Kyrie and the Cavs

Not sure how many of you guys just watched that Cavs game but man is Kyrie amazing. I knew he was good before this weekend but after what he did over all star weekend (30+ in the rising stars game, 3pt title, and 15 pts in the all star game) and after watching him drop 20 in the last 7 minutes of the 4th quarter tonight i'm in awe. This kid has the potential to be a top 5 player in the NBA in the next few years. That plus the possibility of Lebron and Oden coming to Cleveland and all the 1st round picks they have, it's pretty hard not to be excited about being a Cavs fan right now.

If LeBron wins another ring or 2 in the next 2 years before his opt out, I think the odds go up a ton. If he gets 2 or 3 rings, wins maybe his 4th or 5th MVP, he won't have a whole lot more to prove. I could be wrong, but I think he would want to make amends with his hometown team and bring them a title. It sure would silence all the critics, and I think would significantly improve his legacy

Slowly being turned in favor of forgiving LeBron's transgressions. Wary of buying into the possibility of him returning to the Cavs in a couple years - but have to admit, he is so far and away the best player in the game right now it is ridiculous.

Trust me i know. I hate myself for even thinking about it. I hated Lebron, i want to still hate him but slowly I'm starting to think i would accept him back with open arms. If he wins another championship this year or next i think there's a good possibility it happens.

Doubt they take Oladipo. He is far too much like Waiters to use a top 5ish pick on. They need a bigger guy, whether it's a big 3 man or a power forward, to compliment one of the top young front courts in the league. I really like Anthony Bennett out of UNLV, 6'8" with a solid outside game and post game

Bennett would be a solid pick. Hopefully we get high enough in the lottery to get Mclemore or Shabazz Mohamed, not quite sold on Nerlens Noel...

William's picture

The team needs a small forward and another center, as I think Varejao should get shopped, so I'd like them to grab a guy like Otto Porter. I'm not as down on Zeller as a lot of Cavs fans seem to be. His defense is lacking, but really what rookie's defense isn't lacking? I mean Waiters seems to be worse at defending than Zeller, however one area that Zeller needs to improve is rebounding. At 7' he should be hauling in more than 6-7 rebounds a game. Also I don't get why Cleveland doesn't run more with guys like Irving, Waiters, Thompson and Zeller.

Cavs don't run more bec they can't get stops. Its hard to run when ur taking the ball out of the other teams basket. For kyrie to become the best pg in the game he needs to play better defense which I think he's capable of he just has to use all his juice on offense with this team. When ur pg plays great d ur whole teams def improves a lot as we get to see with craft and scott

I have already resigned myself to Kyrie leaving as soon as his contract is up. My years as a Cleveland fan have caused me to abandon all hope of his staying. He is a special talent and I will enjoy him while he wears the wine and gold, but do not speak to me of a few years down the road or of others who have chosen to take their talents elsewhere. I have not the stomach for it.

ohst8buxCP's picture
ohst8buxCP on 21 Feb 2013 - 12:44am #

I'm a younger Cleveland fan so maybe i'm just naive but i think there's a lot of incentives for him staying in Cleveland:

Pros

1.) I might be wrong but i think the Cavs can pay him more than any other team,

2.) Young improving team with Waiters, Thompson and Zeller and i think he understands what we're building towards,

3.) Byron Scott is by far the best coach he could possibly have as a young developing PG,

4.) he has a good relationship with Dan Gilbert and the front office and last but not least.......

5.) i want to throw up saying it) but if Lebitch does decide to come back it would almost force him to stay.

Cons

1.) It's Cleveland

2.) We currently suck

They can pay him more -- and of course, they're the only ones who can pay him NOW, which is always going to be an advantage -- but it's not a huge amount more at this level.

Odds are that Irving would definitely re-up after his rookie deal, which Kevin Durant has done and what LeBron also did (not that a lot of people remember it), but after that, the clock starts ticking for the Cavs to get that second superstar; otherwise Irving is going to lose patience.

The problem that less glamorous NBA teams have is that hardly anybody who is a legitimately great player ever leaves for money, because the money is pretty similar everywhere -- and it's similar everywhere because there's both a team salary cap and a cap on player salaries. This is unlike the NFL, where there's no cap on individual salaries and where teams in smaller markets can typically hold onto players they really want, by using their power position to re-sign them while they can.

It would be hard to pay one NBA player $25 million and still field a championship-caliber team, but the fact that the Cavs couldn't do that with James eliminated a major trump card they could have had, and also increased the incentive for other teams to clear cap space for him leading up to The Decision (the Heat probably wouldn't have taken that risk if they knew the Cavs had the power to really outbid them).

Irving is basically the Cavs for the foreseeable future.  They will obviously pick up the team option for his fourth season, making him a restricted free agent.  They can then match any contract he receives.  He isn't leaving anytime soon.

We need to build this team around Kyrie. This is a HUGE offseason. Lots of cap room and tradable assets (young players/ picks). The Cavs can not sit around and wait for the weasel to make another crippling "decision". Go out this year and build around the kid and see what happens. If for some reason bringing the other guy back in 14 is a possibility then cross that bridge when we get there.

