WSSP 1250am in Milwaukee today was debating whether UW needs to reduce their standards to match TOSU's recruiting. Unfortunately my battery on my phone was dead so I couldn't call in and ask them what UWs mighty standards were compared to OSU's.
From what I can tell, OSU academic progress rate is better than UW's, and OSU's graduation success rate is 9 points higher than UW's. I'm hoping that the next time they debate this I will have a phone with power. Entrance statistics for admitted students were essentially the same, I just don't understand what they are talking about.
My daughter was accepted to both as well as several other B1G schools as well as schools like Marquette. She of course made the right decision and attended Ohio State and graduated in four years with honors (Cum Laude).
I will say she was offered a very nice scholarship from OSU as well as a scholarship from the OSU alumni association (neither me or my wife are OSU grads). Her main reason for attending after taking visits to several schools was the feeling that she had while on campus. My wife and I had the same feeling that Ohio State was the place for her.
Go Bucks!

Agreed. Would love to see some facts on academic standards. Anyone on the staff able to provide any info? Think they are tired of getting their asses kicked now, wait til teh next 10 years. We must be going to allow 14 for ACT scores to get in with the beatings they will get.
It's funny you should say a 14 for an ACT score. My daughter knew a UW player from our town that left after his fourth year (red shirt as a freshman) still did not graduate. He had a 14 on his ACT and like I said spent four years at UW before leaving for a year in the NFL without success.

They constantly make these claims about stooping to our level but have no factual information or specific examples of what we're doing that is "below their standards". It's just a bunch of people being pissy that we're recruiting far better players than they are and their classes are horribly lackluster.
Their comments show the effects of long-term Leinenkugel abuse
Hey now, don't knock the maker of Summer Shandy...prob the only good thing to come from that state.
Yeah man, my favorite since Leinie Red!
Lienenkugal is the best thing to come out of Wisconsin.
I once went to the Leinie Lodge in Chippewah Falls. Still have the beer glasses.
C'mon, there are much better beers out of that state. Admittedly, I'm not a Summer Shandy fan. I live in IL only 30 mins from the border so I sometimes head to Wisconsin to get good brats and beer.
EDIT: Sorry, realized that this could seem really beer-snobby. I know it's a matter of taste...and I've just not been fond of anything Leinenkugels.
I agree: Ale Asylum, Lake Louie, New Glarus...etc.

Summer Shandy is the shiz for sure...cheese is good, too. Not all cheese comes from Wisconsin but cheese is yum.
Class of 2010.
As far as I know Wisconsin follows the same general NCAA guidelines for acceptance just like Ohio State.
Also interesting read from awhile ago but would certainly still be relevant
So they have gone "below their standards" for years to allow athletes to enroll in classes
The amount of butthurt Urban is infliciting upon the B1G is becoming rather comical.
I don't think they were referring to the acedemic standards. They were most likely talking about Urban's perceived "sleezy" recruiting practices.
They were actually talking about the athlete and how their standards would not let in most of the Buckeye players.
WIBUCKEYE
Uhh, they had Bielema for a coach, don't tell me that they didn't lower academic standards to let in football players he wanted. EVERY D-1 school does it to some extent. Even vaunted schools like Princeton and Harvard tweak admittance reqs. Now, would they let in athletes with a 14 for an ACT score? Questionable. But they do drop standards. Knew a swimmer at Princeton who was very smart to begin with, but will tell you that she would not have been admitted without an athletic hook, or, barring that, a building named after her family. Silliness.
Yeah, I agree. I mean, they had to lower their standards just to hire Bielema as coach...so they probably do the same for players.
Next we'll start hearing that they only want "Wisconsin Men" up there and that will be the next excuse.
I wasn't aware that the current magnitude of anger from opposing fanbases was even possible
Hilarity....go with that UW. Whatever makes you feel better.
Cue the 'Laverne and Shirley' theme song please.

