Urban on Hyde

I just came across this gem in an otherwise bland article about Urban visiting Naples (Hyde's hometown):

"'Carlos is the best big back I’ve ever had,' Meyer said. 'Last year, I thought he was really outstanding. He developed into one of the best backs I’ve been around. He just has to be consistent and he can finish his career as a really successful football player.'"

He did, I got it....but Tebow may as well have been a big back at Florida.

Too bad that great QB efficiency rating hasn't equated in the NFL...where it matters most.  His throwing motion as well as slow/lofted passes will make it so he never gets another shot again.  Haven't heard anyone who's going to sign him...???  Not even the Jags are interested....that's not a good sign IMO.

I didn't realize he was still playing in Coach Meyer's system in the NFL? Coach Meyer said that Carlos Hyde is the best big back he has ever coached. Someone said that Tim Tebow was basically a big back at Florida. While at Florida, Tebow led or was near the top in passer efficiency for the 3 years he was a starting QB, while being coached by Urban Meyer.

That is all. I think Tebow is a wrotten NFL quarterback, my response was about when Urban Meyer had the opportunity to coach him, like Coach Meyer's comment is about Carlos Hyde.

I could see Braxton being WAY better than Tebow in the NFL...especially if he continues to improve his technique.

Edit to the above: Tebow was a big RB at QB, that part is correct.  However...sorry if you all think he was a beast in college...bc that matters not in the NFL.  My point is correct and supported by executives in the NFL...ppl that know way more about evaluating talent than any of us....but I probably don't know what I'm talking about...right??? Even Urban said...If I were coaching against him, I'd make him pass.  Hmmm....wonder why he said that....but again...I know nothing about this subject bc it was all based on college stats...which means shit in the NFL.  Look at how many Heisman winners haven't done shit in the NFL...I'd say RG3 is the only one proving my point incorrect at the moment.  Last one to amount to any thing was Reggie Bush...and that one can be debated.  So, college stats mean nothing to me...when concerning the NFL.  Which is an example of how good a player actually is...IMO again btw.

That would be cool, I know I'm eager to see Brax get a shot at the next level.

Way overdue for a Buckeye QB to make it in the pros (sorry Terrelle, I know Troy is giving it a second shot). It's been too long since Mike Tomczak.

The new and improved El Braxton....I hope he shreds with his arm this year. Love hearing about the offseason work he's been putting in. I can see Brax throwing like Troy yet staying electric like Terrelle (if need be).

Either way, pick your poison opposing defenses, you're looking at one of the best offensive backfields in the country this fall.

+1....youth will be served on both lines, imho. There will be a real game time learning curve, and I don't expect consistency/effectiveness straight out of the gate.

But there's an abundance of talent, to go along with young men that want to be there and work hard. That, along with some coaches who seem to know what they're doing has me feeling pretty good about this football program right now.

And El Guapo and Brax running and gunning......August can't get here soon enough.

buckeye76BHop's picture
buckeye76BHop on 10 Mar 2013 - 9:38am #

Hyde will be the X factor this year in making Braxton and the offense click.  It was last year and everyone can say this and that about Philly Brown, Hall, or say how the new guys from 2013 class will make it unstoppable all you want.  We don't have El Guapo vs tTUN last year...and that may have been a different game....

Hyde is going to be a major cog in the offense, no doubt, but he won't be the X factor.

For starters, I don't believe his workload significantly increases more than he had  this season. In 12 games, he toted the ball 185 times. With Hall's injury, he was the lone experienced back (I wouldn't consider Rod Smith experienced at the start of last season) that the offense could lean on.

As we've seen spring unfold, last year's offense did not include the H-Slot position at all. We basically scraped the tip of the iceberg in Meyer/Herman's offensive playbook. The offense went through Braxton and Hyde  because of the absence of the H-Slot position and the limited playbook the offense truly had available. Meyer and Herman have both talked about needing to attack the field side to side as well as vertically with speed.

Although the H-Slot is primarily a WR, it is also a position that is going to motion into the backfield and take "traditional" carries from Hyde via an option/read/sweep. At most, I see Hyde having 200 carries this season through 12 games. Which is significant, but I do not see his role expanding, I see the rest of the offense expanding and evolving.

The X factor by far on this team is Braxon plain and simple. The offense is only going to be as good as Braxton, which we've also heard Meyer and Herman say (sky is the limit).

Beyond him, the second X factor is going to be Jordan Hall or whoever can step up into the H-slot and bring that dynamic speed (east-west) and play making ability the offense previously missed last season.

I think Hyde is tremendous, and a great weapon to make our offense dynamic running with power and speed, I just don't see him being the focus. Now, if Braxton doesn't progress as a passer, and nobody steps up in the H-Slot, then we may see El Guapo saddled up for 250+ carries, if thats what it will take to win.

