Interesting View on TP and OSU Faithful

Saw this thought provoking article and considered that some may enjoy reading it, while others...not so much. Does bring up some good points.

First, neither Carter's actions nor Clarett's led to a beloved coach being fired, as Pryor's arguably did.

I hate when people act as if Pryor was the only person involved in it.

I'll root for Pryor to do well even if the entire fan base were to turn on him.

"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.

People tend to forget that many of the players on OSU's roster are immature and sometimes misguided kids who because of their athletic abilities, were never able to manage their way through adolescence/early adulthood by trial and error quietly as most common people can and do.  Every move they made was magnified, both good and bad.  This goes for Cris Carter, Maurice Clarett, Troy Smith, Terrelle Pryor, and any other OSU player to have some sort of controversy surrounding them for improper behavior.  Even guys who never found controversy like Hawk, Robiskie, Fraser, Simon, and Jenkins were under constant watch from OSU fans, rival fans, and media just waiting for them to slip up even once.

Pryor did a lot of good at OSU.  The enabling culture that surrounds successful athletes at all levels is to blame for Pryor's transgressions.  Most immature kids with an extremely limited worldview in most situations would have trouble saying no to the things Pryor was offered/provided with.  He was an immature kid who made some questionable decisions.  His biggest curse was that he made these decisions as a kid in the limelight.  None of us who have went through high school and college making a few bad choices should wish doing so under a magnifying glass on anyone.

He also wasn't the brightest bulb and made stupid comments about "how we all kill people..." in his response to the Michael Vick support/ eye-black debacle questions. QB is a little different because you're generally more of the face of the team and are expected to be a little more poised and intelligent than the average guy on the team.

I wouldnt say he wasnt bright just because he made a few bone-headed comments. Some people just arent good at public speaking which happens to be one of the most feared things amongst humans. Please dont insult someone's intelligence based off a few comments...

I agree with you.  I love Coach Tressel.  I cheered for him as loud as I could when the 2002 team was honored at The Game this year.  With that said, the reason Coach Tressel was fired was because of one man's actions.  His.  Had he not of lied, he would still be our coach.

I personally wish everybody would let this go, and move on.

Yep I totally agree! Jim Tressel got Jim Tressel fired plain and simple...

Bolt's picture

Aside from that, there's only one person responsible for Jim Tressel being fired: Jim Tressel.

um what? so you mean Tressel would have been fired if the Tat-5 didnt do what they did?

I'm pretty sure he's saying that had Tressel acted on the information he received(when it was received) in the proper manner, he'd still be coaching the Buckeyes.

But if the Tat-5 dont do the crime in the first place then Tressel wouldn't have anything to worry about correct?

Swisher: If the Tat-5 didn't do anything, then of course there would be nothing to worry about. However, that didn't happen and it was Tressel's responsibility to tell the truth, which he didn't. I'd be willing to bet the NCAA sanctions would have been lighter had Tressel been truthful.

Well yeah, but they did. If he'd come forward with the info they would've served suspensions and that would've been the end of it. Part of being a coach is dealing with the dumb things your players do off the field.

SPreston2001's picture
SPreston2001 on 5 Mar 2013 - 11:15am #

Swisher thats not the point at all. Kids make mistakes and its up to the Coaches to correct those mistakes and make sure they dont happen again. You cant blame the players for Tres getting fired when Tres tried to cover it up and lie about it. The players broke some rules and then Tres broke some rules.

Bolt's picture
Bolt on 5 Mar 2013 - 11:49am #

Right, but if Jim Tressel acted on what he knew a handful of players would've been suspended, maybe we lose a couple more games and Jim Tressel is the coach of the Ohio State University football team today. No one except for Jim Tressel forced Jim Tressel to lie to the NCAA. If he handles it like he did with Troy when Troy took money he'd still be sitting in the head seat. Players will run afoul, it's going to happen anywhere you look. Coaches aren't expected to run perfectly clean programs. They're expected to not lie to the NCAA when issues arise. Tressel didn't get fired because people committed violations. He got fired for lying to the NCAA.

I want to see TP do well for the Raiders but let's be honest the Kaepernick comparison is laughable. TP was never anywhere close to the accuracy level, or able to make reads/go thru progressions like Kaepernick. Yes they both can run but that's the end I the comparison. Vince Young is a better comparison and I think he was considerably better than TP and he was never going to be good enough to sustain an NFL career even without the off the field and mental issues. I just don't think TP is an NFL QB.

FWIW: I once heard Cris Carter talk about the stuff that lead to his having to leave OSU early. As you know Earl Bruce was fired after the team underachieved that season. I don't know how much different things would've been for that team if Carter was eligible to play, but Carter actually said he does blame himself for Earl Bruce's firing.

This is more or less what I've felt about the situation. I'm glad TP's gone and we have that mess off of our hands but don't wish him any ill will. It's not only in our best interest to have OSU QBs succeed in the NFL for recruiting, but to have mobile dual threat QBs in general have success. The more these dual threat type recruits see guys in the NFL having success running some of the read option stuff we run at Ohio State, the less we have the stygma of being a a system that will hinder your ability to make it as a pro.

I was and still am a big fan of #2.

He was a heck of a ballplayer (with a Mortal Kombat-quality stiffarm), All Academic Big Ten, and not a criminal by any stretch.  It was wrong to trade the memorabilia for tattoos, but the ax fell on the program because of Tressel's inaction and coverup.  TP deserves blame for his role, but no Buckeyes fan should wish him anything but success at the next level.

The postgame show is brought to you by... Christ, I can't find it. The hell with it...

We won lot of games because of Pryor making some plays at the crunch time, Two BCS victories, Win against the SEC. I think we should all forgive him. The problem was not Pryor the problem was my beloved coach(Tresel) who made some special reservations for him. If he would not have done that, the scandal would not have happened and tresel would not had to lie about the whole situation. Well I was cheering like a anything in the shoe when tresel came and its time to forgive Pryor.
