Draft Day

How much of the draft do you guys plan on watching tonight? I only plan on watching the Browns piss of the loyal fan base with their first pick and that's about it. Of course I'll check throughout the night to see where the Buckeye players get drafted. Also what are the chances the Raiders reach and take Dri Archer at #5? We all know speed kills baby! RIP Al.

So you are saying you want Manziel in Cleveland? You mean the Browns haven't been enough of a clown show for you to this point, and you want them to make things worse?

+3 HS
AJBor41's picture

What kind of clown show would you predict? For a college kid, his actions were questionable. By NFL standards, not as much. The kid can play football and could end up being a decent QB.

+1 HS
SavannahBuck's picture

What has he shown that makes people think he will be even a good NFL QB? He runs around alot, which will get him killed in the NFL. He has to throw it as hard as he can to get it 40 yards down the field. He is really accurate, as long as the wide receivers are 6'6" with great hands. He beat Alabama once, and pretty much lost all the other big games he played in. I for one don't want a "decent" QB. I want a 10-15 year starter who appreciates where is he, and appreciates a fan base that appreciates him. Manziel, if he does turn out to be "decent", will bolt Cleveland for any number of teams in bigger markets, because at the end of the day, in his mind, it's all about him.

+1 HS
ohst8buxCP's picture

You mean besides the Heisman Trophy, great tangible and intangible skillset and the fact that the kid can f****** play? I don't know where you got the idea that he has to throw it as hard as he can to get it 40 yards downfield but you couldn't be more wrong. The kid has a cannon and i've seen multiple "experts" say he has the strongest arm in the draft. The kid rolled into Bryant Denny Stadium in front of 100,000 people and lit up Saban's almost NFL caliber defense like they were a damn high school team. He may have lost some games (i have no idea why you think he lost almost all of them....i'm assuming you just don't watch A&M) but almost none were his fault. He usually lit the other team up and then his defense gave up 60+ points. What 10-15 year starter would appreciate being in Cleveland? I want a kid to come in with the mindset of "f*** it, i'm gonna win this city a championship if it's the last thing i do" which exactly what JFF will have. Sure he might not be a sure thing but what QB other than Luck has been the last decade? Just imagine the excitement it would bring if Goddell walked to the stage and said Manziel's name to the Browns. Some would love it and some would hate it but it would bring this team something it hasn't had in decades.

+4 HS
SavannahBuck's picture

And how many Heisman Trophy winning quarterbacks have amounted to anything in the NFL? Cam's pretty damn good. RGIII is a wait and see at this point. Who else in the last 20 years has done anything in the NFL? The talking heads on the networks like talking about Manziel because people listen, ratings go up. All I'm saying is he WILL NOT be a good NFL Quarterback. If I'm wrong, I'll gladly admit it.

Colerain 2004 G.O.A.T.'s picture

Didn't read the rest of your post but Manziel has no where near the strongest arm in the draft. It is above average but anyone saying that is a media clown that hasn't seen these kids in person. Hopefully the Browns can get Johnny at 26 because there are like 5 elite prospects and JF isn't one of them. Watkins or the LT from Auburn would be the best bet.

I speak the truth but I guess that's a foreign language to yall.~~Lil Wayne

SavannahBuck's picture

I've said before, if the Browns draft him at 26, then I'm fine. I still think it would be a wasted pick, but at least its not a top 5 wasted pick. And as for the aforementioned big games, he went 2 - 6 in 2012 and 2013 against teams that one could argue had a chance to win a national championship: Florida and LSU in 2012 were losses, Alabama and Oklahoma were wins(Oklahoma is being generous though). Alabama, Auburn, LSU, and Missouri were losses in 2013. No good wins last year except Duke, and lets be honest, nobody's going crazy because they beat Duke. The guy put up great stats, but he doesn't win big games against great teams. I could care less what his numbers are. And in NO WAY shape for form does he have a cannon for an arm. Brett Favre had a cannon. Cam Newton has a cannon. Manziel has an average arm at best.

+1 HS

Curious to get your take now, knowing what went into the picks and the trades that were made.

Also, by your logic, is Andrew Luck not a great pick because he didn't win huge games against great teams?

