"Calling into question a player's toughness? Check. Demoralizing player during mundane task? Got 'em. Using a player's position in a derogatory fashion? Affirmative."
I'm curious as to why they believe this is actually worth being on the news.

I think it was a positive story celebrating the richness of football during a time when not much else is going on. The site that shot that video is pretty fly, though.
Isn't that a mistake?
I'm assuming the writer saw the video on Lost Letterman.
wow, IMO mike foss can suck it. I'm pretty sure someone commented on the videos yesterday and said "usually screaming at players is frowned upon - in football it's praised". and now we can't even have that. C'mon America!!!
I like football
I got much worse than what Coach Coombs gave him in peewee football, and I wasn't even on an $100k+ scholarship lol. This is part of what I believe they call "the wussification of America."
Spot on.
YEAH MAN! AMERICU IS GONNA TO HELL! DAM LEEBS wun evun lettuce haaave r footbal witout it been PUSSEEEEFIIIED!
DUR HURR! DUR HURRRR! (Chugs natty-lite with one hand, and nacho cheese sauce with the other, then promptly passes fat ass out on the couch)
"What do you need water for, Sunshine?" Coombs yelled. "We're stretching! And you're a kicker!
seems like he made several valid points in a row.
In times like this I ask myself "what would mike nugent do?"

Wussification of America!
"You win with people." - Woody Hayes
Otherwise known as the feminization of the male species. This is what liberals do and the media and academia as well as government are full of people like this that want to dumb down & wussify American's because THEY KNOW BETTER THAN US!
Because they wouldn't let me go for 3!
Woody Hayes 1913-1987
For the record, I am fairly liberal and I always rail against wussification. Its not a liberal/conservative thing in my opinion.

THE Ohio State University
It's worth being on the news because it's Ohio State, with all that's gone on in Columbus for the last 2 years( Tat gate, undefeated season) the Bucks are going to get scrutinized to nth degree and frankly there are a lot of people who will do anything to cast the Bucks in a bad light. My Opinion anyway
Battles are sometimes won by generals; wars are nearly always won by sergeants and privates. Football is no different, the guys down in the trenches win the games, not the coach.
Of course if this was Alabama, then the kicker would pass out and Nick Saban would step over
his prone body on the way to the locker room.
And Saban & the SEC would be celebrated for doing that to a kicker.
Because they wouldn't let me go for 3!

Because the clip is really, really awesome and they know that anyone that appreciates old school coaching will enjoy it.
i'm glad he brought this up...i'm sure if basil is kicking a FG to tie or win on the road, the fans will be nice and quiet and if they do say anything to him, it will be all flowery and nice.
awesome clip. keep on keepin' on coach.
the kids are playing their tail off, and the coaches are screwing it up! - JLS
Yea Coombs' comments to the kicker is way worse than locking a player in the closet. It's called motivation! Grow some balls and quit thinking everything should be rainbows, gumdrops and unicorns. This is what happens in every level of football.
Right on Coach Coombs
I'm a Michigan fan and saw this same subject posted on MGoBlog earlier today. My reaction was literally "who the hell cares and how is this remotely newsworthy?" Talk about looking for controversy that doesn't exist. I'm all for bad press for OSU if it's warranted, but even as someone who was born and raised to hate the Bucks, I think this is complete BS.

i want an angry/tough football team...if a players feelings are hurt by the truth than Ohio State isnt the place for him... this isnt a hold your hand and tell you how great you are type of place
You are correct. That place is located in Ann Arbor.

i wish i had coombs coaching me
Hell I wish I had him following me around in my every day life bitching at me...... Oh wait that's what my wife does.
The world has changed. A lot of things are good, but this is bad. People are just too soft. Unless he was being sarcastic in his criticism, the writer for USA Today is an example of this wimpy culture.

Good thing the kicker is not a Boren. He would run off and cry to the press about the lack of family values at OSU under Urban, and he would transfer to Penn State (God knows UM wouldn't take him).
I saw that post, actually thought it was kind of funny. Even most Michigan folks recognize this story is a non-story, but still nothing wrong with having a little fun at the Boren family's expense given the history there. All in good fun. Besides, is that post really any more insulting than the Brady Hoke/Fred Flinstone thread on 11W? These are blog sites for rabid fanbases - of course they're going to crack jokes at the expense of their rivals. Don't take everything so personally.

At the Boren family's expense?
Their father was a captain for the suckerines.
You can rag on Justin all you want since he jumped ship, but Zach owned the suckerines, and his little brother Jacoby is lining up to do the same.
Cue up the butthurt.

