B1G

College football is now out of the "Dead Period". Due to the Dead / Quiet Periods the last seven days only netted three commitments for the 14 teams in the B1G. With such a slow week I have a moment to give everybody an 11W style breakdown.

247 Composite Ratings* As Of 7-18-2015

NO. 13 INDIANA
NO. OF COMMITS AVG. COMP. AVERAGE
8 .822

Indiana's highest rated commitment is safety Khalil Bryant. Bryant is from Jacksonville Florida and has a .846 comp. rating. Six of Indiana's 8 commitments are on the offensive side of the ball. Kevin Wilson is known for his offense and it translates to recruiting.

Purdue has work to do.

Purdue has work to do.
NO. 13 PURDUE
NO. OF COMMITS AVG. COMP. AVERAGE
11 .822

The Boilermakers are in a familiar place in B1G football, last. To date, Darrell Hazell has recruited a balanced class (5 off. / 6 def.). His highest rated commitment is wide receiver Nate Johnson (.852) from Independence, Tennessee.

NO. 12 ILLINOIS
NO. OF COMMITS AVG. COMP. RATING
10 .827

The Fighting Illini's highest rated commitment is Illinois native Kentrail Moran (.889). Moran is a 5'10 192 pound running back from O'Fallon, Illinois. Tim Beckman is on the hot seat and so far he is recruiting hard on the offensive side of the ball. Seven of the ten commits are offensive players.

NO. 11 MARYLAND
NO. OF COMMITS AVG. COMP. RATING
16 .829

Randy Edsall has the Terrapins off to fast start with 16 commits. Although the team's comp. average is 11th best in the B1G, Maryland has a very good player with in-state quarterback Dwayne Haskins (.965). To date, Edsall has recruited 9 offensive and 7 defensive players.

Rutgers defeated That Team 26-24 in 2014.

In case you forgot, Rutgers defeated That Team 26-24 in 2014.
NO. 10 RUTGERS
NO. OF COMMITS AVG. COMP. RATING
16 .830

Kyle Flood should be using the Scarlet Knights' upset win over That Team to his advantage with the 2016 recruiting class. However, his highest ranked player, running back Trey Sneed, only has a a comp. rating of .868. You would think a win over a “prestigious” program like That Team would get you higher ranked players. I guess not.

Wide receiver appears to be an area of need as Edsall has accepted four commits at the position. Like the other teams struggling Edsall has more offensive commits (9) than defensive commits (7).

NO. 8 NORTHWESTERN
NO. OF COMMITS AVG. COMP. RATING
19 .833

The summer months heated up the Wildcats' on the recruiting trail. 14 of Northwestern's 19 verbals commited in June and July. Cornerback Roderick Cambell Jr. (.869) of Missouri is Pat Fitzgerald's highest rated commitment. Northwestern has a balanced class with 10 recruits on offense and 9 on defense.

NO. 8 IOWA
NO. OF COMMITS AVG. COMP. RATING
21 .833

Kirk Ferentz, the man that is forever associated with the B1G's Coach of the Year Award, must not have as much panache with recruits. Running back Barrington Wade (.870) is Iowa's highest rated commitment. The Hawkeyes' are one of the few teams with more defensive recruits (11) than offensive recruits (10).

Jerry Kill has the Gophers excited about football.

Jerry Kill has the Gophers excited about football.
NO. 7 MINNESOTA
NO. OF COMMITS AVG. COMP. RATING
11 .852

The Gophers' 2016 class is currently composed of six offensive and five defensive players. Jerry Kill (a guy I hope is as nice and “real” as I he comes across) has two players rated above .900. Minnesota's highest rated recruit is one-time Ohio State target OLB Carter Coughlin (.918) of Eden Prairie, MN.

B1G AVERAGE .856

NO. 6 NEBRASKA
NO. OF COMMITS AVG. COMP. RATING
14 .867

Mike Riley is entering his first season as Nebraska's head coach. His highest recruit is John Raridon. Raridon (.960) is an offensive guard from West Des Moines, Iowa. 8 of the Cornhuskers' 2016 recruits are offensive players. On Thursday Riley and the Cornhuskers picked up two more players for the 2016 class.

Paul Chryst is back at Wisconsin after a short stint in Pittsburgh.

Paul Chryst is back at Wisconsin after a short stint in Pittsburgh.
NO. 5 WISCONSIN
NO. OF COMMITS AVG. COMP. RATING
13 .873

The Badgers only have 13 commits, but the quality of the players have Wisconsin ranked fifth in the current B1G rankings. It shouldn't be a surprise that Paul Chryst's highest rated commit is a running back. Antonio Williams (.923) is a 5' 11” running back from New London, North Carolina.

NO. 4 THAT TEAM
NO. OF COMMITS AVG. COMP. RATING
21 .874

The One Who Wears Khakis has That Team's fan base in a tizzy. It appears he has shown his blue print for turning That Team around by getting commits from four offensive linemen with comp. ratings above .900. The khaki wearing one's top three verbals are offensive linemen and are led by offensive tackle Ben Bredeson (.983) of Hartland, Wisconsin.

Pay close attention to the players at the bottom of That Team's current commit list. It will be interesting to see if the bottom four players sign in February.

Don't sleep on Dantonio and Michigan State.

Don't sleep on Dantonio and Michigan State.
NO. 3 MICHIGAN STATE
NO. OF COMMITS AVG. COMP. RATING
20 .885

Mark Dantonio is turning Michigan State into the new power house from That State. Five of the 20 players in the Spartans' 2016 class have a comp. rating above .900. Josh King (.958) a SDE from Darien, Illinois is Dantonio's highest rated commit. Michigan State has a balanced class with 10 players on defense, 9 on offense and a kicker. It will be interesting to see which team finishes with the second best class in the B1G.

NO. 2 PENN STATE
NO. OF COMMITS AVG. COMP. RATING
16 .904

James Franklin made it clear that if a recruit is a 5' 9” tall lineman that he will not play at Penn State. Franklin is a man of his word because the smallest recruit on the line is Ellison Jordan who is a 6' 0” 270 pound defensive tackle.

Penn State's highest rated commit is offensive tackle Michal Menet (.981) who is the top-ranked recruit in Pennsylvania.

Ever wonder why Urban Meyer succeeds?

Ever wonder why Urban Meyer succeeds?
NO. 1 OHIO STATE
NO. OF COMMITS AVG. COMP. RATING
17 .926

Urban Meyer's 2016 class isn't just the best in the B1G, but it is arguably the best in the nation. 11 of the 17 players in the class have comp. ratings above .900. Running back Kareem Walker of Wayne, New Jersey leads the group with .983.

Meyer and company have room for a few more highly-ranked players and if/when they commit the Buckeyes class will continue to separate itself from the pack. The future is bright at Ohio State and the future is now.

*Kickers and punters are excluded in my team rankings.
