So, how do you climb from the depths of being an unranked team in the preseason all the way to #3 after only five games. Well, let's ask Mississippi State how this amazing feat was accomplished.
Step 1 - Defeat a Top 10 team. This was accomplished in Week 4, when Mississippi State defeated "#8" LSU. LSU is currently unranked, with a signature win over a Wisconsin team who just lost to Northwestern.
Step 2 - Shoot up the polls. Mississippi State went from unranked to #14 after their win over LSU.
Step 3 - Beat another Top 10 team. Enter Texas A&M, who saw a huge climb in the polls, from #21 to #9 after their win over "#9" South Carolina, to be sitting at #8 going into last week's game. Mississippi State pulls off the win, and BOOM! #3 in the country.
So, to recap, from Week 4 to Week 7, Mississippi State has gone from unranked to #3 in the country with a single win over a team currently ranked in the Top 15.
How does Baylor sit at #5 in the country having not played a single opponent with a winning record, and with five wins over opponents whose record is a combined 8 - 18, while Georgia Tech sits at 5-0 and at least has a win over a Power 5 school with a winning record (Virginia Tech), and is ranked #22????
Michigan State also sits at #8 with a record of 4-1, with a loss to 4-1 Oregon, who checks in at #12.
I take great pleasure in knowing that these polls have ZERO influence on the selection committee.
