PHONE'S RINGING -- IT'S URBAN ON THE LINE
Saw this over on the Ozone forum while lurking, Gerd responded and didn't debunk it. Have I missed something? Anyone got any news?
Not sure, but all I have heard from practice reports is how impressive he has been. If they decide not to move Hall over to RB full time and with Hyde and Smith out, it is probably between him and Dunn as Eze gets the system down. Wouldn't be as shocking as it once seemed.
In some other threads people claim Jordan Hall will start against Buffalo. Not sure where Elliot figures in. Maybe Hall,Ball,Dunn then Elliot. We get a big lead early it could all Ball,Dunn and Elliot. You would think Hall would be done @ halftime. Hopefully we can get our young guys playing time.
MICHIGAN STILL SUCKS
I am not a Buckeye player hater but please no Hall. We've had an incomplete 4 years to see what he can do. Keep him in the slot or whatever receiving role they have for him. I want to get some starting time experience for some of these other young cats. I don't care who it is, Ball, Dunn or Eze E. I am curious about Ball and Eze E's abilities and want to see if Dunn has learned the playbook better. Saw too many missed blocks and trying to take handoffs from the wrong side of the QB last year from him.
We've actually seen very little of Hall in a full time role, but when he did get the chance to start last year he was fairly productive rushing for 192 yards on 34 carries in 2 games. I have no doubt that he can produce given the chance.
He hasn't been given a chance? He's had chance after chance, can't stay healthy. Not the coaching staffs fault he can't consistently stay on the field.
Not really sure it was "his fault" that he couldn't stay healthy either...stepping on Glass picking up dog crap falls under the "freak accident" category in my opinion. You kind of make it sound like he was kick boxing with his friends and messed himself up...The other season ending injury was a torn ligament during a game..again, not really "his fault".
Just because he's not who YOU want playing doesn't mean he's not the best and certainly most experienced guy we have right now (that's not suspended for something that was "his fault"). Trust the staff brother.
Well lets see he's a 5th year senior who has never stayed healthy and when healthy hasn't done anything earth shattering for me to put him ahead of hyde, smith, elliot and wilson. also we are short on scholarships. and to top it off he runs a 4.6. ANDYB he was part of Tattoo gate was he not? Missing 2011 was his fault nobody elses. He's had his scholarship for 4 years. His 2 touchdown runs the holes were huuuuuge Zach Boren could have scored on those.
From what I've heard Urban say time and time again..."the best player will play" If he's the best guy available...why wouldn't you want him out there?
To Clarify, I'm pretty excited to see the new guys too...but I still would want the best guy available taking the majority of snaps...if it happens to be Hall then so be it!
The anticipation is always just to see who the #1 guy is, because that is the sure fire way of knowing that he is the best guy, as far as Urban & Co. are concerned. When you're coming into preseason, we have heard numerous different "he is a starter" or "he is #1 on the depth chart".
First Rod Smith would be starting with Hyde now. Then Hall with Smith being out a game. Now it is maybe Ball, according to some sources.
At WR, Hall is the starting Pivot when all players are available. Then Wilson "is a starter". Fields was a starter in the Spring, now Spencer is a starter.
What it all boils down to is we are all overly eager for that first game to get here, and we all just want to see who won the coaches over, FOR REAL, the last how ever many months.
it will be smith and hyde, hall will be on the bench.
Not according to Meyer. Me thinks he has the final say in that.
"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.
He's a big dude. Would be happy to see him get the ball.
Oh S#it - said every defensive back on the Buckeye schedule.
An angry fan...rooting for an angry team...led by angry coaches
He doesn't even really need shoulder pads
The postgame show is brought to you by... Christ, I can't find it. The hell with it...
Def a big dude, especially after a spring with Mic:
I'd be happy to see him with the ball as well (have heard all great things about him), just curious where the "he might be the starter" stuff is coming from.
He seems to like the short shorts.
