaliers (and Virginia Cavaliers) have always associated swords into their logos/mascots/etc. Cavaliers were indeed Royalists, but they are historically associated with the English civil war as well...maybe that has something to do with it? Some of the more prominent Cavaliers during the time were cavalry men in support of the king.

Scarlet_Lutefisk's picture

Cavaliers were indeed Royalists, but they are historically associated with the English civil war as well...

As well? The moniker is almost solely associated with the Royalists during the English Civil War. Similarly with Roundhead being associated with the Parliamentarians.

I think my point was missed. The cutlass is primarily a naval weapon. The sidearms carried by the supporters of King Charles I & II (and Cromwell for that matter) would have mostly been straight bladed....backsword, side sword, rapier & tuck/estoc. The 'signature' blade for the conflict would arguably be a mortuary hilted broadsword.

Discounting it's understandably stylized nature, the sword on the official Cavs logo does stay pretty close to that idea.
Coming back from the realm of the pedantic...the real point was that IMO the illustrator was leaning a little too heavily on Tampa Bay Buc & similar motifs that have nothing to do with Cavaliers.
+2 HS
Bolt's picture

My apologies with the "as well"...I wasn't trying to insult your intelligence, but you indicated simply that they're royalists which could be referring to a person at any point in time...I was merely shrugging my shoulders and suggesting that since Cavaliers are specific to a certain period in history being the English civil war, maybe that's why they were associated with a blade. lol, the point was indeed missed on my part then. I'll be comfortable in knowing that I have a contact to reach out to in the event of a discrepancy over centuries old blades. And while we're on the subject of missed points...how do you like the uniform designs/color schemes ;-)?

Bolt's picture

Also, sorry for being a dumb/smartass, just joking around. I did give you the upvote for teaching me something new. I never would've noticed it otherwise.

On the bright side, it was a pretty big deal the raptors retained Lowry.

+1 HS
Squirrel Master's picture

Hell yeah. My Raps are young, deep and solid across the board. We might not have any superstars but we have no holes now. Lowry was a huge get, and I said about a week ago that I was glad my Raps were out of the FA world. Now that Lebron has signed, many teams will be spending all kinds of wasted money on retreads. It will ruin many teams cap space, and my Raps have a bunch of reasonable contracts.

I see my team as a playoff contender, maybe even a top 5 in the east. I have no delusions of contending for the east or winning a championship but at least they won't suck like before. Cleveland is going to be tough to get past for the next 4-5 years.

I saw a UFO once.......it told me to have a goodyear!

+1 HS
ToetotheFace's picture

If Cleveland plays this right and LeBron stays true to his commitment to "finish his career in Cleveland", then the Cavs are looking at possibly being one of the most successful teams in the league for the next 10 years. In 4-5 years LeBron will be starting to slow down most likely(in comparison to previous dominance), but the Cavs are such a young team their development could make up for it.

Raptors with their young, deep team will be solid in the east. Should be at least in the playoffs in the recent future, and with the imbalance of power(West vs. East), they could always sneak in to a deeper advancement than they did last season, although it is true that I don't expect them to ever get through the conference finals. Combination of Cleveland, Bulls, and Indiana are just too much for that, as well as the many promising teams that could jump to elite status eventually.

Cleveland has been trying to rebuild its image and become a world class city again. LeBron, a talented local kid leaving, is precisely the problem the area had. In recent years, that trend has been reversing. But being spurned in such a public way cut deep to the area's insecurities. So many positive things have been happening in Cleveland lately. This feels like the moment when the hard work pays off. We can feel the momentum, the energy, the buzz. Cleveland still has its problems but, it has a charm and a cool that will take you in. Its full of surprises and possibility. Today, for us, was about all of that.

This could be key to not having to trade Wiggins in a deal for Love.  That pick could will be gold if when Bosh leaves Miami too and the Heat absolutely fall apart this year.

Fixed that for you-with the Parsons deal that the Mavs have agreed to, no way will the Rockets match that.  Bosh would be an idiot to turn the Houston deal down-he's no way near a max contract player, and I can't imagine any other team offering him that kind of money.  Wade is done-I'd be surprised if he didn't return home to and end up in Chicago.  That Miami pick will be a lottery pick without a doubt.

Edit-shows how much I know, Heat have offered Bosh a 5yr max deal.  How is this possible?  He was barely a third wheel to Wade and Lebron.

+1 HS
Fear The Elf's picture

Even better: Mike Miller was amnestied by the Heat. One of the things that ticked LeBron off. Had they not amnestied him, Miller would still be under contract with Miami. They still have to pay him his guaranteed 6mil. Because he is getting paid, the Cavs might be able to sign him for cheap.

THEOSUfan's picture

Before last year's Wisconsin game my son and I took in the Skull Session.  I remember 2 things: it was hotter than hell in SJA and LeBron spoke.  I was wondering what kind of reaction he would get.  I'd say 40% of the crowd applauded him, 40% sat on their hands, and a very vocal 20% booed all the way through his little talk.

My son said afterward, "That will either make him want to stay away from Cleveland, or make him want to fix those hard feelings."  Looks like it was the latter.

One thing The Decision didn't change was his support for The Ohio State University.  I expect we will see him around even more now.

LeBron James’ deal with the cavs is reportedly for two years at $42.1M.

It keeps him in control.  If things go wildly awry, he at least has the ability to jump ship.  He's not leaving though.  The King has come home and the King plans on delivering.  Gilbert would have to go completely off the reservation (again) for that to happen.
