We will have to hope the computers help us out a bit, but it seems annoyingly evident now that we'll absolutely need an Alabama, Oregon and/or FSU loss to have a chance at The Crystal this year. Even after our (best of the year, in primetime) performance last night, the polls shook out as follows today:
AP: We gained 6 pts (from 1309 to 1315), but this presumably came from the Mizzou loss, as the top 3 teams netted the exact same amount of points as Week 9 (4,317, with a few points shifting from FSU to Oregon).
The AP poll doesn't count in the BCS formula, however, the Coaches does (and the Harris tends to mirror the Coaches more so than the AP). The top 3 went from 4,436 to 4,444 this week (gaining 8 points) and the Buckeyes dropped 7 pts from 1,382 to 1,375.
The BCS formula does not care what position a team is ranked, it only considers the number of points (votes) a team earns. While I suspect we will get a small bump in the computers this week (and most weeks going forward), if we could not gain on those in front of us after our historical performance last night, it seems evident that even winning with "style" points for the rest of the year, and concluding with a convincing win over (an 11-1 best case scenario) Sparty in the B1G CG, our title game hopes seems to be COMPLETELY dependent on those teams above us...
