A lot of people look at the numbers certain teams have put up against us this year and use it to say that Roby isnt quite what he is cracked up to be. Lets all be honest this page has a lot of negativity for Fickell(guy is a Co-cordinator), roby, and all things defense. I'll stay on track now and talk about what Ive personally seen out of Roby. To preface this better ill admit that I am in awe at what a corner at this level is able, and expected to do. It is the most technically challenging spot to play in this game.
Wisconsin put up stupid huge numbers(okay that kid with the 37 syllable name put up huge numbers) in the passing game. Roby was beat on double moves, was dogged on message boards in all kinds of ways, and doesnt get proper credit for what he did right. I'll also admit he got very lucky on a lot of "no calls" for tugging on jersey. He did wrap up 6 solo tackles. We were playing what ESPN called the best rushing attack in the nation and "Flash' Gordon. He made HUGE stops in spots where it was make the tackle or this back is going to bust a huge run. He also had 8 tackles all together and a huge INT. This INT was no doubt because of the pressure on Stave, but he did his j-o-b and picked it off. This was a crushing play for wisconsin and put the game back in our hands(literally).
Nothwestern came in averaging some stupid number of rushing yards above 250 and here we were faced with a very good balanced attack. NW has figured a deadly balance of pass and run with two good QB's and a GREAT running back. Marknado anyone? He was held in check by admittedly our entire roster, but once again Roby had a good number of tackles for a CB at 5 solo, and 6 total. Also I seem to remember a HUGE block that kept our team in the game when we were reeling. The play was caused on the line(Shazier busted it wide open if I do recall). He did what he was supposed to do and blocked it.
Two huge games against top flight teams that were undefeated at the time(yes Wisconsin was undefeated I dont care what their record said). What did Roby do? He sure as hell found a way to bend but not break. He made a single big play in both games, and coupled it with selfless play. CB's are not known to by enforcers tackling any and all runners that come at them. Carlos Hyde laughs at the thought of a corner trying to stop him just to throw that out there. But Roby rushes in head first(sometimes it does backfire) and looks to make plays. That to me says he is a complete football player, maybe not a complete corner. But he is ready to play football, and that means a lot to me as a fan that lives and dies with this team.
To throw out some comparison stats to a former STAR sec player we all know
Tyrann Mathieu had 60 solo tackles, 77 total tackles, and 2 INT's through his junior year at LSU along with 4 TD's
Roby has 21 solo, 27 total, 2 int's, and one TD through 5 games this season....to push averages for the year(estimated) its 54.6 solo, 70.2 total, and i wont touch INT's because they are so tricky but we have to imagine with some bad QB's on the Schedule(iml ooking at TTUN)
I understand I picked one guy and compared him, but that one guy was also a heisman finalist so i think this is fair.
This was my first real straight football oriented post and I hope you all take the time to give feedback, and enjoy it!
