PHONE'S RINGING -- IT'S URBAN ON THE LINE
Interested to see how Bama looks now that we've seen OSU for the first time this season
First touch of the year for Bama is a TD........wow
Defense looks good this first series. Excellent containment and ball swarming D. 0 yards for them, and now we run the punt back. I like it.
They would kill us as of right now...
“I have yet to be in a game where luck was involved. Well-prepared players make plays. I have yet to be in a game where the most prepared team didn't win.” -Urban Meyer-
They could kill about anyone right now.
"You'll be proud of our young people in the classroom, in the community, and most especially in 310 days in Ann Arbor, Michigan on the football field."
Agreed. We'd lose by a few TDs.
That was the worst possible scenario for V.Tech in this game. I thought they might have tiny shot if they could hang with Bama early and see that they are in fact human but wow
Man is their defense fierce. This is going to be a rout.
Their corners don't mess around with soft coverage like ours do either. Press coverage almost every time...
Their defensive coordinator > Our defensive coordinator
Their D is one big crimson blanket.
I think this will be a blow out, but we will find out shortly
look how close alabama's corners are to the recievers. are their corners that much better than ours? why dont we play more bump and run coverage? being 10 yards off of the receiver results in those 5 yard quick outs. buffalo made most of their yards doing this. we need to be more aggresive in our defensive play calling. tighter coverage while blitzing a linebacker might allow us to get more consistent pressure on the QB. it still looks like were running a version of bend but dont break.
DB is Saban's bread and butter, and he's got a heavy hand in that part of the team. Our DBs tend to get burned at least once a game, though, so watch for that.
they may get burned once or twice a game, but playing close coverage like that allows the D to get pressure on the QB since he can't dump it outside after a 3 step drop. i notice bama is always bringing pressure on almost every play as well. i think thats what makes them so good on D.
Loving the first pass from McCarron. Gorgeous pass and catch.
Followed promptly by a not so pretty pass, lol.
Early going, but Bama's OL is not looking quite as dominating. We'll see how they gel as the game goes on though -- like OSU's DL, a lot of new starters there.
I'm missing last year's O-line already.
Yeldon is a much more shifty RB than Lacy was, Lacy was just 'give me the ball' and go. Cant dance too much if the O-Line isnt pushing people around/giving you time to dance.
True freshman left tackle, against Bama...welcome to college football.
Our offense is somewhat disappointing up to this point. This line will develop some chemistry and things will definitely improve. Love Cooper though, he breaks Julio Jones' single season yardage record this year, I think.
Alabama's O-line is not very impressive at all, Cooper is a fantastic wide receiver, and their defense is still very good.
Agree with your assessment. Yeldon has had to break a tackle at the line of scrimmage on pretty much every run he's made -- which he can do, as he's arguably the best RB in the country. But when they get into games with A&M, LSU, etc. that could come back to haunt them if the OL doesn't gel.
LSU, yes. A&M, not so much. They gave up over 300 yards rushing to Rice today, and were fortunate it wasn't worse.
I say that not because of A&M's defense, but because A&M has an offense that gave Bama fits last year, and would give any defense in the country fits. If Bama's OL isn't gelling, they're not moving the ball, and if they're not moving the ball/eating clock, Johnny Football will put up 30+ on them once again.
That said, I think Bama wants payback against A&M, so they might put a whooping on them. Will be entertaining either way!
Well, with all the young guys VT are playing, not backing down from Bama...yet. Bama had to earn that TD.
Good, strong run by Yeldon. This offensive line, as I had feared during the off season, looks fairly green. Lots of new starters, and having been spoiled with such an amazing line for past year, they probably aren't as bad as they look. I'm just used to seeing a mutli-year starting unit.
They'll get better, it will just take time to develop that chemistry, not to mention gain some game experience as a unit. I think we'll be okay :)
Wow! What a run!
Bama is human after all.
Well... SON OF A BITCH! 78 YARD RUN ALLOWED, RIGHT UP THE GUT.
I LOVE the look of pure confusion on the fans' faces just now, haha. Something we're not quite used to, giving up long runs.
Bamas D looking worse then Buffalos D
A wise man once said "success is not final and failure is not fatal"
Buffalos D Mack
Wow, this game shows just how legendary Bama's O line was last year.
I've been pissing and moaning all off season about the loss of that line from last year. It's definitely a point of worry, and their performance so far validates those fears.
Now, they're young, they will get better. The talent is there, the experience is not. I still have faith in them, but they have a lot of improving to do.
Holy CRAP what a break on the ball by Sunseri. I'll take points any way we can get em.
Our Honor Defend!