Like I said, try not to take everything so personally. I know the Boren family history just like you do. Just because a player or coach is good doesn't mean you can't make fun of him. The irony of your post is that you're the one coming across as butthurt. I never said the Borens weren't good players - quite the opposite, they are. And Urban Meyer is a good coach. But if you think this makes them off limits when it comes to cracking jokes then you're probably too sensitive to be following big time college football. Perhaps you'd be more comfortable watching soap operas or reading romance novels instead.

Jesus, he didn't even use profanity...this is nothing like what George O'Leary at USF or even Brian Kelly on the sidelines. News framing at its best, the writer's opinion is bleeding through the article.
Life is tough and unfair. Sometimes the best man does not always win. There is no santa claus.. Political correctness continues to contribute to the weakness in our culture. Hopefully college football will never surrender to this.. USA today? Really? Toughen up America!
I put a different spin on it. Stretching is important to a kicker. By missing part of the warm up, the kicker is increasing his risk of a pulled hamstring or quad muscle, something that has befallen Nugent in recent years, IIRC. Coombs wasn't demeaning his position; he was giving constructive advice on how to be in a position to compete.
Exactly. I think he's saying this drill is important for kickers (i.e. instead of skipping the drill to take a drink he should be out there setting the example). I think there is also the hint that as a kicker there will be other more opportune times for him to sneak off and get a drink, like when they're doing tackling drills or something.
I once had a football coach tell me he shits bigger than me. Later in the same practice he screamed from across the field, calling me a female reproductive organ because a receiver outmuscled me for the ball. He rode me hard all the time. If I saw him today, I would shake his hand and thank him for making me a tougher person. What the hell do people think goes on in sports if something like this is considered harsh?
Not sure I understand the angst over this. I thought it was a typical USA Today fluff piece that was done in a tongue-in-cheek manner, with no real antipathy toward Coombs or OSU. Now if it been ESPN, it might have been a different story (or at least a different slant on the story).
Oh BFD. We all love Coombs and his ways-he fusses at guys but then is the first to get excited and chest bump them when they do something well. You have to admit he is pretty hilarious in his umm, comments, at least the ones that we know about. He must have a whole repertoire of them. Keep doing what you're doing, Coach.
0 out of 10 on the Kelly-o-meter for red face. Wake me up when Coombs gets some color in that face.
Class of 2010.
This article is a joke. Woody had a scholarship punter (someone help me with the name) and during his freshman year, Woody literally kicked him in the can once and refused to call him by his name. He just called him "punter". The guy admitted he got his feelings hurt. But he responded like a man and by the time the guy was a senior, he was an all-american. Looking back he has a deep affection for Woody for making him a better man.
Now excuse me while I go and channel my inner Oprah.
Yea heard that on 97.1. I believe Woody called him "Punter" until he was an All-Ammerican.
Ok I can't stop thinking about this story (or lack there of). But maybe we are looking at this all wrong. The kicker needed water and possibly had his legs cramping up. We know his uterus was cramping so this seems likely.
Someone call Nugent so he call tell this ass clown kicker why we love him, why his teammates made him a captain and to please not ask for anything just wait for permission.

I finally watched the kicker video. I think that's just his talking volume. I didn't notice any difference in delivery between this and the EZE locker room pitch.

Usa today? That newspaper is still in business? Coombs is a good coach, i like how he does his thing.
Some people are motivated by a foot in their ass. I know I was when I was younger. I agree with everyone who asked if this was even news. I don't think he has played football, and if he did tell him to take his flags off and play like a man.
Wherever you are, there you be!
I tried to yell at my girls basketball team like that one time and they all cried so I had to take the sensitive approach from that day forward...lol I'm serious, coaching junior high girls is totally different than boys. With boys, it's expected that you yell at them but if your a guy coach and you yell at girls like that, they aren't used to it at first. You have to gradually work them up to it....lol
I didn't read the article but I'll say this...people are way too sensitive these days. I'm sure my Football coaches would have been put in jail for what they did and said to us. Did I agree with it...YES! Did it make me a better football player? Hell YES! I wouldn't find it surprising if USATODAY or whomever made a bigger deal than necessary out of this and many things. Most media outlets and people in general usually do these days. Sad IMO...just sad. I found the comment to be hilarious...
"Hey sunshine...do you really need water already...??? What did you do....??? You're stretching! And you're a kicker!
OMG....he should be fired....NOT! Now you all see why I don't coach anymore....it's a joke to see some becoming so sensitive about stuff like this...Bull shit IMO.
