MODs, go ahead and nuke this if it should be included in one of the other posts along this line.
Given just their records, their opponents W-L records, and a small measure of opponents' quality how would you rank these six nameless FBS football teams for the CFP? Assuming that all P-5 conferences are relatively equal, thus a win over a 4-4 SEC team is equal to a win over a 4-4 B1G team, and FCS wins are not counted. Try to be objective as possible, and avoid trying to figure out who the teams are. Tomorrow I'll give out the answer key.
Team | FBS Rec. | OPP REC | P5 Opp rec | p5 opp rec (w) | p5 opp rec (l) | wins over p5 opp > .500 |

P5 OPP REC (W) - record of P5 opponents a team beat
P5 OPP REC (L) - record of P5 opponents a team lost to
WINS OVER P5 OPP > .500 - number of P5 opponents with winning records a team beat
I guess no one else is playing, so I'll post the answers tonight. I turned on voting to pass out HS to everyone who played. Go easy on me with the DVs.
rank | your AVG RANK | LTR | TEAM | BEST P5 WINS |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 1.46 | B | IOWA | PITT(6-2), WISC (7-2) NORTHWESTERN (6-2) |
2 | 2.15 | A | MICH ST | ORE (5-3), TTUN (6-2) |
3 | 3.69 | C | tOSU | PSU (7-2) |
4 | 3.92 | D | 'BAMA | WISC (7-2), UGA (5-3), A&M (6-2)* |
5 | 4.25 | F | UF | OLE MISS (7-2), UGA (5-3) |
6 | 5.41 | E | ND | USC (5-3) |
*Mea Culpa - I gave Bama credit for one more win over a P-5 school with a winning record than I should have (3 instead of 4) in the OP. So that may have jumped UF ahead of the Tide, but I doubt it.
My take-aways: Iowa is completely undervalued. ND is only where they are because of Clemson. Bama is the best one-loss team, but they're record does not support being ahead of undefeated Iowa (or any other undefeated P-5 team), but it may support being ahead of Memphis. UF's record is just about as good as 'Bama's. The Buckeyes have the third best record in the B1G to this point in the season.
Let the debate rage.