Remember Bama hired Sunseris dad to get him on campus or am I thinking of another kid. Know he played a role in Depriest going south.
VT missed a wide open response TD right there and you cant do that on this stage.
Well bamaMike that is the one time they will get beat deep all night and Logan over threw the WR. Good to see that bama is having a little trouble but there still the best team I have seen all day!
VATech defense is really keeping Bama in check. Too bad the special teams and offense gave up touchdowns.
Sunseris, dad used to be the LB coach at Bama but last year decided to take to D-coordinator job at Tennessee not sure if he got fired or if butch left him on the staff.
Ya, Sunseri's dad was the LB coach at Bama. Dooley hired him on as D-coordinator for a HUGE pay increase, but that lasted one year before Dooley was given his walking papers. Sunseri went to highschool at Northridge, which is about... 15 miles from the Alabama campus. I don't think his dad was hired to lure the kid there...
How do you not run there on 3 and 1? Never understand getting cute and trying to throw for it on 3rd and short when you have a QB who's having an iffy game.
Impressed with VT's defense so far
VT's defense playing very well but it won't last long if their offense keeps getting 3 and outs. I might have even tried to run the ball up the gut on that 4 and 1. Its risky but their D needs some rest.
Damn it, our line is looking worse and worse. They are getting blown up on every single play.
Sounds like we're having the same problems, even though the Bucks line shouldn't be that big of an issue.
Thats how you wrap.
Bruce Smith could still play
Worst pass I've ever seen McCarron throw. Off his back foot, no velocity on it. Geez.
Pretty impressed with VT's defense right now. Gotta put up a TD this drive
I wonder if they're making "step away from the ledge" forum posts on bama sites like we did today when something slightly bad happens
This isn't last year's Bama. They're still very good, but they're definitely beatable this year. Last year they were a juggernaut. Va Tech is missing an obscene amount of starters, was 7-6 last year, and isn't insanely overmatched. Bama is better, and will likely win, but they're human this year if this game is any indication.
Of course their schedule is as easy as ours, so it may not matter until the championship game.
love running backs who just hit the hole fast
wow, poor decision by Thomas there...thats been his biggest problem in his development, still inconsistent with decision making
Wow. Bama's going to win this game because of their defense and special teams units alone.
This years bama no matter what their D and special teams are doing here wont make it to the championship game. Georgia or lsu or even usce could beat this team.
Good thing we don't play Georgia or S Car in the regular season :p
Again, it's the FIRST GAME! The line will gel, and develop, as a unit. That's the biggest issue so far, we can't run because they're blowing holes in our line. Can't pass because they're blowing holes in our line. That's the issue right now, and it will be addressed.
I can safely say that I would NOT want to be the o-line after this game. We get next week off, so they have a 2 week long ass kicking by Saban incoming. They will look much better vs A&M, take that to the bank.
No I meant that as you will not make the BCS National Chamionship game. You guys might make it too the sec csg but you will have to face UG or USCe and I feel both teams would beat you if the game was next week. You better hope the line gels some but the bottom line is one of the greatest lines in history is gone and it wont even be close to that line last year.
I completely agree about never having another line like last year's. However, did you see how crappy S Car looked on Thursday night? We would have no problems with them. I haven't seen UGA play yet this year, so we'll see how they look tonight @ Clemson.
100% agree we won't make it to the NCG if our line doesn't improve.
Christian Jones is going to single handedly make the score of this game look WAY different than what the game actually should be.
Looks like Bama has a special teams weapon.
Penn State game is tight
Special teams is the difference in this game.
So are Buckeye fans feeling better now? I can't tell. Every team is beatable
95 total yards..28 yds rushing on 17 attempts?
Bama should be getting housed right now. VT is a middle of the pack BCS school that will finish 3rd or 4th in the acc
And just for the record Bama is not a slow starting team and usually comes out the first week punking people into submission. If we were to make it this will not be the team facing us and if it is it will not be a team to lose sleep over.
Score is 28-10. What the hell are you bitching about!?!! V-Tech is no Buffalo or Akron..
They were 7-6 last year, and three of the seven they only won in OT. The jersey might say Virginia Tech, but this was a bad team last year. Barely bowl eligible and lost to an FCS team.
I can't decide if our O-line is this bad or their D-line is that good. Either way, I'm not liking what I see. Saban will fix it, I have faith in my coach.
Your O-line is inexperienced, which is not the same thing as bad. Our D-line is the same. It's a long season, guys will learn their jobs.
Our offense, as a whole, looks disorganized and confused. It's definitely the worst start I've seen since Saban arrived, we usually truck our opening opponent. I know they'll get better and everything will be okay, I just expected a little more out of them than I've seen to this point.
