It's all about trolling the Buckeyes and their fans. I'd bet hardly anyone voting even remembers Randle El's college career--it's not like anyone outside of Big Ten country would have ever been interested in seeing Indiana football.
I'm looking forward to the Bob Christian vs. Desmond Howard poll question.
No doubt, Troy Smith had a great year in 2006. I checked his stats again, and his 2005 stats were excellent too. He was also very effective on the ground in 2005. Surrounded by an extremely talented supporting cast in the Big Ten, it's no wonder he won so many games. But, Smith was only a two year star. He didn't do much in 2003 or 2004.
Randle El was a four year star and earned All-Big Ten in 1999, 2000 and 2001 and was Big Ten Freshman of the year in 1998. And, he certainly didn't have the same supporting cast. In terms of overall career, it seems like he had four very special years by Big Ten standards. I don't know if four special years outweigh one phenomenal year (or two excellent years), but it's something to keep in mind.
Did he stand out for 4 years? Sure, he was at Iowa, who was going to start over him? Smith was at OSU and played at a VERY high level accomplishing more than Randle El had. There is nothing to downplay Randle El, great college player, but Smith stood out on a bigger stage. Randle El was the "first" in a hundred categories yet was never given more than 6th in Heisman voting. Even the voters of his time didn't think he stood out. Why would he stand out more than a guy who did?
while this is sad and shouldn't be the case, most non-ohio state fans (not necessarily haters, just not buckeye fans) remember troy smith most vividly in florida's thrashing of osu in the national championship game. he was a great player to be sure, and it's an unfair way to remember him, but that's probably true for some people.
i think the big test to determine who was better is to switch QBs. Would troy smith have been as successful with the WRs and running game indiana had? how about the defense? how would randle el have played if he was the head signal caller for osu?
at the end of the day, it's just a vote and doesn't really matter. i'm sure osu fans are perfectly happy to have had smith and wouldn't trade him for randle el (albeit at an earlier time). these polls are really just ways to give football junkies something to do in the offseason
Just voted and all I can say is this is BS! Randle El had a good career but, as others have already said, the Heisman trumps everything. Not to mention his annual thrashings of the skunkbears. Go Troy!

Indiana Football is beating OSU at something at the moment.
Randle El better than Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith?!? Please.
This is a classic case of OSU hatin'.
No way in hell Randle El is better than Troy!!
SCOTTC.
Buckeye haters outnumber Buckeye fans. Voting is futile.
The most "loud mouth, disrespect" poster on 11W.
For one, it's hard not to not factor in their pro careers (Randle El's success after moving to wide receiver)...
Secondly, it's hard to look at those numbers Randle El put up and not factor in the fact that it was at Indiana.
Still though, my money is on Troy!
how is this even a contest?

i'm picking up what you're putting down, but good lord a heisman is a heisman.

Think you meant Indiana, not Iowa.
I think Randle El may have beaten Iowa once while in Bloomington.

Troy is up to 47% now!
Troy Smith should win this on Ohio votes alone... come on people...

OP may consider adding something to the title to show its a vote not just a forum topic ie... Help Troy Smith defeat Randel El
Nothing like dancing on the field in 02...
Voted. No dissing Randle-El, he was a very good football player. He set records.
But I like Troy....he won games, and a pretty significant individual award.

I voted for Troy twice - once yesterday and once today. Troy still trails 47%-53%, wtf???
Last time I checked Troy Smith won the Heisman trophy ........ how is this even a contest?
JT
The whole state up north is voting for randle ELL.... They can't vote for a guy who went 4-0 against them.
For the love of all that is holy, EVERYONE VOTE NOW!!!!!!!!
men of troy!!!
I like football
Vote!!!
it's already over...voting closed
How can you compare them when Randle El never had a national championship game to not show up for?
kvs
if troy smith played for indiana, he wouldn't have had one either...
