Why do Ohio State letter jackets have yellow sleeves?

I went to Ohio State out of Columbus Walnut Ridge HS back in the mid 70's. Both school's colors were scarlet and gray. My high school had a great looking letterman's jackets. Scarlet with gray sleeves and some stripes thrown in. Ohio State to me had jackets that were just hard to look at so does anyone know what's up with the off yellow sleeves?

I don't think that those sleeves really qualify as yellow.

More of a cream color than yellow I think. It may just be the traditional look of our letterman jackets. You know, before Nike was designing everything.

Nike did the letterman jackets for the coaching staff the past two years.

They do not handle the OSU varsity letterman jackets.

They are leather sleeves. I like them and wish I had earned one during my time on campus. I think they are pretty classic letter jackets.

it is a cream color.

It's cream due to tradition.  Way back in the day, the leather was tanned with a compound leaving it with a wet-white color.  This compound was popular as it left the leather most resisitent to wear.  This was a random topic of conversation when my Grandfather (works with leather as a hobby) broke out his old letterman jacket from the 40's and compared it the autographed EG one he gave me as a Xmas gift.

Tradition is good.  Even though I love all my Nike OSU gear, I like this tradition and hope it is never changed!
