With the news coming out of Texas recently, it got me thinking back to what the original plan was in Austin. That plan was Will Muschamp, who was the defensive coordinator at the time, was the coach-in-waiting. Of course, that plan blew up when Muschamp went to Florida for the 2011 season.
Looking back on it, it looks like a dumb idea. The program in Texas has gone in a tailspin. Rival schools in the region have capitalized. Similar thing happened at Florida State with the passing of the torch from Bobby Bowden to Jimbo Fisher. It was a messy transition that left a legendary coach bitter at the school.
I have wondered if a similar plan was going to be put in motion by Jim Tressel when he wanted to move on from here. Of course, that never happened due to the issues that emerged.
After seeing the problems with the coach-in-waiting experiments at Texas and Florida State, I do not think we will see this experiment again except when a coach were to announce in the middle of the year that it was going to be his last season and they were naming a replacement right then.