I really like the idea of Demarcus Cousins. He is bat shit crazy but pairing him inside with TT could be a dynamic front court.

I don't see LeBron coming back at this point.  I don't even know what that first home game would be like if he did come back.  Strangely, I would accept him just because it gives the Cavs a chance to be winners again.  If he did come back, say all the right things, etc., I'd probably forgive him.

Irving is the real deal and best PG in the league IMO. Waiters turned out to be a not so bad pick so far and Zellers is decent. Draft a wing/forward who can defend and score a little and they will be in contention.

Havent seen a PG score with ease, have an elite handle with a deadly 3 point shot since Iverson(I know he wasn't a PG but can't think of anyone else that compares). Kyries Fun to watch for sure!

Any opinions on who they should draft this year?

Nah, Rondo just gets triple doubles every now and then, and turns into a HoF PG in the playoffs.

Look at how bad the Clippers looked when Paul was injured. I find Paul to be almost as annoying as Wade, but I would have loved it if he hadn't been stolen from the Lakers by Stern. He may not get you 30 every night, but he puts his mark on every game.

Rondo is way overrated. Terrible jump shooter, and his PER is below 20. Paul, Parker, Westbrook, Irving and Rose(last year) all have a PER above 20 while Rondo doesn't. He's a solid distributor, but NBA point guards have to score and Rondo isn't very good at it.

Buckeyevstheworld's picture
Buckeyevstheworld on 22 Feb 2013 - 12:57am #

So a guy that gets 44pts/8rebs/10ast in the ECF is way overrated? Good to know.

ohst8buxCP's picture
ohst8buxCP on 22 Feb 2013 - 1:32am #

Rondo has absolutely no jump shot and is wildly inconsistant in the regular season. He has his moments in the playoffs but it's nothing Kyrie couldn't pull off. Id put PG's RIGHT NOW (if Rose wasn't injured) as:

1.)Paul

2.)Parker

3.)Westbrook

4/5.) Rose/Irving

6.) Maybe Rondo or Deron Williams

Kyrie has the chance to be at the top of the list in a year or two

Buckeyevstheworld's picture
Buckeyevstheworld on 22 Feb 2013 - 2:02am #

Rose is a better player. A better PG? Absolutely not.

So you're saying this current Kyrie could pull off Rondo's 44pts/8rebs/10ast game?

I like Kyrie a too, but you guys are vastly underrating Rondo

William's picture

You're using one game as an example. That game is a HUGE statistical outlier. Rondo's career averages are 11.1/8.3/4.5, which are just average.

Buckeyevstheworld's picture
Buckeyevstheworld on 22 Feb 2013 - 3:18am #

One game? Did you watch the series?

Game 3: 21pts/6rebs/10ast

Game 4: 15pts/5rebs/15ast

Game 5: 7pts/6rebs/13ast

Game 6: 21pts/4rebs/10ast

Game 7: 22pts/10rebs/14ast

He may not have duplicated that Game 2 scoring performance, but he played fantastic against Miami. Is his jumper meh? Sure. But to act as if that doesn't make this man a great player is laughable.

"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.

William's picture
William on 22 Feb 2013 - 3:41am #

Again, you're now pointing to one single series. Look at his career numbers and tell me he's anything better than average or above average. The numbers don't lie, he's a solid PG, but nothing special.

Buckeyevstheworld's picture
Buckeyevstheworld on 22 Feb 2013 - 3:50am #

William's picture
William on 22 Feb 2013 - 4:54am #

Up until this year, he'd only averaged more than 12 points a game in one season, and he's never averaged more than 5.6 rebounds a season. His assist numbers are nice, but in today's NBA, a PG has to do more than distribute. He's an average-above average PG. There is no way he is a Top 5 PG in the NBA today.

Buckeyevstheworld's picture
Buckeyevstheworld on 22 Feb 2013 - 5:21am #

So you're saying the PG that has more triple-doubles than any other of the 4 best PGs in the league isn't top 5? Wow.

The thing about Rondo is that you get TNT/FOX Rondo and Comcast Sportsnet Rondo. TNT/FOX Rondo will give you 20/15/7 a game. Comcast Sportsnet Rondo gives you 10/12/5. The main difference is that TNT/FOX Rondo is aggressive and takes it to the cup and Comcast Sportsnet Rondo likes to dribble at the top of the key for 10 uninterrupted seconds before doing anything else.

Jamison did nothing to impress me during his entire time in Cleveland. Never consistent enough and did minimal in the playoffs. Amar'e would have been huge, especially in that series against Boston with Garnet down low. Jamison only got to double digits 3 times in that series and scored 9 and 5, in the last two games down the stretch. Jamison might not have been a scrub but Amar'e is a star (an idiot sometimes, but he has twice the talent Jamison does)

Living in NY and watching the Knicks be thankful the Cavs don't have Amare..waste of money! Not to mention he's about as smart as a basketball rim. In the last 2 seasons he's:

1. Punched a glass fire extinguisher cover and hurt his hand.

2. Hurt his back trying to do stupid dunks during warmups.

3. Calls some random dude on twitter a "fag".

4. Praises and promotes Christopher Dorners manifesto on twitter.

Not the kind of "star" I want on my team.
