VT Defense

For some reason I got a bad feeling about this game. I remember watching them play last year and recalled how they seemed to dominate Bama's Offense. And in fact they did, went to look at the box score. Bama had 206 total yards, lowest output of the year. If not for 2 special team TD's and also a pick 6 game would have been much closer.

And this was against a vet QB. Gonna be close game.

I'm worried about VT's defense, too. Foster is a great coach and VT has good personnel. Keep in mind, though, that VT has only five returning starters back from last season's veteran-laden defense.

Also, I don't see the Buckeyes young, inexperienced OL and QB marching up and down the field on VT; however, even when VT had that veteran defense last season, some teams found ways to manufacture points against them via turnovers and field position. Against VT in 2013, BC scored 34 pts and Maryland scored 27 pts, respectively. And then UCLA lit them up in their bowl game for 42 pts and over 450 yards.

The achilles heel for VT's D last year.. was the VT offense. VT gave up a couple of big runs against BC last year, but in the games you mentioned turnovers by the offense killed the D.

This years defense should be good, how good.. its probably too early to tell. The DBs are legit, all 4 returning starters.. The LBs aren't that big.. one is a 5th year senior, 1st year starting.. the other kid (Clarke) is also in his first year starting. Maddy returns at DT. Corey Marshall returns, he along with Dadi Nicolas have seen significant playing time. Nicolas' time previously was more as a pass rush specialist type role... this year obviously he's out there full time. Ken Ekanem is the other end.. more prototypical size for an end.

Another guy who could have a big role is Ronny VanDyke at the whip spot... he was slated to start last year but an injury in the preseason kept him out all year. He's back and played sparingly against W&M.. not sure what his status is for OSU.

Great comment - thanks for the input.

We know that VT's defense is going to be really good and cause problems for our inexperienced offense. I guess we're hoping that this edition of Bud Foster's troops is more like 2011 (FEI rated #31 defense) or 2012 (FEI rated #24 defense) than last season's super nasty group (FEI rated #4).

Btw, I am looking forward to visiting Blacksburg for the first time next season. I've been to Charlottesville and it's a really beautiful, charming part of the country with a lot of history, culture, etc. Us Buckeye fans/alumni very much respect VT's football program and the university. Best of luck on your season - after this Saturday, of course.

Didn't they lose Kyle Fuller to the NFL? He was a starter correct? Or did you just replace him with another Fuller and count them as the same :)

Pretty much - Kendall Fuller played significant minutes as a true freshman in the secondary next to his brother last year.

In fact, Kendall is the 4th of the Fuller brothers to play at VT. Oldest brother Vincent was a standout safety who played in the NFL for six years with the Titans, Corey Fuller is a WR who currently plays for the Lions, and Kyle was just drafted in the 1st round by the Bears.

It's a shame that Kendall is the last one to come through Blacksburg because they sure have been excellent players for us.

Yea Kyle missed several games last year due to injury... in those games Kendall and Brandon Facyson started at the CB spots. Kyle also played the whip spot in certain games/situations - against GT for example.

Radford I hope you keep posting through the season. You can be the voice of the ACC. You definitely seem to have a level head and bring a lot of info to guys who don't know much about Va Tech.

As far as your defense goes, I can't recall a time when it wasn't stout. Kendall Fuller is the real deal and I'm sure you will have a solid front 7. Outside of MSU, I suspect this will be the most difficult defense we see this year. If we can crack 30, I'd call that a win for the offense in and of itself. I'm just hoping we keep up the momentum from the second half vs. Navy and hopefully these guys will be pissed about the rankings drop and let that fuel them. At any rate, it's gonna be a slugfest.

Thanks. I think with Braxton Miller being out... our chances for pulling out a W definitely went up. Still though, I think we'll have to play a nearly perfect game to make that happen. The key for VT probably comes down to how our OL holds up against OSUs front 4... likewise, it'll be interesting to see what VT can do with Barrett and the OSU OL.

The question marks on D for VT are definitely the LBs... and overall depth, especially in the front 7. That's one thing about Bud Foster though.. he gets every last bit of athletic ability out of his defenses and typically he's able to plug people in year in and year out and have one of the better defenses in the nation. This year the depth, especially in the front 7 is young.. so hopefully for VT the offense is able to sustain some drives so those 2nd team D guys aren't seeing too many snaps.

Anything can happen...but not in that type of environment.. Not with our coaches, and not with the talent we have..you won't convince me other wise..

