Since Tom Ryan was hired a few years ago, he has retransformed OSU into a dominant program. Hellickson was a great coach, but the program slipped quite a bit over his last few years. Apparently there were some issues with Ohio wrestling coaches, and we weren't getting of the elite Ohio high school wrestlers (I could be wrong about that). But Ryan has done a great job with recruiting. Logan Stieber won the national championship in his weight division last year (133 lb). We are currently undefeated, and ranked #4 in the country. We are poised to be in the top ten for years to come. Hope that helps!
Wow that's great! Correct me if I'm wrong but Penn St. is usually one of the best in the nation right? Do we have a realistic shot at beating them in a duel?
Penn St's dominance is actually fairly recent. They went something like 60 years between national championships ('53-'11 I think). Right now they are kicking butt and taking names, but ten years ago they weren't necessarilly on the same level.
That being said, the B1G is typically the best conference from top to bottom in the country, with the B12 historically #2 (IIRC)
A few years back we were national runner up twice. I think we are rated 4th and undefeated so far. Our next match is against Iowa and they are the elite program of the conference. However, OSU was able to beat them last year (first win in a LONG time) and Iowa really hasn't been as dominate as they once were the last two years. In all, PSU has held the crown the last two years and the fact that the B1G has several teams ranked allows for great competition.
Its gonna be another rough year on the mat but I'm confident OSU can hold its on.
Sidenote: If only those kids from St.Eds* went to OSU more often...
*Won the last 14 State titles. If this number is wrong please insert correct number.
Ohio State's band SLAUGHTERED Michigan's band. If this were a football game, it would have been Florida State vs. Savannah State. - SB Nation following OSU vs. UM 2012
Yea Iowa/Oklahoma have historically been far and away the best wrestling states. I think 2-3 years ago OSU was in a great position to win NCAAs and, from bias OSU fans, we got screwed out of it. I don't know the sport so well but I AGREE THEY GOT HOSED only because I'm a buckeye
The Ohio State-Iowa match will be on the Big Ten network on January 4th at 7:00 P.M. (Not 100% sure of the time.)
This is a huge matchup between the #4 ranked Buckeyes and #5 ranked Hawkeyes.
Ohio State beat Iowa 21-9 last year, their first win over the Hawkeyes in 40 years!
Matchup of the night will be #1 ranked, defending NCAA champion Logan Stieber vs. #2 ranked Tony Ramos. Stieber beat Ramos 3x last year (dual, Big Ten final, NCAA semi), with the semi being a very close match.
Ohio State needs everything to go right to win this match, and getting a victory in Carver-Hawkeye is damn near impossible.
St. Edward has only won the last two state titles, but 15 of the last 16. They lost to Wadsworth in 2010 in one of the greatest state tournament races in Ohio history. The most impressive streak about St. Edward is they have had at least one alumn become an NCAA All American every year since 1982. Outside of Blair Academy in New Jersey, it's the best high school program in the country.
Iowa and Oklahoma have not been dominant at the high school level in decades, although Iowa and Oklahoma State are the two most storied programs in college wrestling. Hands down the best talent comes out of Pennsylvania, with Ohio being a solid #2. That's part of the reason Ohio State has been so successful in recent years, Tom Ryan has really put a fence up and kept the best talent in state. For too many years, other Big Ten schools loaded up on Ohio kids, particularly Michigan, who had a real pipeline to St. Ed's among other places (National Champs Ryan Bertin and Andy Hrovat being the two biggest ones that got away). Cael Sanderson has done the same thing at Penn State, hence it becoming the best program in the country. For years, Penn State didn't get anywhere near the best Pennsylvania talent, and the ones they did get tended to flame out. Not the case under Cael. I don't think Ohio State matches up well at all with Penn State this year, the Buckeyes are probably a year or two away from really competing for a team National Title.
It's a shame Logan didn't wrestle against Iowa, but I get wanting to keep him healthy. I had heard earlier in the week that he had a leg injury and may not go. But if you haven't seen him wrestle, he's the real deal and I highly recommend it. He might be the best pound for pound wrestler in college. He was the top ranked recruit in his class (Jadaveon Clowney if you will) and has done nothing to disappoint, winning a national championship in his redshirt freshman season.
The Buckeyes also have the top recruit in the class of 2013 in Bo Jordan of Graham High School in St. Paris, Ohio. Jordan's dad was an All American at Wisconsin and his uncle was a 2x NCAA Champ. Bo is as good a high school wrestler as I've seen, and may step in right away as a freshman. And last week, the Buckeyes got a verbal from the #2 recruit in the junior class, Kyle Snyder, a future 197 pounder from Maryland. So the well doesn't seem to be running dry anytime soon. Urban Meyer eat your heart out.
+1 for the great breakdown, and while Logan Stieber is an incredible wrestler, I'd have to say that right now Kyle Dake is the best pound for pound wrestler, and will probably go down as one of the greatest in NCAA history. Dake just beat David Taylor for the 2nd time this season a few days ago at the Southern Scuffle.
Wow. I watched my first college wrestling meet when we wrestled against Iowa on BTN and I came away shocked by the scrambling ability I saw across the board. It was insane!
True story: TRB once saw Lance Palmer at Cluck-a-doodle-doo (when it used to be on Worthington), he was with another wrestler, and TRB can't remember who it was. This was probably a month after he lost to Metcalf in the NCAA semifinals.
TRB asked "Yo, bro, are you Lance Palmer!?"
LP: "Yeah".
TRB: "Cool, good luck in mma bro".
LP: "Thanks". *to lady at counter* "Give me a MegaShark".

Realistic? Yes. Likely? Not this year. You never know what will happen when brave men challenge destiny.

This reminds me a joke I heard while golfing.
Here it goes:
"She's not a good wrestler, but you should see her box."
True story: TRB once saw Lance Palmer at Cluck-a-doodle-doo (when it used to be on Worthington), he was with another wrestler, and TRB can't remember who it was. This was probably a month after he lost to Metcalf in the NCAA semifinals.
