Perfect Offensive Balance

So far this season, Ohio State is averaging 230.0 yards per game rushing - and 230.0 yards per game passing.  If the coaches were looking for a balanced offense, they have achieved perfection.

Well, kind of.

While that degree of balance is certainly amazing, 460 yards per game of total offense is more than 50 yards per game under their averages of the past two seasons.

The shift in the Buckeye's offensive approach this year has undoubtedly contributed to incredible balance as well as a drop in overall productivity.  The deemphasis of the zone read was a logical reaction to the defensive schemes OSU had been facing - and would most likely continue to face - if some adjustments weren't made.

Any change in scheme can take a little getting used to - so some growing pains should have been expected.  Many of the mental errors the offense has made so far this season could surely be attributed to the players acclimating to a somewhat different system.

As Ohio State gets in to the meat of their schedule, it appears the offense is making the necessary adjustments.  They finished just under 500 yards in total offense against Maryland.  Penn State will will test them further with the nation's 10th ranked defense this weekend.

Just when defensive coordinators might have thought they were beginning to figure out ways to slow down Urban Meyer's offense, he has changed things up.  Staying a step ahead of the competition - as usual -