+2 HS
Bolt's picture

Someone that's going to get moved to guard for the foreseeable future at 4? If there's one growing trend I've seen recently, there's more than reliable o-lineman at the top of the draft every year now. We can get another tackle when we truly need one in the future (then again, maybe I'm just taking having a rock like Joe Thomas for granted). I'm not saying I don't like it, he's a fantastic player...but it's certainly not what I'm hoping for. It's more of a "luxury pick" to draft Joe Thomas's successor (potentially) 4-5-6-7 years before Joe's even done playing. Dude could be done with his rookie contract and getting impatient with being shuffled around the line while he waits for Joe to retire and sign elsewhere before Joe's even done. I'd rather see us take someone like Mewhort (not necessarily Jack, but someone like him) later on that is proven can play multiple positions and provide depth and versatility across the line.

+3 HS
d5k's picture

Yep, and if there's a trade market you could trade back to the 10-15 range in round 1 and take Zack Martin who is like a rich man's Jack Mewhort and can supposedly play all 5 OL positions at a pro bowl potential level.

Bolt's picture

Exactly what I was going to say as well. Zack Martin would be perfect for us. It appears there is a market to trade down.

nrbuckguy's picture

They tried that when they drafted Mitchell Schwartz in the second round. He hasn't exactly been rock solid so far. I say draft Robinson and move Schwartz to guard. Take a CB at 26 and the best available WR in the second round (c'mon Kelvin Benjamin!). Give Hoyer a shot and take a QB to develop in the middle rounds.

In Urban We Trust

Bolt's picture

I don't think Schwartz was particularly bad at RT but again we're talking about moving a natural T to G one way or another if we draft another T this year. Our real problem was at guard and with injuries...especially the at times shockingly bad play of Oneil Cousins at RG last year. I watched that dude get manhandled play after play after play in certain games.

+1 HS
nrbuckguy's picture

I see your point and Mitchell was actually rated the 11th best RT last year, but most of his struggles were with speedy edge rushers.  I feel like he could be even more effective inside at guard and Robinson would be solid at RT until Thomas retires.

In Urban We Trust

OSUpawn's picture

My thinking is this.  Of all of our early first round picks (and we have had a bunch) when did we get a player that is one, still on the team two, has helped build the team?  Only one that comes to mind is Joe.  If there isn't a Andrew Luck then you have to build a Line on both sides of the ball.  Our D-line isn't that bad.  That is why I want Robinson.  You will pay guarantee money to a player that will produce year after year.

You don't have to be the best QB to make plays when you have time to throw.

I believe the SEC players put their pants on one leg at a time like we do.

Unky Buck's picture

I'll watch through the Bills pick and attempt to get to the Browns second pick but I'm having a minor procedure tomorrow morning and need to be at the surgical center by 7:30 so staying up until midnight isn't really in the cards...but we'll see I guess.

As for picks, I want Watkins at #4, but if he's not there, Robinson (although unlikely) or Matthews would be the pick. For the Bills, I want either Ebron (really need help at TE) or Gilbert or Dennard (really have issues in the secondary and Dennard is definitely my preferred pick). They also need an OT and many have them taking Lewan in mocks, but I hate that pick (obviously) and would prefer they hold off on that until the 2nd round. At #26 for the Browns, if they don't get Watkins, I'd like to see either a WR or QB taken...who, not sure yet, but I wouldn't be opposed to Carr. But regardless of where a QB is taken, I'd like the Browns to at least take 2 QB's this draft and wouldn't be opposed to the Bills trying to get Murray in the third round since Manuel may have a tendency to get hurt often with his style of play.

The Browns have made some better draft day decisions since the Butch Davis era, I only hope it continues to improve.  I somewhat understand what their needs are, but I just don't see how Johnny Manziel helps them, I hope I'm wrong.  I'd like to see:

Sammy Watkins, Late 1st Rd QB, Carlos Hyde, Offensive line and then build depth through the later rounds.

Huge Browns fan! Love the draft as you tell by the numerous comment I've posted during the Browns' Draft thread. In that honor one last mock draft of what the Browns are (hopefully) going to do.

