Someone in the Skull session made a good suggestion so I figured I'd start a baseball thread since really the last few days there have been a lot of discussions and 2, I think the baseball talk in the Skull Sessions annoys some people.  With a forum topic, we can discuss the sport and our favorite teams and not bother thread jack the Skully's.  So let's talk about the Redlegs, the Ohio Cup, or whatever other team you like here!

I'll start us off.  GO REDS.  I think Chapman is in some sort of a mental slump.  And it's obvious the Reds aren't throwing their best roster choices out there during this series.  What's up with that?

When I signed up for this site, I never would have guessed it to be such a great place to talk baseball.

Anywho, anybody think that Dusty sits Chapman tonight if he has a chance for a save?

Good for you BT. Now all you Reds fans can tell each other how good they are and I know not to click on it.

I think Chapman definitely has some stuff going on mentally, but I really fear there's something physical going on too.  I wouldn't be shocked, though, if Arredondo or Marshall closes it out tonight if the opportunity is there.

As for the Roster, meh, I don't have a problem with what they've done really.  Only think I would of changed was play Hanigan instead of Mesoraco, just because Hanigan has been hitting so well.  Rolen had 2 hits in his first game back, and recently Heisey, Frazier, and Ludwick have been hitting pretty well.  They've been terrible in this series though ugh.

The baseball talk hasn't been all Reds RBuck there have been Indians fans chiming in.  Yesterday I even say a go Pirates, and there were Whitesox and Yankee fans too.  Anyway, obviously not everyone likes baseball, that's why it's here and people don't have to suffer through it on the skull sessions.

Well now that I read Steinbrenner was a Buckeye, Go Yankees!

When told OSU set school record for 50+ games this year, UFM said "That's good. We're gonna break that next year."

OSUbias... I don't know if anything has ever officially or unofficially been said about this, but I always thought Steinbrenner signed Drew Henson to get him away from Michigan.  He signed him to a large contract, and it was a gamble.  Did he do it for the Bucks?

OSUBias's picture
OSUBias on 20 Jun 2012 - 3:01pm #

First of all, that would be amazing. I guess I'd lean toward that being a bit of a reach, if only because I assume his will/determination to make the Yankees win every year would trump the Buckeye fan in him. But, because I like any conspiracy talk with any sort of basis, I will bite. If anything he probably saw it as a win win. I'm sure he really thought Henson would pan out, and could afford to overpay to make sure he got him, and if that makes things a bit easier on his old school next November, no loss, right? Doesn't actually seem that far fetched to me, really.

I only want to chat about baseball if it's an opportunity to threadjack.

I think I'll go over to one of the daily recruiting update threads and start talking smack about the Indians there.

If I stick around here, someone will start talking about sabermetrics, the designated hitter rule, and the Pine Tar Incident.

LOL, we can leave Sabermetrics to Billy Bean, the nerds, and the fictional character Jonah Hill played in moneyball.  For instance, SI keeps doing power ratings based off of how many wins and losses a team should of had.  They have the Cardinals as the number 3 overall team and Pitt as the number 26 team or something insane like that.  That stats guys can have their power ratings and tell us what should be happening.  I'll stick to real life and what is ACTUALLY happening.

BrewstersMillions's picture

Ok, I'll be that guy. BT-You might want to get a grasp on the metrics of baseball. Its the way the game is heading, like it or not. Sabremetrics isn't an accurate term as its all not "Sabremetrics". The idea behind metrics is to take out dated ways of studying what an effective player is and flipping it on its head. You can stick to real life and black and white. I'll continue to watch baseball in color and let math tell me when someone is truly an asset to his team and not just an inflated set of numbers

:D

For what its worth, I'm just venturing into the world of WAR ratings, OBPS, BABIP and so on. I am by no means a numbers elitist or an expert on the subject but in THE hardest sports league in the world to build a winner in, anything that helps GM's get their teams better should be applauded. Building winning baseball isn't easy if you don't have one of the three big checkbooks in baseball. Anything that aids teams is ok with me.

@BREWSTER - I've been reading RedReporter a lot of late, and they are crazy over there about such figures.  It's pretty crazy how batting average and ERA are being eschewed for OPS+ and WHIP; but the statistical correlations are pretty fascinating, especially when you figure in measures like WAR.

