Robin van Persie to Manchester United, EPL Season

Robin van Persie was just sold to Manchester United for £24 million. Thoughts on this and the upcoming season?

Yes I understand the Buckeyes are in camp right now, but the EPL's season starts in 3 days so it is more exciting at this point in time.

As a Man U fan, I couldn't be more excited.  Getting Kagawa and now RVP is a huge upgrade in the ability of the team to threaten opposing teams.  The hard part is getting a solid MF and backline in place.  Kagawa helps in the attack, but the decline of Ferdinand is a huge hole to fill, and Vidic needs to be solid again.  Still, a great time to be a Man U fan.  Hope we can beat City this year, though.

What's English premier league soccer? And why is it being posted on a Buckeye website?

I think this is really a win-win for both clubs. Man. United gets an excellent forward who's in form, and Arsenal dumps off an inury prone 29 year old for £24 million. This allows Arsenal to get Yann M'Vila as a legitimate CDM, and it provides Man. United with a backup for if/when Rooney goes down or just needs a breather.

This was listed under the other sports topic. Believe it or not, a lot of people on this site watch soccer. Also the Browns, Bengals, Cavs, Yankees, Reds, and Indians are discussed on this site frequently and none of them are athletic teams with any relation to the Ohio State Buckeyes, so I fail to see what the problem is.

RVP is a great player, but not a classic Man Utd player; he seems flighty and easily injured.  He's also relatively old, 29, and you wonder whether they'll get more than two whole seasons out of him.  I also wonder at the number of strikers on the team:  RVP, Rooney, Berbatov (if he's not sold), Welbeck, Henriquez, Chicharito, Macheda, and Powell.  They've brought in three strikers just this summer, but with Rooney and RVP taking up playing time, you wonder at how they'll develop the younger ones.  I would have preferred a complete central-midfielder to complement Kagawa, Carrick, Clerverly, and Anderson (Fletcher just can't be depended on, Giggs and Scholes can't be depended on for much longer), but what do I know?

Another brilliant post from Buckeyejason, I can tell he was a football jock in high school that thought he was awesome. But about the comment, I am a big Arsenal fan so this really blows. I obviously knew he wasn't coming back to Arsenal but going to ManU hurts a lot, I expect Rooney and Van Persie to score a crazy amount of goals and puts ManU as a favorite now.

If my Magpies could sell Andy Carroll for 35mil last year, ManU getting van Persie for 24mil is a good deal.

@SARASO, good luck to your team this year (except, of course, against Man Utd).  It's always better when New Castle and, oddly enough, Leeds are contending for a title (although Leeds is out of it permanently, I fear); I love my old hatreds the most.  Can't stand Premier League new boys Chelsea (and to a certain extent Citeh), but in a different way than Arsenal, Liverpool, New Castle, and Leeds.

I can't stand Chelsea or Man City, they along with Real Madrid and Barcelona are everything that is wrong with soccer and the lack of a cap limit. Leeds has fallen too far to ever rise again, and Liverpool is turning into a white trash spectacle (Charlie Adams anybody?). This move doesn't hurt Arsenal as much as most people think, due to the acquisitions of Giroud, Podolski and Cazorla. Giroud is going to be an excellent striker, the guy is dominant aerially, has great touch, and can score with his back to the goal or from far out. Podolski is already a known commodity and Cazorla is a tiny Spanish wizard, much like Xavi. I honestly think United would have been better served by signing another midfielder instead of another forward, then again their top two forwards now did combine for 57 Premier League goals last year.

As galling as it is to lose to Barca every year, I can't say that they do it the wrong way; they have a fabulous youth program -- so good that they can't even take all of the top flight players that come out of it. I really just wish that Man Utd had one midfielder that could run Xavi down and take those games by the throat. What would they give for a young Roy Keane (or even a young Gattuso).