1 - Sammy Watkins - WR

1 - Teddy Bridgewater - QB

2 - Keith McGill - CB

3 - Jack Mewhort - OL

3 - Bishop Sankey - RB

4 - Shayne Skov - ILB

4 -  C.J. Fiedorowicz - TE (Depth)

5 -  Anthony Steen - G (Depth)

6 - Kenny Ladler - S (Depth)

7 - Keith Wenning - QB (Depth)

*Edit* (I wouldn't mind the Browns drafting Kenny Guiton over Keith Wenning)

I would like to see the Browns grab Chris Borland in the middle rounds. The guy is a playmaker and they may be able to get him as a steal.

No matter what they do early on, I'd like to see them address all needs. There is not 1 "can't miss" player in the draft, so I don't want to see them trade away picks to snag one guy. The Browns need help at guard, right tackle, middle linebacker, quarterback, cornerback, and running back.

Here's hoping they hit on a few of these needs and improve. I'm sick of the Browns finishing last in the AFC North.

I_Run_The_Dave's picture

Here's why I don't want the Browns to draft Manziel:

I think he'll be a bust, BUT, on the off chance that he actually is successful and the Browns make the playoffs, I don't want to hear this punk open his mouth about how he saved the franchise.  I'd rather see the Browns ride to glory on the backs of Carlos Hyde and Kenny G.

+1 HS
ohst8buxCP's picture

How can anyone call him a punk? Sure he made some bad decisions but all he really did was drink a few beers and enjoy his time winning the Heisman. Would You really not do the same? I'd probably do a lot worse. It's not like he got arrested or anything. He's got some swagger which translates to success on the football field, I actually like it but to each his own I guess.

-1 HS
SavannahBuck's picture

"Punk" may be the wrong word. Arrogant is probably better. Browns fans stick together. We are a community. We pick each other up after every football season, and we get each other excited for the upcoming season. Its never about this player or that player. It's about the Browns, the Dawg Pound, and the city of Cleveland. Manziel is all about himself. He's all about the glitz and glamour, and "hey everybody, look at me!" The cash signs, all the selfies, and just generally acting like a spoiled little rich kid. If I thought for one second that he could bring a championship to Cleveland, I'd be all for it, but the guy is not a winner.

Hall's a good Nickel when he's healthy -- he's just getting old and his health is suspect.

With the age in our secondary and Kirkpatrick not emerging, snagging a physical corner like Dennard is really smart.

Roby would've been an interesting pick.  He has incredible upside, but I worry about his technique; in a year or two, could be a monster.  He also seemed to lack interest last season, and while I understand some buyer's remorse at missing out at NFL, that always makes me doubt their success on the next level (see Gholston, Vernon).

I'll be rooting for Roby no matter where he goes (and I hope he falls to the Bengals, but I want NIU's Jimmie Ward more), but I'm glad we got Dennard first.  He may not be Roby's equal in athleticism, but he's a master technician -- I'll take that anyday.

It doesn't matter who we have at QB if Gordon is the only legit WR on the roster. If they don't take Marqise Lee they are foolish. IMO they need a pair of WR's  Lee with perhaps Paul Richardson or the Mathews kid from Vandy would be nice help.  Gilbert was a shock to me. But as a Browns fan I'm happy knowing we got the #1 corner and the top Playmaking QB along with banking another 1st round pick next year. Hard to top that. Manziel is classic boom or bust, and at 22 I'm ok with it. I would have been pissed if he was taken 4th. It doesn't hurt as much if he fails.  They have to get him help at WR right away. I hated throwing that 3rd rounder away to move up 4 spots, but apparently Farmer thought someone was moving up to take him ahead of 26. Possibly Houston.  Who knows.  I'm excited, I like that he and Hoyer will push each other.

Dustin Fox was our leading tackler as a corner.... because his guy always caught the ball.

I understand.  Wasn't a Manziel fan before, but I will be now.  Hope he's not a bust.

Watkins at 4 and Bridgewater at 26 would have been fine by me.  The Buffalo 1st round pick next year was a nice move, though.  And, we did get the highest rated CB in the draft.

Not a bad night, IMO.  Now let's get a WR, RB and LB.  Should be doable.

Top CB and probably the most talented QB along with another 1st round pick from Buffalo..... I'd say that's sitting pretty good. Add Marqise Lee tomorrow and the Browns will be looking very good.  I'm not big on Johnny's persona, but the kid can play and improvise. I hate saying it, but maybe an arrogant, talented little punk like this is the spark this franchise needs.

