For the first time in 13 NFL seasons, fans will be without the privilege of seeing the two greatest middle linebackers in the history of league playing football next year. Regardless of what he was off the field, Ray Lewis-in my opinion-is one of the few players in professional sports who's status as THE all time great at their position is unquestioned. As for Brian Urlacher-there will never be another one like him. What he lacked in traditional MLB play, he more than made up for with a once in a lifetime combination of speed, size, strength and study.
I'm not saying it hasn't happened, but I can't think of a time when the two very best at a position retired after the same year. Regardless of how you about either as a person, they totally and completely revolutionized the most important defensive position in football.
See you in Canton #52 and #54.
