The Best Coaching Positions in College Football

Athlon Sports came out with a their rankings of the best coaching postions in CFB. I'm not sure how I feel about Ohio State being 5th but I guess I can't argue with the reasoning they give for the schools above it. What do you all think of the rankings?

I think the explanations of Pros and Cons are superficial at best.  Not much of an article.

Not sure if Cali is "the most fertile recruiting area in the country" (USC) nor that Texas is a great job to have with Mack Brown unable to win games... so I think the rankings are a bit weird.

To me there are about 5-8 programs that are interchangeable at the top of college football. Obviously OSU is one of them but after that it is simply personal feelings that will lead a coach or player to that school. Most of us on here would choose OSU if we were a blue chip recruit or coach but that feeling can be different for someone who grew up in Texas or Florida.

If Florida is the place to be, why aren't FSU, and Miami higher than 11, and 22? :/

"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.

I guess with any "Rankings List" there is going to be some superficiality and some opinion but it's all still entertaining fodder for the off season

I'd say Bama, USC and ND for sure.  Then I think OSU, UM, UF, LSU.  I don't even think of Texas until after those schools, but it could be living in the present.

2. FLORIDA "Ben Hill Griffin Stadium offers one of the best atmospheres in college football, and the fan base is as rabid as there is in the nation"

ABSOLUTELY FALSE!

I live in the heart of Gator country and since Urban left their fans have jumped off the bandwagon!

Disagree with UF at #2.  In terms of current prestige, they're way up there; but they have virtually no history outside of two coaches (that both left), and have yet to prove that they're a program that can sustain long-term excellence.  I'm sorry, but a decade of Spurrier, six years of Urban Meyer, and one good season under Muschamp do not make the second best job in all of college football--especially considering that they play in a loaded league and have to fight a myriad of other premiere schools for top-tier talent, even when it's in their backyard.  The job's barely top ten, in my opinion.

I'd argue that there's four distinct "regions" where College Football is king in this country: the South, Midwest, West, and North.  Accordingly, each of these schools has one "prestige" school that claims dominion over its region, due to various factors such as historical precedent, sustained excellence, and current performance.  In the North, you have Ohio State (UM and ND are runners up here); in the South, it's 'Bama and then everyone else (UF, LSU, and FSU come next)--'Bama making an interesting case because of how a "down" school can lose momentum and then regain it by hiring the right guy; in the Midwest, Texas reigns supreme (OU is next); and in the West, you have USC (though Oregon's coming on strong).  These programs and their respective runners up are the power programs of college football.  Of these, I'd say that Texas is first, and though USC has massive potential for dominance, I'd say that OSU and 'Bama are in a basic dead heat for number two ('Bama gets a slight edge with the dynasty Saban has carved), and then USC.

And calling Georgia, a program that hasn't won a league title since 2002, the eighth best program in the country (better than ND, LSU, and FSU) is complete bullshit.  Georgia is top twenty five, but calling them top ten is a travesty.  This writer seems to be slightly biased towards SEC schools.

I agree with D1145Fresh, in that the schools could be lumped in tiers.  Here was my top 15 (in no order) destinations that I posted here:

Alabama
LSU
Michigan
OSU
PSU
ND
Florida
Texas
Oklahoma
USC
Oregon
Georgia
Nebraska
Stanford
Florida State

Stanford was the only one that the author disagreed with me on (inserting TAMU), but I'll keep them in my top 15 as Stanford offers the top education for a school where you can play some really good football, as noted by the author.

I would place Florida 5th, Texas, Alabama are a legit top two. Then tOSU would be third followed be USC. I would slide Florida down because I feel all the other programs have a much better history and longevity

Hogwash... Buckeyes should CLEARLY be ranked numeral uno!

Only reasons I could think I would go tOSU 3rd is bacause of two reasons. 1, conference. Everyone outside the B1G is critical of the conference. 2nd weather.

Maybe Athlon should have changed their criteria from "where would we want to coach" to "where would we want to coach if we were not named Urban Meyer."

Did you guys check out their ranking of B1G Coaching Jobs? Admittedly I'm not a fan of lists like these, but it is pretty interesting to see how they rank the league's jobs.

Sneak Peek: 1. OSU, 2. UM, 3. PSU, 4. Bill Brasky, 5. Wisky...

I don't see anything wrong with the list.  Obviously, I would swap #1 and #2, but with OSU having more recent success, I'm OK with them having OSU #1.  I think it's 1A and 1B with Michigan and OSU and 2A and 2B with Nebraska and Penn State.

I would also put OSU and UM as 1a and 1b. I've actually seen some lists where they are ranked together.

My surprise came with where Illinois and MSU landed. Granted Illinois has been lousy for a while, so I can see why they're 8th I guess. But is Iowa a better job than Illinois? Not sure who I'd swap out to out MSU higher though. maybe 6th is where they belong.

I think with these types of lists, it's a matter of what time frame you're referring to.  Are we talking about today, over the last 5 or 10 years, or all time?

Obviously, PSU is probably not #3 if we're talking about the present.  Wisconsin might be top 3 after making 2 and 1/2 consecutive Rose Bowls.  From a sustainment point of view, I like MSU and Iowa to be ahead of Wiscy and Illinois, respectively.

We've talked about tiers within the conference on here before, but I think that's kind of what we're looking at here:

Michigan and OSU  Tier 1

PSU and Nebraska Tier 2

MSU and Wisconsin Tier 3

Northwestern, Purdue, Illinois, Iowa  Tier 4

Indiana and Minnesota  Tier 5

...something like that.  NW and IU are trending up a little, while the others are trending down in Tiers 4 & 5

I strongly disagree with this ranking. In the top 5 Ohio State is the only school that doesn't have major BCS contenders in their state to take recruits.
