Coach Meyer, in his press conference, talked about the "Reid Fragel Award"--this is a guy that will come out of nowhere to be a great player. Meyer mentioned Fragel as being a below average player (at TE) that turned into a very good player (RT--will get drafted). So my question is who do people think this player will be? Gotta think with so much loss at D-Line and LB it will come from there (Urban brought this up in regards to Tyvis Powell at Star, but he may get pushed back after players come back from injury).

If Doran Grant counts I'll go with him. Has the potential to be All Big 10 in the future.
if doran grant counts, so should noah spence, and ill go with spence. 10+ sacks this yr.
mark may wins douchebag of the year... again
dude, Spence isn't coming out of nowhere. He is already a stud. He doesn't qualify.
Joshua Perry.
The 2012 National Champions.
Perry was a guy I "voted" for earlier. Good call.
Well, Urban mentioned Powell, Decker and Farris so that's a good place to start.
Give me Steve Miller.
JMO, but he's playing behind Spence so unless there is an injury......
Kenny G. GO BUCKS!
I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then.
Devan Bogard
The postgame show is brought to you by... Christ, I can't find it. The hell with it...
Joel Hale
I'm going to go with Jamal Marcus. Could be our surprise pass rusher
Passing downs, we could go with a defensive front of Marcus/Lewis, Bosa, Washington, and Spence/Miller... that could be scary.
I wouldn't cheer for Michigan if they were playing the Taliban.
On paper that is 1 amazing line
Now, imagine that line in 1 or 2 years...verrrrrrry scary.
sweet jesus
Darryl Baldwin or Pat Elflein.
I wouldn't like it to be either of these guys, I like how the line in and if it were one of these guys that would mean something went wrong. That is of coarse unless Baldwin takes the left tackle spot, then I'm all for him
Curtis Grant
After watching tonight's game (albeit basketball) Aaron Craft should also be put on this award's name in true B1G fashion. Don't get me wrong I love the kid but he plays far outside of his talent level IMO. Fragel was a talent level 7 at tackle but played at a 10. Much like Craft who plays at a level much higher than what many others would be able to do with his skill set.
I think you have it backwards on Fragel. He has Tackle talent level 10 but played at 7. That is not his fault because he had but one year to learn but his athleticism is off the charts and he is not close to his potential. Whereas Craft exceeds his physical limitations.
I get what you are saying but maybe I didn't phrase it properly. Fragel was in a battle with a true freshman going into last season. I don't know if I would say he was a 10 at tackle but he played his ass off and ended up as a 10 albeit his overall tackle skills (not just talent but knowledge of how to play) was around a 7. Similarly, Craft is not the greatest athletic specimen but he plays at a very high level.
Agreed
Rod Jones.
Braxton Miller.
I'm not sure Miller would "come out of nowhere".
Maybe he's insinuating a surprise takeover at punter too?
The guys I think have the potential to come out of no where and have a very good season (in order):
I feel there are high expectations for Decker and Bell so to me, they cant come from "nowhere", but if they come out and be better than expected that would be great, but not from "nowhere". I would love for Perkins and Powell to be impact players this year.
No Roderick Smith?
"Here officer, hold my beer while I find my license."
Nice list, I think I'd add Michael Thomas as well. I think he'll have a very solid year. Word is he was really impressive at practice yesterday. He's not gonna catch and run for 80 but he runs excellent routes and has unreal hands. Aka he'll be a big catch guy that moves the chains on third down in big spots. I think he'll be a factor in the red zone too. He's a perfect compliment to our slot guys IMO
I dont care who it is, as long as he plays LB.
Can I hope that it's Chris Carter???
That is legit, and I hope that is true, I may change my vote to yours!
That is who I was hoping for too but I can't say I'm optimistic.
He won't come "out of nowhere" but I think this could be Jordan Hall. I don't think he has lived up to expectations at all, and maybe a position change (similar to Fragel) will allow him to play up to that potential.
Completely agree.
Nothing like dancing on the field in 02...
Based on the news that he was getting reps with the 1s, I'd say Tyvis Powell is my selection for this aware. With all of the hype around so many members of the 2012 and 2013 classes, he was certainly overlooked. Hope is works out and we see him on the field making an impact.
**Also, I've got to admit that Fragel finally earned his way out of my own, personal, meaningless doghouse last year with his on-field play. The kid grew up a Red Wings fan, but tossing an octopus onto Blue Jackets' ice is not something I want from a Buckeye....at least until they play as consistently as he did last year.
Frank E as the next All-American punter at OSU
Teams will always fear the threat of a fake punt
Dare I say Rod Smith? Played well last year when he held on to the football.
Why are people acting as if Rod fumbled the ball 40 times last year? :/
"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.
It is what happens when you have a backfield that is 4+ deep. I love what Rod brings to on the field but when you have that many guys fighting for limited carries you have to first and foremost protect the football.
Sorry guys it was reported he was passed by Dunn on depth chart. He's really coming out of nowhere as a 3 stringer.

David Perkins if we're counting him. If not I'll go with Rod Smith.
Give me Gardner. Hard working kid that proved how bad he wanted his offer. We are thin at o line and this kid was not highly rated by the recruiting services.

guys, I think you really misunderstood the point of the Reid Fragel award. The idea is that someone who has been with the program for a bit, say at least 2 years, and has either under performed to this point or hasn't really had much of a chance. To say Braxton Miller, Noah Spence and these up and coming freshmen/sophomores is not what the Fragel award is about.
I don't know who it will be but I have a feeling it will be Curtis Grant, Doran Grant, Chris Carter, Chase Farris, Steve Miller or Rod Smith. 3 of those guys are 5 stars that have yet to do much despite some opportunities and/or little PT. If anyone of those 3 shine this year, that will be huge.
and truthfully, I think this award should be the Fragel/Boren award. Both of those players made position changes that made the team better than it really was and both succeeded after a few so-so years.
Everyone here would be very happy if it were Curtis Grant, but some of us try to think outside the box of the guy everyone wants it to be