I know you are being facetious but he is just displaying his muscularity. Fear not, I bet they are knee level again once he left the photo shoot.
All the great ones do.
I know there's a game saturday, and my ass will be there.
Where do you guys find these before and after pics?
I keep hearing about how awesome he is, I hope he gets some snaps.
Hope he gets a shot. Would love to see how he handles the pressure.
How Firm Thy Friendship....
You could put Wells on the back of that jersey and no one could tell the difference between the two. Didn't realize he was that big; hope to see him get some quality carries in the first couple games.
He's shorter than Beanie by a couple of inches I would say. Short and compact with a low center of gravity.
Found out that it came from Scout insider. We will see what happens in 7 days, O-H...
The other thing is "starters" in football is a much more vague term than baseball or basketball. Who is on the field to start the game primarily depends on what your personnel package is at the time. We could start the first series with Hall in the H position with a TE, 2 WRs, and Ball in the backfield. Does that make Ball the starter, I guess, but if we go 3 WRs and a TE then having Hall on the field as H/RB would put Ball on the bench instead.... Starter doesn't always mean as much in certain positions on the football field.
Speaking of which, take your shot at predicting the first 11 on the field for the O and D!!
He will see plenty of action while Hyde is out, no doubt...hope his practice play translates to onfield production
We'll see all the un-suspended backs to one degree or another. I'm sure the coaches, like us, want to see what they all can do "in the arena". I'm very excited to see Warren Ball and Zeke.
I agree, not that I like suspensions or what precipitated them, but it might end up being helpful to get more reps for young guys early to test our depth.
Plenty of fresh horses in the stable. When the opposing D gets tired there will always be fresh legs to bring in. Having abundance at RB is a blessing.
“I have yet to be in a game where luck was involved. Well-prepared players make plays. I have yet to be in a game where the most prepared team didn't win.” -Urban Meyer-
I've always preferred Ball over Dunn.
Boy,Charlie Cheeseburger kind of let his hair grow out
A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men
The beauty of the Buffalo game will be being able to see a lot of reps with the youngers guys, and guys a hair lower on the depth charts.
Depths charts heading into the game will be interesting until noon on the 31st, and then the interest will turn to who takes the majority of the snaps and who utilizes those snaps most efficiently.
I said that I thought Ball would wind up being the guy from that class who surprises everyone. Dunn is damn good, don't get me wrong, but people were so excited about our head to head recruiting win against UM that Ball got forgotten.
I'm not putting much stock into the decision on who the starting RB is on Saturday. I think we will see more of a running back by committee approach.
How about Hall, Dunn, And Ball in the Diamond formation maybe throw Wilson in there. Probably wont see that much in non conference play though.
I would not be surprised if this was the case at all. Have always felt he was very underrated among the fan base.
I've been thinking this might be Ball's big chance, can't wait to see him run. Dunn did so well as a pass receiver in the Spring game, I wonder if (ironically) he might get fewer carries as a result?
Ball's a Columbus kid so I'm rooting for him for that alone. Also, seems to have been underrated since coming in & I like an underdog. I have this vision in my head of these guys all killing it at RB this, OSU scoring 70 a game & no one having issues with not getting the ball enough. A pipe dream for sure, but I hope all these kids get their chance to contribute..

I can dig it. :)
Yeah, not gonna happen but it'd be sweet. Eventually, one or two of those backs is gonna be seeing nothing but bench, just due to the fact that the guys ahead of them are doing a few of the small things better than they are.
There's not a scholarship back on this team that couldn't start on just about every other big ten team. Michigan might be the only one, if Derrick Green and Deveon Smith are as good as advertised.
Really hate to see players that are that good end up transferring, but you can hardly fault them if that's their decision down the road.
That said, it wouldn't surprise me if Ball never winds up in that position, and ends up being are primary back for awhile. You watch him run and you can see that he has some key traits that almost all of the really great running backs have had.
