We are going to screw around and not end up with a QB this year. Stop wasting time, Urban, and put the full court press on Travis Waller, who will be the best of this class.

MacG91's picture

Damn, really hoping to get him on campus again.

Just saw that Sterling Jenkins is committing tmw as well...not sure if that has already been mentioned, but tmw should be a huge day for Penn State.

Hey man, Auburn made the title game with a converted safety playing QB.
Maybe we just put 4 of our burners out there and run this mythical diamond formation all day.

For real though, hoping the staff has some aces up their sleeves that us internet chat nerds arent aware of.

+8 HS
d5k's picture

Not sure where the idea that a diamond formation was 4 playmakers came from.  It was more like 2 H-back/Tight ends along with QB and tailback when SF used it.  Then you get to change who you are reading with arc-blocks from the H backs.  Basically just using more single-wing concepts from back in the day.

Chief B1G Dump's picture
Thank you for the historical analysis of the formation.

Both Penn State IMO. I know its early, but damn Penn State is on fire. Gotta give credit where credit us due early in the process.

Agreed. They'll be at 15 commits after tomorrow and only taking ~20 or so according to 247, so they'll be pretty much done with 2015 and onto 2016. Insane.

Eph97's picture

They'll take the full 25 and make SEC style cuts. Franklin is ruthless in that regard.

Whoa Nellie's picture

I'm guessing no one at WHAC is "screwing around" or "wasting time".

I had a feeling James Franklin would recruit well at PSU, but good lord this is pretty amazing. I hate to admit that, but I wouldn't have expected this in 3 years let alone immediately. Tip of the cap from me. Burrell and Settle could very well end up there too

The fact that Burrell is publicly interested in watching Jenkins and Wimbush commit tomorrow (asked on Twitter)—in addition to knowing he's BFF's with PSU commit Adam McLean—makes me think Penn State's sitting well for him. Settle is another story.

Any credibility this post had was gone after that last sentence.

Pretty much. We're not at this stage yet, are we? The stage where we say a target (who wasn't a target at all 4 months ago and only is now because of commitments elsewhere) will be "better than ____ anyways"?

+1 HS
BassDropper's picture

Have been on the Travis Waller bandwagon since April 1st when Birm first introduced me to him. Need proof, here is the article Birm posted and my comment is first.

Wow, didn't even know Waller existed until now. He looks like the total package. Im starting leave the TG bandwagon. This may be my new #1

Need another, here is another post of me on the Waller bandwagon

Don't accuse me of saying "Waller will be better than ___ anyways," because I have pretty much stated that over a month ago when I saw his film. Don't fall in love with how many stars a player has, actually watch his film (assuming you know how to analyze film and not just fall in love with highlights)

Sucks to see that we probably will miss on Wimbush but it's good to see a potential rival recruit as well as Urban. Only going to make the B1G stronger going forward. If Michigan could get its shit together the B1G East could rival the SEC.

teddyballgame's picture

Waller will probably be going to oregon once they realize they can't get Murray.  It baffles me why OSU QB recruiting is so pathetic...

Danify's picture

It's ironic how similar this compares to Matta's troubles recruiting Centers the last few years.

nikolajz1's picture

Considering Urban has coached Alex Smith, Tim Tebow, and Braxton it is pretty baffling too. Not many coaches have as much success with QBs as Urban does. All 3 (including Braxton next year) are gonna have /had made millions of bucks.

+2 HS
TheTeam16's picture

All you have to do is look at success in the NFL. For these top flight recruits that is their be all-end all. They want to be successful in the NFL and get paid.

-1 HS
tae1986's picture

I think it is still too early to call tOSU QB recruiting "so pathetic."

First year of Urban Meyer era, we already had Cardale Jones committed.

Second year, Urban got the QB who he wanted in JT Barrett.

Third year was a struggle but I wouldn't call Stephen Collier "so pathetic" since he made it to Nike The Opening and it seems like he is a smart kid with a great potential.

This year.................. It's only May and we are still in on Terrance Gibson. Also, there will be new high school QBs on the rise when 2014 season starts.

jamesrbrown322's picture

With all due respect, outside of Pryor, OSU QB recruiting has always been pretty mediocre. There were guys like Zwick, Schoenhoft, and Mauhermann who were highly rated at their position, but the scouting report was that they were limited, and that certainly ended up being the case.