Damn some of these Browns fans need to lay off the sauce.  It's a work night remember folks?

  • Top corner in the draft
  • Top QB on your board
  • 1st rounder (probably top 15) next year
  • Only give up a third and a fifth

Brownies are the winners of the night, regardless if you're a JM fan (which I am not) and absolutely robbed the Bills who essentially used two first round picks on Watkins (he's good but he better be All-Pro to justify that trade)

Leading up to the 4th pick of the draft it felt like time was going by so slow. I entered the draft wanting the Browns to draft Johnny, but after the Jay Glazer report, I knew they weren't going to draft him at 3.The only way I knew the Browns would take Johnny would be through a trade down. So when they made that trade with the Bills I was happy, but cautious because I saw on twitter that they were wanting a corner. I thought that could have been a smoke screen to avoid other teams jumping in front of pick 9. So when the 9th pick rolls around and they announced Justin Gilbert, I was pissed. I probably said about every curse word in the book. After settling down, I started to realize what a great pick Gilbert was, and then the rumor came about trying to trade with the Titans, so I immediately began having hope that Johnny was still in play. I had a feeling Johnny would take a drop after we passed on him at 9, and Im thrilled that he became a Brown in the end.

This is a new era of Browns football. This is the first time I can remember where I can say the Browns are moving towards a playoff team.Ray Farmer is walking out of the draft looking like a genius. Drafted a potential pro bowl cb to go along side you top 5 cb in the league. If the Browns somehow end up with Carlos Hyde (and Marquise Lee is Im being greedy) this could be the draft we look back at say, "This is what made the Browns a dynasty."

Love what the Browns did in this draft. Grabbed the top corner while also adding a 1st round pick, and grabbed a guy that is very boom or bust, but definitely has the highest ceiling of any QB in this draft. With their 2nd and 3rd tomorrow I'd like to see the Browns address OG and WR, and later use their 4th rounders to pick up an ILB and FS. Something like this:

2nd- Xavier Su'a-Filo (OG) or Marqise Lee (WR)
3rd-Donte Moncrief (WR) or Gabe Jackson (OG)
4th-Shayne Skov (ILB), Dion Bailey (FS)

I like what you are thinking I would go with.

2nd - Marqise Lee (WR) or Carlos Hyde (RB) or Xavier Su'a-Filo (G)

3rd - Jack Mawhort (RT) or Jarvis Landry (WR) or Allen Robinson (WR)

4th (2 picks) - Shayne Skov (ILB) and Andre Williams (RB) or Laurent Duvernay-Tardif (RT)

6th -  Crockett Gillmore (TE) or Devon Kennard (DL) or Kenny Ladler (FS)

7th - Kenny Guiton (QB) or Keith Wenning (QB) or C.J. Barnett (SS)

William's picture

I like Hyde, I think he'll be a good NFL back, but with Tate on the roster and with Shanahan's zone-blocking scheme, the Browns can wait until the later rounds to pick up a guy that will be a back up, personally I'd like to see Dri Archer taken in one of the later rounds. I like multiple WRs in the 2nd, like Lee, Robinson, Latimer and Matthews, and for OGs I like Su'a-Filo and Jackson. I think Duvernay-Tardif could be a huge steal in the 4th round, he's one big-ass Québécois, and has a lot of raw talent and looks like he could factor in at RT or RG. I'd also prefer Keith Wenning over Kenny Guiton in the 6th-7th round.

Danify's picture

Only reason I'm thinking Hyde is both Tate and Lewis have history of being injured. Plus, I will admit it, my Scarlet and Gray homer colors are showing.

I can't believe that the Browns drafted someone who makes me already miss Weeden.  Gilbert may have been the top corner on some boards, but not all.  What I heard about his poor tackling was worrisome.

Actually, I think that the 22nd pick screwed them up big time;,  I hope they take Hyde.  Lee has a some injury issues (as does Tate).  They don't need a guard but a tackle, so Schwartz can move inside.  Of all the WR left, I think Robinson or maybe the other kid from LSU.  Maybe Mewhort in the 3rd?