Though I do agree with BTALBERT as well in that of people get so caught up in statistical measures that they don't even look at the team's performance, which is a serious error in my opinion.  Baseball's unique because stats actually mean a lot (thanks to the massive sample size); and when used in concert with qualitative observations, you can really analyze games.

BrewstersMillions's picture

I agree completley Hodge. I won't write metrics off all together, I also won't use just numbers to make my mind up for me. When used as A tool it can make for a more interesting baseball watch.

Brewster, I actually have no problem with advanced stats in general.  I don't think it's hogwash or anything like that.  The old big 3 categories are a bit silly in general, but I do think batting average is an important and impressive Stat.  I think you need to be savy on both sides if you are a GM or Scout for that matter.  You need to be able to take a deeper look at the numbers, but you also have to be able to look at a player and be able to evaluate them as well.

That's the humor I find in it all.  The new generation of baseball fans who are big into stats always make comments about the older generation being stuck in their ways and refusing to change their view on baseball.  The stats folks, however, (at least the ones really tied up in the stats) seem to only care about WAR and OPS or OPS+ and all that and don't use just the old eyeball test.  Sometimes that's what you need too.  Basically, they are doing the same thing they always ridicule the old school for doing, getting set in their ways and refusing to acknowledge anyone's ideas but their own.

I've heard some of the stat heads say BA with RISP isn't important.  You can't control how many times you get up with RISP, or a lot of times getting a hit requires some luck, you can hit a ball really hard at someone etc.  It's no coincidence though, that a guy like Joey Votto who hits well over 300 normally, bats well over 400 with RISP.  Why is his average higher in late innings than earlier innings etc?  Because the guy rises to the occasion.  That kind of stuff can't be quantified.

So, yes I absolutely believe sabermatrics and advanced stats are really important, but I also think just good old fashioned scouting where you use the eyeball test on a guy is important too.

Back to Steinbrenner for a minute.  He wanted to own the Indians, but the Indians passed.  I'm an Indians fan, and I still have to laugh at that.  I can only wonder how much better the Indians would've been with him in the owner's box.  I know it probably wouldn't come close to being the same success as the Yankees, but it's interesting to wonder.

BT, Stat heads who criticize the old timers for not acknowledging the new wave stuff are guilty of the exact same thing they are criticizing people of. Stat heads see numbers as the only real way to measure something. No matter how much stuff is out there, nothing can beat a guy who can see talent in another player. You can't quantify a high school kid or a college player with limited numbers against sometimes sub par competition. Stat heads like to use their numbers as the only way to measure a player-which of course is what they hate. I think you have to be able to see what a guy can do in the field or how the ball jumps off his bat and so on. I like using numbers for actual major leaguers to determine what we think we already know but as a scouting tool-well...you still need to see it. I agree there.

I am frustrated with buckeye baseball. With our facilities and money we should be a top 10 to 15 team every year. Why do we continually underperform?

Playing those February and March games in B1G country has to suck.  That is a sport where I would say weather would actually impact where a player would go.  I can remember some early season games here in NKY in my highschool years where we had snow flurries coming down while we were playing.  I couldn't imagine playing a game in Wisconsin even in early April.

I can't figure out what is up with Lincecum.  The guy was so good.  Last year he was still decent, but this year he's just been horrible.  I like Cain and Bumgardner a lot.  They have a really nice rotation if Lincecum gets it together.

Brewster, I agree with you completely.  I think the metrics and advanced stats do a very good job of allowing a team to determine what a player's value is, or can they find that gem of a player who may not be that popular or expensive who can put up good numbers.  I wonder, though, will Moneyball continue to allow smaller market teams to compete or will the agents get just as savy using it and drive the overall price up for guys who at one time weren't viewed to be that good.

I do like WAR to compare guys of different eras and historic season they have had, but I don't think it is a good measure for what a guy is doing right now. I think Joey Votto's WAR right now is 4.7.  Replace him with just about anyone, as good as he's been so far this year, in this lineup, especially with how bad the offense was in April and May and I don't think they are even a 30 win team.

I know the season is less than half over and if he continues on this pace the WAR number will go up signficantly, but I just don't like a stat like WAR for for right now.

What was up with that call @ second base in last night's game where the umpire called Santana safe on the play? Cozart bobbled the ball, but it still looked like he got the out. I'm shaking my head on why Votto (who fielded the grounder) didn't just run to first for the third out instead of throwing to second. I'm an Indians fan, but that looked like a bad call.