It is possible, they've been hanging their hats on stellar defense for longer than this website has existed. Offensive line is going to have to play a lot better, we'll have to cut down on the miscues on offense (drops, turnovers, awful playcalls) and do a better job than we have in the past at getting our playmakers into 1 v 1 in the open field.

I'm very worried as well. I feel like they may be very underrated right now due to the recent perception of their program..and also because they played an FCS opponent last week.

There is a reason we are a double digit favorite going into this game. If V-Tech would have dis-mantled W & M - I would be nervous nellie but they are very beatable especially when they play us at night on the road.

They are also claiming they were "Vanilla" on both sides of the ball against W&M too. But they brought a lot of blitz packages. I'm confident that our speed will reign supreme. If they blitz and Wilson/ Marshall/ Samuel breaks contain on it, it could very easily spring a big one. From what I've read it sounds like they will load the box to put pressure on Barrett and the O-line and trust their corners in press man coverage. But there were multiple occasions where W&M receivers beat their corners. I'll take our receivers over W&M any day.

Yeah, based on comments from the coordinators, they both mentioned that they didn't play all their cards.

Here's the thing about VT's defense - because Bud likes to take chances, the opportunity for big plays are always an option. Also, mobile quarterbacks who can escape pressure on busted plays eat VT alive. I expect the same as you though, VT will send lots of guys but Foster is very good at disguising who's coming. As far as our corners go, they may have been beaten by receivers but their strength is the ability to recover quickly. Both Fuller & Facyson have great ball skills, so even if they're beaten on a route they'll often find a way to make a play.

I know it's horribly cliche, but this game will be won in the trenches. VT can pull off the upset if our O-Line can give our playmakers space to operate and our D-line can keep up the pressure for 4 quarters. Expect the Hokies to come out aggressive on D to test a young QB.

Good luck on Saturday!

I agree - I feel like the key to the game is the match up between VT's offense v. Ohio State's defense. Yes, VT's defense does pose problems for Ohio State's young and inexperienced offense. We anticipate that our play makers will get loose a few times, but it will be tough to move the ball on Foster's defense. I expect that Meyer and Herman will try to find creative ways of keeping JT Barrett and the Buckeyes' OL out of third and longs - QB draws on early downs, some new gadget run plays, mixed in with some power runs. If they have to punt the football, so be it - Ohio State does have a really good punter and coverage teams.

So, Ohio State will have to rely on its talented but somewhat rebuilt defense to put VT in bad situations. We're hoping that the crazy night atmosphere will make it difficult for VT's offense to communicate and maybe get a few of VT's frosh/sophomores on offense to lose track of their assignments and "check offs," etc.

I'd be very worried about this game on a neutral field, but I also feel like you can't really tell how VT's frosh and sophomores will handle the noise and atmosphere until they're in it. We've seen teams manage the atmosphere just fine - maybe even feed off of it - but other teams got discombobulated. We'll find out how VT handles it Saturday night.

I am also worried about their D, they are very good.

But, UCLA torched them in the Sun Bowl for 450 yards and 42 points. Since then they're lost a first-round draft pick CB and 5 other starters.

Good but not unbeatable. I have faith in our offensive coaches to get a good plan in place. If the OL comes in and gets in a groove early, it could be a long night for VT.

Our D-line will have a lot of influence, William and Mary have kids that would be three deep here. Their O-line will be under pressure from the atmosphere of a night game in the shoe and 1st round talent.  Me thinks Darron Lee may visit Mr. Brewer once or twice in the backfield also. I suspect Fickell and Ash will try to use his speed/athleticism like Shazier to harass QB's.  This could be a really good one!!!

The defense is good, so is ours (from what I have been reading) Either way, it will be a great game and I am pumped.

I don't really care about what I read about the defense until we see them do it on the field. I think the D-Line is going to be downright nasty but the back 7 is still a huge ? IMO

dubjayfootball90's picture

Oh yea, i agree. Even though we played a game, it is still up in the air for the back 7. But the fact that we actually have an aggressive style, where there won't be as much 35 yd cushions on the receivers, that is already an upgrade from last year. I still think our secondary, from watching their limited play against Navy, performed well, but again, VERY SMALL sample size, but you are correct. Have to wait and see, but I think we will be pleasantly surprised.

If VT wins it'll be a huge knock on our coaches. Elite football coaches dont let unranked teams beat a #8 team in the country on their own turf at primetime. We have Urban. He is elite. He won't let that happen.
