4-2-5

It seems that The Ohio State base defense is going to be a nickel/4-2-5 look this year instead of the tradition 4-3. I think this move until we can get some proven linebackers out there on the field besides Shazier. Also, I feel this plays towards are strength more. What does everyone else think about the move to run a 4-2-5?

Gary Patterson has done a pretty good job with the 4-2-5 @ TCU the past decade or so. If you have a lot of speed on Defense, (like OSU), then this is a good scheme to take advantage of that speed. It seems like almost everybody runs the Spread Offense, but, if you have guys who are fundamentally sound & can tackle in space, then the 4-2-5 is the way to effectively negate the Spread O. Given our personnel, I'm a fan of employing the 4-2-5.

TCU was really one of the unsung teams last year imo. I watched a few TCU games last year where the production they were getting out of that defense honestly amazed me. Lack of offense was generally what hurt them, their defense was excellent. If I was an AD I would have thrown any money after Gary Patterson I could have. It would be exciting to see what he could do with big-name defensive recruits at a bigger university (ala Auburn before they offered Malzahn).

Wonder if Texas will look his way once they're through with Brown? Though it does seem like Patterson's pretty happy where he is, UT would be damn near impossible to turn down.

Agree with you on all points, Hodge. Would be an excellent fit at UT, and seems like he's pretty happy at TCU, so the UT job is likely one of the few that'd draw him away. Kind of wonder how long Mack Brown's job at UT will be secure if they don't start getting back to the production you were seeing from them in years past (albeit, multiple BCS games and a National Title win is hard to beat). If the ship isn't righted, you wonder if a Bobby Bowden-esque forced retirement doesn't happen before it's all said and done. Mack Brown's resume is too good to force him out abruptly imo.

I like the idea but it shows the continued lack of trust towards our crew of LB's. This puts alot of pressure on the front 4 to really step it up.

The reasoning they gave was the schedule will require it so might as well start perfecting it now

I think we play quite a few teams this year that run the spread and throw it a little more so it doesn't bother me.

Penn State, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Michigan don't run a Spread Offense

Triv's picture
Triv on 7 Mar 2013 - 4:40pm #

And more importantly, Alabama doesn't run a spread.

If we get to the title game and play Bama we damn well better have 3 linebackers on the field for most of the game or Yeldon will have a field day

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

Penn State might be slinging it around a lot this year.  But I agree with your point.

Also, we might play UM twice.

Utah State ran the spread offense under Anderson and they just inked the #1 spread JUCO QB last year so that will change for Wisconsin.  Also, Al Borges has said they'll still run about 50% spread with Gardner at QB, so that debunks 2 of your teams listed above.  Penn State will suck no matter what offense they run and Michigan State won't have a very good offense without Bell.

Teams from the SEC will use 4 WR sets and teams like A&M and LSU run basic spread offenses.  Playing a 4-2-5 won't hurt OSU at all.  We will develop a 3rd LB to play some 4-3, but a 4-2-5 will be used too.

I tell you what, I love the 4-2-5. Played in that scheme in college, and we absolutely ruined people. Had a lot of speed on our team and it was fun.

Fun until we met up with Mount Union in the Playoffs and got our jocks shoved down our throats.... but i digress....

I like the 4-2-5.

Love the 4-2-5!! It plays to our strengths and masks some of our weaknesses.I think our d-line will do pretty good in this scheme, especially with how Urban likes to rotate bodies and keep fresh legs in the game.

4-2-5 may be the ideal defense in todays college game. a lot of teams running some sort of spread attacks. i like it.

I still think the TCU team that went undefeated was one of the most underrated defenses of all time. They just dominated teams on D that year. That being said, I don't know how well that would work against a Wisconsin/new Michigan offense, etc.

I don't know how well that would work against a Wisconsin/new Michigan offense, etc.

I, too, was skeptical that the 2010 TCU defense would do well against Wisconsin in that season's Rose Bowl. Wisconsin had a powerful offense in 2010 - maybe the best in the country. I predicted that they'd steamroll TCU's 4-2-5 defense. Instead, TCU contained the Badgers for much of the game, winning 21-19:

WISC's offensive numbers:

1st Downs: 20

Total Yards: 385 yds

Passing: 12-21 (159 yds)

Rushing 46 for 226 yds

Wow, completely forgot they played Wisconsin that year. Kind of completely contradicted my last statement with my first.

Idk how much you remember from that game but Wisconsin ran all over TCU. Ball averaged 6ypc and Clay averaged 7 ypc. They lost the game because their offensive coordinator thought after winning 11 games with an All American offensive line and playing smash mouth run football they all of a sudden became a passing team. It was not the TCU defense by any means that won that game it was Wisconsin's terrible play calling that lost the game.

I do remember the failed goal line (2 point conversion I think?) play where they decided to pass when they were getting about 5+ yards every time they handed it off. Another example was when OSU switched to a more 4-2-5 with the star position in our vacated season and Wisky beat us. They were running over us the whole first half. Things like this is why the playoff needs to happen, it's almost impossible nowadays to be able to prepare for every single type of offense (we decided we needed to evolve to defend the spread and end up getting beat by the power run game we used to destroy) so an occasional loss is bound to happen. Even the current Bama dynasty loses a game every season.

otrain2416's picture
otrain2416 on 7 Mar 2013 - 9:31pm #

yeah that was one of many questionable calls on the wisky o coordinators part that night. The ironic part about last year with all our LB problems and injuries our defense definitely played its best in the 4-3 against the run even though we were in the 4-2-5 the majority of the year

Run_Fido_Run's picture
Run_Fido_Run on 7 Mar 2013 - 11:49pm #

OTrain: I agree, as I felt the same thing during the game = "just pound them into submission, Wisconsin." But, before the game, I expected that Wisc would just blow TCU off the line of scrimmage. Instead, TCU held on for dear life, got Wisc into some third and mediums, and Wisc did not consistently convert. We have to give TCU's defense some credit in that game for forcing Wisc to sustain drives.

This isn't a change. It is just being practiced earlier. The bucks are still a base 4-3 team. When an extra receiver comes in, they go to 4-2-5. This isn't their base D but because so many team typically have the extra WR on the field, the 4-2-5 will be on the field longer than the base.

It's simple.  We will play both schemes switching the game plan depending on what offense we are facing.

I think it plays to our strengths well and is an effective scheme, but call me old school, I'd rather have 3 massive linebackers out there killing people like in the heyday of the Tressel era and the rest of our great history.

If it were up to me, we'd be a 3-4 team.  More athletes on the field that way. Unfortunately we don't have the linebackers to do it at this point even if we wanted to.