You're not a juggernaut this year like you were last year. Still tons of talent, and if you improve as the year goes on still a potential national champ. Right now? You're probably not the best team in the country as I type this, and we're probably not the second best. Doesn't matter; win every week, improve every week, and teams are very different at the end of each year than they were at the start. You might be a little spoiled by just how ridiculous your team was last year.
Not sure St. Saban is going to be able to fix everything and make it all ok this time. This is one of the worse offensive performances so far against a very mediocre D that I have ever seen. I thought MSU was bad last night. I will have to check stats to compare. You guys will win this game but the final score will not tell the tall tale.
/sigh, why does it have to be "St." Saban? I have faith in my coach, as I should with what he's done the past 5 years. I have seen us play like crap and the coaching staff makes adjustments and it gets better. Isn't that what coaches do? We don't pay them to stand on the sidelines and look pretty.
We're sub 200 yards offense at the moment, in the 4th quarter. I've never seen us struggle this badly, but it WILL get better. Lots of talent, just needs coaching and experience. We get the line fixed, things improve rapidly.
Careful, Colerain, your SEC hate is showing :p
Yes I do have a anti-sec bias but that is created by the all mighty eSpin. I respect the very good consistent sec teams but this year looks way different with bama. VT is a horrible team and the season ahead will shwo that. Im just glad you guys are so far behind at the beginning of the season because this is the time of year when you fellas drop beat downs on top 25 teams. My early observations are you guys will slip up and not make it to the bcsncg. Right now i would be rooting to face this bama squad just to alleviate all doubt in the publics and eSpins mind that we beat the kings. I will settle for whooping UG or LSU or Team CLowney though. You guys will have a great season but you have to admit this is the worse saban offense in a very long time.
100% worst Alabama offense I've seen in a long time. However, they have enough talent on that side of the ball to get their heads out of their ass.
We just need the line to step up. They do that, the rest of it kinda works itself out.
Man, if VT had a hint of an offense, this could be a 1 possession game.
That pick 6 was huge.
that and Logan Thomas being like 4/30...credit the bama DBs but have to also credit Thomas as a very very average-to-below average QB
At the very least, you have to think some teams on Bama's schedule will be the smallest bit less afraid of them. Could make for some interesting games. I'd love to see Oregon's offense, or even OSU (if our defense improves) against Bama. I think if this is the level of performance we can expect out of Bama's offense at times throughout the rest of the year, they'll likely have some close calls (LSU, A&M, maybe even Ole Miss, and the SEC CG) and potentially a couple of losses by the time it's all over.
Early yet, but this doesn't look like the same Bama offense we're used to. Defense and Special Teams are there. Though their pass rush hasn't been elite to this point, either.
If our offense plays like this all year, we lose 2 at least. I just don't think they will.
Very possible. Gotta say though, this is probably the most anemic I've ever seen their offense under Saban. They really don't look to have any playmakers on offense outside of Cooper (occasionally), Yeldon and CJones (who is a better PR/KR than WR). Where are Robert Foster and all of those other 5* recruits?
The other thing I wonder is if VT hasn't shown everyone else the blue-print. Load the box and dare Bama to throw. Without the run game to open up the passing game, McCarron looks lost.
Did it say 10/23 110 yds. 1 TD 1 INT for Mcarron?
Former UM commit Dee Hart is the RB now,kid decommitted from UM late in the process after they told us what a gamebreaking 5* he was. Looks to be 5'7 165 lbs still.
Just want to thank Bamamike for taking the critiques, but keeping his cool. Good to talk to someone with different team allegiance than us.
That said, I'm sure you knew what you were walking into. ;) Not gonna get a lot of love from OSU fans for Bama haha.
Hell, Alabama EARNED the criticism they got tonight. We looked terrible, at least compared to what we have been. Our offensive line was really bad, but it was their first game as a unit, so I give them a pass. I'm happy we have a week off before A&M, so maybe they can fix the issues. I'm also glad that A&M's D-Line looked do bad tonight.
I came here, initially, because I really got attached to the Buckeyes after starting to follow them since they're my girl's team. Now, I would cheer for them against anyone other than Alabama.
On another note, it's early but Clemson looks like the real deal. Tahj Boyd and Sammy Watkins remind me of Troy and Teddy in 06. How good their defense is remains to be seen however
all i know is bama looks beatable. btw, i think ol'nick was using too many rb's to keep them ALL happy for recruiting purposes and that played a part in the offense being inconsistent. vatech defense is good like usual tho. so who knows? should be a fun year to watch
