PHONE'S RINGING -- IT'S URBAN ON THE LINE
Step right up and guess our ranking!!!
Winner gets a high five and an up-vote!
Probably top 10 rushing and top 40 passing? Total in the 25-30 range?
"You're pissed because we went after a committed guy? Guess what, we got nine guys who better go do it again. Do it a little harder next time." -- Urban Frank Meyer -- I LOVE THIS DUDE!! :)
total defense 46
No winners yet... Keep trying.
Looked it up, surprised in total defense and passing yards allowed.
I can't guess because I looked this up yesterday, but if this was The Price is Right, everyone would be overbid!
DING DING DING!!!!
We have a winner!!
Tell him what he's won, Johnny.
Yep. This kills me though... #79 in passing yards allowed. REALLY glad we are good against the run, but dayum.
The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender. - Woody Hayes
Battles are sometimes won by generals; wars are nearly always won by sergeants and privates. Football is no different, the guys down in the trenches win the games, not the coach.
OSU_ALUM_05 has won.
Thank you for playing.
According to cfbstats.com, Ohio State ranks 15th nationally in Total Defense which I believe is calculated by using yards per game given up.
They are 7th Nationally in Rush Defense.
They are tied for 79th(!!) in Pass Defense.
Interesting note: there are 5 Big Ten teams in the top 15 nationally in Total Defense and only 3 SEC teams.
So let's all hope that Defense still wins championships.
Can we hope that rushing defense still wins championships? ;)
I really just wanted people to realize that the Defense has not been as bad as some may think.
Yes, the passing defense is pretty atrocious and that could hurt them down the road. But to be in the top 15 nationally after 7 games is still pretty decent.
If we can make some improvements in the passing defense, we will be golden.
Good post. I think you are right in thinking we need to adjust our attitudes about the defense.
Also to keep in mind our passing ranking, while we legitimately havent looked great, has also been impacted by facing very pass specialized teams like Cal, Northwestern. And even run centered teams have been forced to respect our run D I think they have forced themselves to throw against us more than they normally would even from the very start of the game. All these factors probably make us look a little worse at the pass D than we maybe are.
Plus other than Roby, we are testing a lot of new players in the secondary. I trust Meyer and the coaches to get these guys up to speed as these last few legs of season play out.
I like this one even better. Ha!
Ain't no run defense stopping that
I wasn't born a Buckeye but I became one as fast as I could.
got to love the chiefs D -- i picked them up early this year in my fantasy football league!
stats are like whores. with a little massaging, you can make them show you whatever ya want.
fact is, if we dont get A LOT better between the Michigan game and the bowl game, we're gonna give up yards like Clemson did Saturday night.
I agree. But I think we can get better.
I was surprised to see that there wasn't an improvement this week after our bye week, but you have to also remember that Iowa had a bye week as well. They had a pretty good game plan and executed it very well.
Ohio State came out in the second half and made some adjustments and Iowa scored only 7 points after that. Take away the big play to the tight end, and they held Iowa to 68 yards offensively in the second half.
Everyone wants to bash the coaching staff for this defense but I believe they are making some excellent adjustments mid-game.
63rd. Thinking we're smack dab in the middle. Not a ton of really dominating defenses.
EDIT: D'oh! I should probably stop guessing once the answer's been given.
I'll negate the unnecessary down-vote.
Was downvoting every wrong answer really necessary?
Serial Down-Voter is trying to frame me.
Obviously we don't know who it was but I'm gonna roll through here like Carlos Hyde and upvote everyone in the thread.
Good job, seabass!
I lol'd. Was thinking the same thing.
See...I think some overreact to what we're seeing on the field from this defense. I get rather annoyed with the passing yards allowed, too, but this defense has been good against the run, which is a great foundation to have. I think all these "Coaching change" "OMG our defense is so terrible" "X, Y, and Z team would kill our defense" things are excessive. This may not be a defense that we were used to in the Tressel era, but it's not hot garbage that some of the trendy offenses out there (who probably haven't faced any defense worth a shit yet) would gash for 40+ points.
I just hope that the defense works on getting better against the pass. Also, they need to stop trying to go for the big hit so much. Roby's ejection was BS, but that's the way the game is going these days. Going for big hits are just going to lead to ejections, flags, or missed tackles. They got away with not having Roby against Iowa, but I worry about how that ejection could impact the defense against a strong opponent.
Class of 2010.
That was the whole point of this thread.
I wanted people to realize that this defense isn't last in the country. They need to improve against the pass and hopefully that will happen.
I tried making a thread like this and only got a like ten comments.
Well I will give you an up-vote for your troubles.
Follow up - and more importantly what are we in scoring defense?
We are 22nd in scoring defense - 19.9 ppg
Not too bad either.
So we fire Fickell.....
damn my torch went out ill catch up.
Toledo - Ohio's right armpit

We also must consider the offenses we have faced (helps to positively skew our stats), but yes, our defense isn't below average by any means. Problem is, we expect well above average, and that's tough to see with what Cal, Wisc, NW, and Iowa have done through the air against us. Run defense is undoubtedly top tier.
Isn't that funny how's that working out. We were worried coming into the year about the youth of the front seven, yet they have stepped up nicely and gotten the job done. And we were confident in the secondary with the returning experience, yet they have been the weak link thus far. Odd.
What's lost in the translation is that the passing numbers against the d, aside from the cal game, were skewed by a couple big plays each game. And once the opponents are pushed into having to throw, the d is doing a great job of putting the clamps on and closing it out. Its just early in the game the pass d struggles. At least that's what I'm seeing. The offense isnt doing the d any favors either by being some damn quick, efficient and awesome.
Cheating? Who got free tattoos?
Lol, nice tongue-in-cheek comment. I guess I'm too new to upvote this comment.
Let's look at how are D has handled some of the teams on their schedule and then how other teams have handled the same team.
Cal scored 34 points on our D. The only team on Cal's schedule they have scored more points on is Portland State. Oregon, Oregon State, and UCLA held them under 20. Washington State allowed 22 and Northwestern 30.
Northwestern hung 30 on our D. Wisconsin held them to 6 and powerhouse Minnesota held them to 17 points.
Also, the scoring D numbers and passing/rushing numbers figure in Florida A&M and San Diego State. You have to count those games too and everyone has shitty teams like that, but they were horrible teams. Buffalo moved the ball easily really. Wisconsin's average QB put up some great numbers too. I know their running game stifled, but still he looked like Drew Brees against them.
yeah when doing that you have too look at how Cals Qb was hurt. Also how Northwestern lost a Qb and there best offensive weapon. Wisconsin has lit up alot of teams.
Since many fans are very disappointed about the defense, I guess that the ranking was much higher than what most people expected. How about the lucky #13?
Who cares about rankings?!?! If you win, you win. We can go all day comparing our opponents against others, and look at every piece of evidence. The important thing is our defense hold the opponent to less points than our offense scores. This is a complete machine, not two separate parts. Who cares about margin of victory, etc... we won on Saturday and we have won the past 19... no one else in the country can say that, even if they have better ranking offense or defense. Do you think I care that Georgia, LSU, or Clemson might have a better ranked defense or offense than us... NO... and it doesn't matter because they all lost and OSU didn't, that's what is important.
I think you missed the point here, sir.
No... I got the point Mr. Jeremy. I was just giving my 2 cents on how much we really don't need to worry about the rankings.
I just wish every player would prepare for each game like kenny g. They never know when they might get called on. Some of and I mean a few looked unprepared when the unexpected happened. It goes a long way how our defense looks as a whole.
