Okay so you may think I'm crazy. I might be. Or maybe I just have a little too much time on my hands since I took a vacation this week and am going to cap it off with a trip to the Horseshoe on Saturday. But I did a little digging and it wasn't for no reason. When I watched this team last Saturday, I couldn't help but think back to 2002. Yeah I was only 10 years old then but me and my dad watched those games religiously. This team is similar in quite a few ways. I really saw them come together on Saturday. I saw an identity that I haven't seen for quite awhile. They had a chip on their shoulder and it was almost a blue-collar type of vibe. These boys are hungry. Check out some of these similarities to the 2002 team.

In 2002, we were coming off of a bowl loss to a team from South Carolina, played in Florida. We just came off a bowl loss to a team from South Carolina, played in Florida.

In 2002, we were coming off a tight win in Ann Arbor. This year we came off a tight win in Ann Arbor.

In 2002, our best defensive player Mike Doss decided to come back instead of heading to the draft. Our best defensive player Mike Bennett decided to come back instead of going to the draft.

In 2002, our best target at wide receiver was Mike Jenkins. Our best target at wide receiver is Mike Thomas.

Going into our 2nd game in 2002, we were ranked #8 in the AP poll, one spot behind Michigan. Going into our 2nd game this season, we are ranked #8 in the AP poll, one spot behind Michigan State.

Jim Tressel won the title in his 2nd bowl eligible season as head coach. This is Urban Meyer's 2nd bowl eligible season as head coach.

Craig Krenzel wore #16 and was seen first and foremost as a leader. J.T. Barrett is #16 and seen first and foremost as our leader.

Lastly, a team from Florida was trying to repeat as National Champions after a title win in Pasadena the previous year. A team from Florida is trying to repeat as National Champions this year after a win in Pasadena last year.

I might be a little bored and this may have 0 bearing on anything but I did find it interesting. I mean... what are the odds

I've seen this comparison before. While you can't deny the similarities, you also have to let Team 2014 be just that.

Mike Thomas is our top receiver? Hes 2nd on the depth behind Spencer I believe (now I do agree that he has the potential to be a top receiver...but hasn't yet)

Mike Thomas should be our go to guy. At least eventually. I went out on a limb a bit on that one. He could be a star though. I'm not taking away from "Team 2014" at all.. this team could be the deepest and most talented team we've ever had. I will enjoy the entirety of this year and like I said.. those coincidences may have 0 bearing on anything lol

There are only a few flaws in your thinking:

1) Krenzel was a winner (same way, some how) but I'll take the talent of JT Barrett any day

2) There isn't a Dustin Fox in the secondary this year

3) Look at the offensive coordinator in 2002, and in 2014....big difference!

Seriously though....even without Braxton this year, I have this gut feeling that this year will be special in it's own regard.  Those were some pretty interesting comparisons though!

Hate is a strong word.  I hate ESecPN almost as much as I hate the whole SEC conference which is a close second to TTUN.

1. Krenzel was a leader though!

2. Dustin Fox < Vonn Bell

3. I said "similar" not exactly the same lol

Few flaws in your thinking. You under estimate Krenzel, Dustin Fox was not THAT good (I think he lead the BIG in pass interference) and you over estimate Herman.

No Dustin Fox in the secondary is a good, no GREAT thing!!! I should have explained that better.  10 yard cushion then draw a pass interference while being one of the leading tacklers....no thanks!!  I'll take Grant/Apple/Conley over Fox any day!

I'm all in on this comparison - I think there are a lot of things to like about this team, and I think they've been discounted by just about everyone. Here's the only problem I have with your analogy:

In 2002, our best defensive player Mike Doss decided to come back instead of heading to the draft. Our best defensive player Mike Bennett decided to come back instead of going to the draft.

Our best defensive player actually decided to go in the draft, and he's wearing #50 for the Pittsburgh Steelers. No skin off Mr. Bennett's teeth, of course.

yeah and so far he looks like a freaking perennial pro bowler.....an interesting conundrum for the browns fans on this board.......I myself am a Bills fan and am very much looking forward to watching Shazier take Jonny Dbag's head off

I like the enthusiasm but I don't see any sort of comparison to '02.

Such a young team with so many promising future super stars, I can certainly see some of the similarities.

Also a talented recruiting class coming in and pushing the veterans

This team is going to get better and better as the year moves forward. Both sides of the ball has the talent and competition to be a monster. Staying undefeated through five games is the key because after that we will be very difficult to deal with, even for MSU.

I see plenty of similarities and I applaud you for coming up with these ones. I hope the end result will equate into what the 2002 team accomplished! Go Bucks

I got in at number 12 on the yearly "This is just like '02" thread!  Whoever got in at number 7 is sure to have good luck the rest of the year!

That 2002 had several OL that played professional ball. Do not see that here and will be the biggest factor limiting this team, especially with a RS Frosh QB

There are a lot of similarities and even things this years team has that 02 didn't like more weapons at the skill positions.....however, Barrett has a long way to go to get to Krentzel level of staying calm in tough situations and general overall leadership and 2, someone mentioned, the Oline is not as good this year as the 02, I do think they will get better but probably not as good as 02 until next year