Brutus Greyshield's picture
Brutus Greyshield on 10 Mar 2013 - 12:45pm #

I agree with you in principal. I just wanted to point out that Hyde played in only 10 games in 2012. He missed the Cal and UAB games after injuring his MCL in the UCF game. So, if he avoids injury he should surpass 185 carries in 2013. I also think he'll get more opportunities to run the ball simply because the offense will pick up more first downs and thus get to run more plays. I also expect the team to build more comfortable leads in the third quarter which would add to Hyde's total by giving him some clock-killing carries.

The great thing about Urban's offense is that when run smoothly the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Having Hall in the lineup will indeed help Hyde. Toward the end of the season opposing defenses were cheating up and in on the Ohio State offense (see Wisconsin) because we couldn't put any lateral strain on the defense without a true H and we could put little vertical strain on defenses without receivers who could get open in the deeper levels of coverage. Safeties won't be able to cheat up and LBs won't be able to cheat in next season....at least that is the plan.

osu07asu10's picture
osu07asu10 on 10 Mar 2013 - 1:43pm #

Fair enough, I failed to take into account missed time due to injury. End of the day, I think his touches probably won't be more than 20 per game.

I also totally agree with the sum greater than the parts of urbans offense and system. I think the h is going to make life a ton easier for Hyde and vice versa.

Beyond hopefully being healthy for the 12 reg season tilts and beyond, I still see a limited increase in carries though. I think in addition to the H taking some touches, we've also got Smith, Dunn, Ball, Elliot. All in their second year in the system sans EzE. I think they can all expect an increase in workload if their effort and dedication have been there.

Also, Urban has never had a 1,000 rusher before Braxton and El Guapo barely missed. I think that speaks to the offenses total diversity. Even in Tebows "worst" passing year he still threw for 700 yds more than Braxton last season (2750 to 2040). I see the increase in production coming from Braxtons arm more than any players legs

Brutus Greyshield's picture
Brutus Greyshield on 10 Mar 2013 - 2:38pm #

I hope that Rod Smith plays to his potential next season. I'd love to see him earn more playing time. He has so much potential.

I think that we're seeing a slight shift in Urban's offensive philosophy--a move away from the smaller more fleet-footed backs and toward big backs. When he covered the National Championship Game last season he remarked more than once that Saban was winning with big backs. Also his talk of learning from the 49ers and Redskins who both happen run single-back formations and read option plays with big backs (Frank Gore & Alfred Morris). The pistol formation makes it easier for the big backs to run the inside-zone read plays because it allows the big man to keep his shoulders parallel to the line of scrimmage and to step forward on the snap and build momentum--it's a downhill formation.

I'm just rambling now because I can't wait for next season. Is it August yet?

Brutus Greyshield's picture
Brutus Greyshield on 10 Mar 2013 - 12:48pm #

But, yeah, Braxton is the true X-factor. Even if an opponent's defense does everything right, he can still make a positive play. He's the best player on the field.

Bolt's picture
Bolt on 11 Mar 2013 - 12:47am #

You can't call the two major components and most productive factors of an offense "the x-factor"..."the x-factor" is the guy who is not one of the major sturdy dependable guys that comes out of nowhere -- sort of unaccounted for, as the other team has to deal with the main factors -- and changes the tide of games. Brax and Hyde are the main factors, not the x-factors (as that term has come to mean with modern sports). Someone like Jordan Hall or Devin Smith or even Jalin Marshall could be x-factors. But the game plan is going to be built around Brax and Guap so they can't really be the x-factors.

cinserious's picture
cinserious on 11 Mar 2013 - 11:01am #

Bolt is right, Braxton and El Guapo can't be considered X-factors. Jordan Hall will be a key factor in Urban Meyer's style offense this year so he can't really be called an X-factor. Truth is, really don't know who the X-factor will be.

I agree with your general point but disagree on calling him "x-factor" a x-factor is an unknown quantity. Hyde is as close a thing to a known quantity on the team. Jalin is a x-factor, we don't know what he is exactly but it could be big.

rdubs's picture
rdubs on 11 Mar 2013 - 9:18am #

I agree and I see Hall as the biggest X-factor since he is in a new position and has yet to tap the potential that the coaches have seen in him.  The freshmen will always be a bit of an x-factor, but I think Hall is the big one on offense this year.

Like some others have said, I would love to see rod smith get some more touches, he just oozes with potential. If he limits his fumbles I think he sees he ball more, but I don't see how he gets many with brax, guapo and hall. I would love to be proved wrong, but barring injury I just don't know how he gets significant carries until next year when Hyde and hall graduate.
