With Rutgers and Maryland both playing pretty well so far this season, it has me thinking: Will these teams actually improve the current state of the B1G? They certainly weren't the big name programs most of us were hoping for during expansion. But I think they may actually be in or near the top half of the conference next year. Let's take a look at what I expect will be the bottom half of the conference:
Penn State - Hackenberg is a nice piece but this team will be hurting for a few years.
Illinois - Will probably be in bigger trouble with Scheelhaase graduating.
Minnesota - 4-0 so far this year but be real...they suck.
Iowa - May actually be better next year but some position hating god will strike them down.
Indiana - Will continue being Indiana.
Purdue - 1-3 against decent competition but will probably lose to NIU this week. I don't know how they would end up better next year.
I think there is a fair chance that Maryland and/or Rutgers will be a better team next year than any of the above teams. This would slot them in at the #7 and #8 teams in the conference.
