Hyde weighs in at 242

The Ozone posted the offensive depth chart with player weights.... All the rbs seem to have put on about tens pounds... Cardale Jones is up to 241.... Vannett is up to 255.... I am sure this is all good weight

I'm thinking that's good weight with an offseason under Mickey Marotti.

It's typical this time of year in off season weight training to get as big as humanly possible then lean out through the summer before fall camp. Fully expect him around the 230 mark come August.

If it isn't good weight, one can rest assured Coach Mick will get it off....fast.

If it is planned weight for Hyde....good lord....imagine being a safety and seeing that come at you after your DLine and linebackers failed you miserably and let Hyde into the secondary un touched.

at 240lbs, catching hesitant defenders trying to sift through OSU's read-zone offense, Hyde need be only as elusive as a bowling ball, to be highly effective.

Cardale Jones at 241 lbs.? That sounds like JaMarcus Russell territory, even at 6'5".

EDIT: okay, just checked JaMarcus was around 265 in college, so not quite. 240 sounds big for a QB still.

Yeah, I'm not sure why it jumped out for me.  CJ might not even look bulky at that weight, given his height. JT Barrett is coming in at 6'1" 230 lbs.

He is off running so wouldn't be surprised if Barrett put on a little weight. Also not totally surprised have heard that he was well built, I think it's part of the reason he's got a lot of comparisons to Troy Smith who played around 220 in his own right.

lljjgg's picture

If it's Alabama weight (i.e. human bowling ball), I'm good with it. Trent Richardson -- 5'9, 230. Eddie Lacy -- 5'11", 220. Mark Ingram -- 5'9", 215. So 6', 242 isn't outrageous by any means.

I feel like the days of a four year starting QB are about to end with Braxton.  Meyer will attract too much talent and it will start to get REALLY competitive back there....which is a good thing.  Assuming Braxton stays all four years, Cardale will get a shot as a JR/SR, Barrett Will get a shot SO/JR/SR and so on.  I like that we're starting to get guys some experience and time with the coaches before throwing them to the wolves like we have been the last several years.

I think Cardale's turn gets skipped.  I have the impression that he's in Columbus because someone threw a bone to Ginn Sr.

His only shot is if Brax leaves after this year, and Barrett redshirts this year.

I got to see him and Braxton back to back against St. Ed's in 2010, and there was no comparison even then- Miller had that Huber Hts. team on his shoulders the whole game.

Ed's won both games, and went undefeated that year.

That said, Braxton almost won that game for Wayne- he threw a bomb in the fourth quarter that would have/should have been the go-ahead touchdown had the receiver not dropped it.

That was 3(4 by the time Braxton leaves) years ago. A lot can change in that time period.

I have the impression that he's in Columbus because someone threw a bone to Ginn Sr.

You make it seem like he was an unranked bum that Ohio State(JT) gave a scholarship to because of Ginn.

From what i've seen, CJ has all of the tools to succeed.

Cardale was not a super-highly recruited player- if I recall, he was a 3* guy (not like that means anything), and there wasn't much interest outside of the Midwest.  He was/is certainly not a bum, but his future in Columbus at the QB position is anything but clear.

Well... Urban Meyer called Tom Herman the QB Guru, so I think the can develop Cardale.  I'd like to see it where our QB is a redshirt sophomore or true junior each year.  That gives each QB 2-3 years to prep their body and learn the system.  That would be an ideal situation for me.

Jones very highly touted actually..far from getting a bone thrown his coaches way. 6'4" who can run and throw..doesn't sound like a "Bauserman" to me.

I would have liked to have seen Hyde, and all the running backs come in at the same weights or lower than last year but with reduced body fat, more strength and quickness. All of our backs have good power but Urban is right when he says only Jordan Hall has the quickness to make you miss.

All this talk about "Good Weight".  I haven't seen Good Weight on me since College.  LOL... Sign me up for the Marotti experience.  If I live through it I might see some good weight again, instead of the belly weight I have been sporting....

Seriously, if Hyde is ripped and solid at 242, that will be a challenge to the LB's, and defensive backs even more so than last year.  I like the power and the speed we have in our backfield and WR's.  It should be fun to watch.

I'm not sure about many here....but it is very possible to put on weight by gaining muscle (Duh).  I do believe it's possible for many of these guys with 6'4-6'6 frames to put on 15-20 lbs in an offseason.  Not sure why they're BS...sometimes they'll lie about weight loss or height in a program or what not.  But not too sure why they'd falsify weight gain...???  Not to mention Hyde already weighted 235 last year...so he only put on 7 lbs...which isn't much.  I can put that on in a weekend...if I eat too much;-)
