With MSU on the horizon, I've been reflecting on our play calling against good teams or teams that have played is hard.
Herman/Meyer seem to really button up tight...and then strangely get very stubborn...when the game is tight.
Some of this is natural, trying to protect a lead. But this offense isn't a grinder-type. We need to move the chains. Take what the D gives (usually horizontal space). We needlessly make these games tougher than need be (see VT, MSU). I wish they'd move the pocket or roll JT out on a run/pass option. Utilize the flats more with quick slants, bubble screens, RB in flats, etc.
Stubborn plays I hope we STOP seeing are (1) 3rd and short tempo run up the middle right into an overloaded D line. (2) slow developing play action passes that JT has to rush due to pressure and subsequently under throws.
What stubborn (or overly conservative) play calls do you wish we'd STOP seeing?
What kinds of play calls would you like TO SEE in these types of situations?