I've always believed that the most important traits were a low center of gravity and quick feet (Emmit Smith and Beanie Wells come to mind). Warren Ball - Check.
Followed by vision and a knack for finding the small creases that get you that extra couple of yards consistently (Boom was great there). Ball - probable check, but need to see more of him to be sure.
Then just flat out speed to go the distance once they're out in the open. Really haven't seen enough of Ball to make a judgment here yet, but I suspect he's fast enough. If I remember correctly, Emmit Smith was only like a 4.6 40 guy and still broke plenty of long runs. So flat out speed isn't really all that important next to the other traits.
All our RBs are good enough to be starters in our conference. I really wanna see Dunn, Ball, Zeke, and Wilson get carries with Smith and Hyde out. I would prefer Hall stays in the slot/ pivot role because he is awful at running between the tackles and is much more of a threat in space
I think Wilson shouldnt get carries inside the tackles. His strength is speed and should be used either on screens, tosses, or option pitch type plays...he needs to be used in space.
I honestly couldn't tell you whether he should or shouldn't get carries inside I haven't seen him play enough. I would have a tendency to agree with you that I would think he'd be better in space. However he could be like Percy Harvin and run well between the tackles unlike Jordan Hall who goes down if you sneeze on him.
from some of the info comimg out of camp Wilson has been with the WR exclusively. Elliot has been working with the RB's as they say he is more suited to run inside as well as outside.
There was also a direct quote from Meyer himself a week or two ago saying D.Wilson is a RB not a receiver. Im guessing Meyer considers his pivot position to be a RB just moving all over the field instead of a WR that occasionally takes handoffs. Perception is key.
A wise man once said "success is not final and failure is not fatal"
awlinBrutus- I've heard he's been working with both groups been in both team meetings but more WR than RB though
That's correct. But I see a lot of Pac 12 games, and I seem to recall seeing DeAnthony Thomas scorch some defenses between the tackles a number of times. He gets to the hole that much faster, and then he's gone. Surprise!
Bucky Badger might know a little sumthin about that.
I personally dont think we would even try to run Wilson between the tackles more then 3 times a game. Visions of Mo. Wells running DAVE are still dancing in my head, and I have a migraine.
As Ross has said in the past, we ran Dave a lot of the time last year.
I have no problem at all running DAVE With any one of our big powerful RBs. Now running it with 175lb. true freshmen will just bring back memories of Mo.Wells bouncing off the back of the linemen for a hefty gain of -1.
Seems to me that Hall proved he belongs. 12 carries for 126 yards and 2 TDs is impressive no matter who you're playing. Hall clearly showed he deserves to be a major part of this offense moving forward.
21 carries 159 yds. 2 TDs
Speaks volumes that we saw ball and elliott but not dunn. Also surprised we saw trey johnson and no mike mitchell considering trey was slowed by an early injury and mitchell was one of the first to lose his black stripe. Didnt even hear of trey johnson losing his.
Hall looked great, but I'd like to see more substitutions with our huge depth. Give Ball and Dunn carries to give Hall a break. Fresh legs are important, and we can certainly use them.
With Rod, and eventually Hyde coming back, I don't think either will get that many carries.
That's true. I'd just like to see more carries distributed around the depth chart. A fresh Ball is better than an exhausted Hall or Hyde.
Do you remember the games against Nebraska, illinois, Indiana, and M*chigan? Hyde doesn't get tired. lol
I would like to see Rod Smith show everyone what he is capable of. It would be nice to see him start and get over 20 carries a game.
I live in fort Wayne Indiana now (where Rod Smith is from) he was an absolute beast in high school. I would like to see the same thing out of him at the college level. I think he has it in him, he is powerful and quick.
I also feel we should be able to produce 2 running backs who run for 100 yards plus each game. We have the best depth at running back compared to any team in the nation. This gives us the ability to keep "fresh" legs in every play! We should be destroying people this year with the run plays. (I only hope our O-line is up for it)
