Battling complacency

Complacency, the demon against the repeat. Urban knows it's affects and made sure his staff and players knew it also. But no matter how much you preach against it, that demon finds its way in. It thrives in the atmosphere of huge success over a long period. It whispers in the players ears things like, ‘we got this just take it easy’ and ‘no way we lose to them’. Focus starts to fade a little and then big upsets happen. I look back at last year before the Braxton injury and the talk was that we could challenge for the NC. Then the loss combining with the injury, we were forgotten. Who knew at that point the struggle would make us better to the point we were back in the conversation. Then the next injury and the immediate talk again was that we were out. Again we rose from the turmoil and won it all. Complacency had been banished again. This year there was a spring and summer full of well-deserved honor of our team’s accomplishment such as the ESPYs and the White House as well as covers of major magazines and ESPN shows. The general feeling around college football was that OSU repeats. Their odds were very large and they were the first team to ever start a season to gain every # 1 vote. We will never know if complacency didn't get a foot hold or not, even though our great coach preached it every day. We are struggling on offense no doubt but how do we know this might be a good thing in the long run because complacency has no chance to set in when you are fighting to get better. Although I never want or wish for injury, one must wonder if we would have won the NC without the first struggle and the team rising up around their inexperienced QB after the second injury. The coach was confident because of the team around him. Again the team needs to regain their focus and stop the mental errors and raise up around our QB.  Looking at history most great teams that have lost, do so on their last game to an inspired, less talented football team after they have dominated the season. This could be the result of complacency. So being positive in the face of our struggle, this too shall pass, and we will be a better team for it.