You also have to remember something that many of us forget - OSU does not produce quality NFL QBs. OSU has perennial produced NFL talent at almost every other position, hell even kicker and punter, but not at QB. It's honestly amazing that a program as historically successful as OSU has produced so few good QBs. Mike Tomczak was by far OSU's most successful NFL QB. Let that sink in...Mike...Tomzcak. No offense to him, he was serviceable. But if I am a highly touted QB looking for an NFL shot, I am going to consider:

1. The current staff and system (style of offense) in place,

2. The school's and/or staff's history of producing draftable QBs, and

3. The school's and/or staff's history of producing successful NFL QBs.

Unfortunately for the Buckeyes, none of those evaluations yield very positive results for sending QBs to the NFL, particularly QBs that are equipped to succeed at that level. I am a Buckeye through and through, and BLEED Scarlet and Gray. But I am also a realist, and know that Meyer's system requires an ATHLETE at QB, not necessarily a solid blue chip true dropback passer with NFL written all over him. However, the system still works, OSU still wins, and will compete for national titles. Nothing wrong with that. Just don't fool yourselves into thinking that Ohio State is a mecca for QBs. It's not. Heck, Purdue has a better legacy at the position.

Don't worry, Meyer and Co. will find the right athlete to run his system, and he'll win a couple of titles at OSU. Then we'll all look back and say, "Remember when we were all sweating out that 2014 class because they missed out on Wimbush and Gibson? God that was stupid!"

OSU069's picture

Umm Braxton Miller????? He was a five-star recruit and a big time prospect. J.T. Barrett was also pretty highly rated.

+2 HS
jamesrbrown322's picture

Granted, Brax was a big recruit, but I guess I was thinking big picture. I mean I love Miller, and he's a great college football player, but is he 1st round, NFL Franchise QB material? I guess time will tell.

My point was that, as a whole, year in and year out, Ohio State has never been a program that brings in elite, big time QB prospects with an NFL future, that's all. I did forget Barrett though. So we'll just have to wait and see how it all pans out. Hopefully, Miller gets drafted relatively early, and has a successful NFL career. But, do you know what I want more than that? NATIONAL TITLES. And Meyer and OSU have proven that they don't need a Joe Montana, Tom Brady (who was mediocre in college mind you), Peyton Manning, or Drew Brees to win titles. And I think that Meyer will continue to succeed by simply putting 5 OL and the 6 best athletes out on the field.

Wow really sucks.  Looks like he's PSU bound, though I can't figure out why.  He would have a legit shot at tOSU to start as a freshman.  Not going to happen at PSU.  Oh, well.  Positives are it's so early that we can move on early to other QBs OR, if Urban is adament about him we have a long time to try to flip him.

DenBuck's picture

Agree, he'd be our HERO and could lead this 2015 class. Don't get it. Don't get why we got nothing so far. Mystery. The odds the California kid comes to Ohio seem long too. Stevens or bust.

jamesrbrown322's picture

I think a big reason for the cliff jumping is that OSU is whiffing on national guys while blowing their chances with in state players. That is the game that you have to play. Sometimes you win, sometimes not so much. They're just on a cold streak and some of the guys that really like them are being quiet. If OSU's still at two recruits in August, then we may have BIG problem. But who knows? A bunch of guys like Harris, Kirk, Gibson, Burrell, Allen, and Clark could all plan to visit together because they plan to commit.

Gotta get TG on campus soon. And hey, who knows, Wimbush may still make a visit...

People aren't thinking logically though.  The way last season ended...left a lot of people feeling discontent and impatient.   Obviously, we can't win any games right now so the next best thing is progress in the form of recruiting.

AlwayzABuckeye614's picture

My guess is the newness of the coaching staff over there at PSU and the hype playing for a new energetic coach. I mean look how Meyer's first 2 years here had great recruits, I just hope the hype hasnt died down for OSU and Meyer.

No I'm not concerned in the least about this.  Urban Meyer may be the absolute BEST recruiter in the country.  It is very difficult if you look at the 2 deep at OSU, then look at the 15+ talented kids who redshirted last year.

Additionally, OSU will have a top 10 class.

I am not saying that it is planned (because I don't) but does anyone think that not having a top recruiting class every several years could be beneficial? Bama players were even complaining about a lot of incoming freshman were too self-entitled and that there were a lot of locker room issues going on. It is just a thought...

EvanstonBuckeye's picture

Often think of this. Maybe not beneficial, but not nearly as detrimental as some are making it out to be. And what constitutes an "off" class? Top Twenty?

Also, it's not as if we're going to only have five recruits this year. We'll fill the class for depth purposes, even if it's with (gasp) low four-star guys.

BuckeyeFreak4844's picture

We have UFM he has been pretty damn good on the recruiting trail.  You are not going to land everyone you want and if you dont land a 5 star or 4 star qb in every class so be it then you just have to mold and work with what you have.

If PSU gets Wimbush and Jenkins today, that puts them at 15. That would be the max they could take in this class. So their class in done....in May. 9 months before signing day.

I would love to see them keep these kids for the next 9 months when they struggle under Franklin's new system.

According to them, they're taking 25.

+2 HS
jamesrbrown322's picture

They have 15, plus Franklin will weed some out, as all new coaches do. Plus, they had 4 walk-ons who were awarded 1 year scholarships last year, which he can revoke and use for more talented players, so you gotta figure that 22-23 isn't out of the question. However, I am just making a semi-educated guess.
