I'll preface this post with an acknowledgement that the opposition in recent weeks has been less than stellar, defensively, but that didn't seem to matter much for FSU's QB last year.
As of this past Saturday, the World-Wide Leader listed 5 QBs among their 9 candidates in the 2014 Heisman Watch. Their current statistics are below, along with a certain RS Freshman's and another that we, as Buckeye fans, hold sacred.
Marcus Mariota (Oregon) - 5 games
91/128 (71.1%), 1411 yards, 15 TDs, 0 INTs
215 yards rushing, 3 TDs
Kenny Hill (Texas A&M) - 6 games
155/242 (64.1%), 2110 yards, 21 TDs, 5 INTs
171 yards rushing, 0 TDs
Everett Golson (Notre Dame) - 5 games
114/178 (64%), 1383 yards, 13 TDs, 3 INTs
138 yards rushing, 4 TDs
Taysom Hill (BYU) - 5 games
88/132 (66.7%), 975 yards, 7 TDs, 3 INTs
463 yards rushing, 8 TDs
Dak Prescott (Miss. St.) - 5 games
78/122 (63.9%), 1232 yards, 13 TDs, 2 INTs
455 yards rushing, 6 TDs
J.T. Barrett (OSU) - 5 games
88/133 (66.2%), 1354 yards, 17 TDs, 5 INTs
276 yards rushing, 2 TDs
Troy Smith (OSU) - first 5 games of 2006
84/128 (65.6%), 1070 yards, 12 TDs, 2 INTs
24 yards rushing, 0 TDs
It goes without saying that Troy's 2006 team had faced much tougher competition in 2006 than the 2014 team has seen under Barrett's lead, and were victorious in all 5. However, I thought it was worth pointing out that he's on pace to do significant damage to the OSU record books, beginning right now.
For those arguing that the starting job should be handed to Miller next year simply because he is a returning, top Heisman candidate, I think it's reasonable to say that Barrett might be one as well. Take it as you want, just wanted to throw some stats out there as we see him dive into B1G play with a full head of steam...