Class of 2010.
At least they're aiming to be like us...
I love stories such as this! You don't hear 'afternoon radio guy' complaining about the admission standards at Iowa or Illinois or any other Big Ten school who isn't deemed a threat. As OSU's success continues under Meyer, it's only going to get worse. Some use a microscope, some use a telescope, but they're all pointed directly at the football offices located in the WHAC. We are the benchmark.
While every program has its thugs (Christian Bryant *cough*), Urban is really running a class act here. Is it extremely aggressive, brutally honest, and uncomfortable for others to deal with? Sure, but just check out Coach Meyer addressing the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association. There he gives pracitcally an hour long speech about how the most important part of football is establishing a positive relationship between coaches and players and then setting up the athletes for success later in life.
There may well be some not so pretty side to this program that has not been exposed yet, but everything checks out with me thus far. All we're hearing here is the whiners who cannot step up and would rather berate others. Sounds to me like these radio hosts wouldn't be allowed on Urbz's team, coach Marotti would eat them alive. "Soft guys don't play!"
Christian Bryant a thug? How so?
Class of 2010.
In my opinion he plays pretty dirty. Taking cheap shots, and late shots. Frequently. Then he'll go for the big hits (without wrapping up) all the time, missing half of them. I was at a couple games this season, and remember being a bit turned off by the way he composed himself on the field.
For awhile I was turned off to Christian Bryant, especially at the beginning of the season when he and almost everyone else on defense weren't making sure tackles. As the season progressed I became more and more impressed by him. I think he will have an incredible season next season.
You may think he's dirty but he's no Jay Valai.
I may not have been paying close enough attention but I didn't notice Bryant as anything close to dirty. Then again, maybe he's the player that had a couple of late hits this year but I don't remember.
I think of "thug" meaning off the field problems. If you want to say he's a cheapshotter or plays dirty, that's different to me.
The most misused word in sports-"Thug".
I really hate to be that guy but if you have ever seen real 'thugs' you'd realize few, if any, athletes are actually thugs. Especially one who's an honor student....
4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off
Okay, yes that's fair. My bad, he does play dirty at times but thug is unfair. I apolgize, all the down votes hurt! Lesson Learned!
If you want to listen to the 2pm podcast I've attached the link here. Its about 10 mins long and I recommend you start at 33:00.
Highlights from the conversation
I think these guys took the idea of recruiiting the 4 and 5 star SEC type players too serious.
*So if PSU and Michigan got good QBs from the midwest this year, what's so wrong with getting TP before Tatgate happened?
Ohio State's band SLAUGHTERED Michigan's band. If this were a football game, it would have been Florida State vs. Savannah State. - SB Nation following OSU vs. UM 2012
That segment was a complete joke. It wreaked of "Wisconsin is holier than thou." And since when does having a 4 or 5 star rating on a recruiting site automatically mean the kid's character is flawed as he suggests. Or that something shady has to occur in order to land them. Unbelievable the diarrhea that was being spewed from the mouth of that one jackass.
Thanks, BME, for saving the torture of searching through that to hear the bit. So, now we are always going to hear that Urban is cheating in some way because he recruits everyone else under the table. And it was a holier than thou effort from the Wisconsin people for sure. Forget the 2 NC rings on his fingers and overall record. We're not talking about a .500 winning percentage coach here.
I've often thought Saban must do something shady to get as many players as he gets. There is no way he can possibly keep landing these stud players over and over without some kind of payola going on. Then I think that might not be the case but rather a case of someone just knowing which buttons to push. I do think Bama is aided by the oversigning and the SEC's huge assistant coach salary edge, but I also think Saban is just really good at understanding what draws these top-level players. Its a psychological advantage. Meyer's good at it, too. His degree is in psychology, afterall. Wisconsin has no idea how to get those kind of players.
Wisconsin and its fans know the best chance they had to compete with OSU in the future left when Big Bubba Bert left town. As good as their new coach is, nobody knows who the hell he is outside of Utah. Everyone has heard of Urban Meyer. Vonn Bell wasnt going to Madison that's for damned sure.
"Sherman ran an option play right through the south" - Greatest.Civil.War.Analogy.Ever
I know a guy, friend of mine, attorney in Cincinnati. Staunch Republican. I work for a Milwaukee based company and our corporate sales coordinator has family hand down tickets like at midfield. I can't go, but set him up with the tickets. Right around election time, right? So I call him to confirm that he got the tickets and made a comment about the election not working out. He said "you know what, I couldn't vote for Romney, and you know why? That son of a bitch Paul Ryan is from Wisconsin. I hate Wisconsin! Assholes!". True story. It runs deep.
Thanks for the insight
Was Russell Wilson actually involved in a serious academic pursuit during his few months in Madison, or were he and the Badgers taking advantage of a legal loophole in order to mutually benefit each other? If the answer is no, and I assume it is, then Wisconsin is without a leg to stand on here.
The most "loud mouth, disrespect" poster on 11W.
And they tried the same with O'Brien from MD. Only problem is he sucked.
boom
OK, how does Wisconsin rationalize the other 142 years that OSU has been better than them?
Class of 2010.
The Kool Aid gets served as Sour Grape when you're getting your ass kicked.
While they are going through that time of the month and talk about fictitious topics we will continue to talk about when we will win another national championship! Wisconsin colors are White & Menstrual Red
It seems to be an article of faith at every other B1G school that Ohio State is just a "football factory" with no standards. Nevermind actual facts or statistics.
Delusion doesn't really bother me. If a bunch of Wisky fans want to walk around thinking OSU is dirty and lets in anybody who can play football, and that's the only reason Wisky loses, fine. No skin off my back.
I'll take our conference championships and national titles, and those will be even sweeter because my understanding of the college football world is based in reality.
Every program has its black marks, rule bending situations, and so forth. Whatever. As long as it isnt jerking around one of these young kids lives (ala oversigning, which I am not here accusing any particular program of doing) or actually criminal (ala cocaine-parties and hookers), then I don't really care. The NCAA and its rule book are a disaster. Every program fails to follow NCAA rules at some point, because its darn near impossible to follow the crazy rulebook.
Wisky can feel free to be holier than thou. Maybe they're going for the "we're the holiest program" mantle that was so recently abdicated by PSU and Notre Dame.
I've definitely been subjected to a lot of noise with little substance when it comes to Sconnie fans complaining about UFM. Educated people just blurt out "he's just not a good person" or regurgitate something Bert said. I ask them to watch any of his press conferences or the ESPN All Access to see how much he cares about his players, but that's apparently too much to ask.
To be honest I've seen the same standards, actions, etc. out of athletes here that other schools proclaim tOSU athletes exhibit. From a Sconnie perspective it really is the pot calling the kettle black - or more simply, jealousy.
Probably concerned that 7-5 won't get them to Indy next year for the chance to lose another Rose Bowl.
"Wisconsin radio station debates if Wisconsin should consider having recruiting standards."
Thug or not some coaches like to think they can help these young men become better men with their education and football as well. Do some kids that come in stick to their ways and not necessarily follow the rules, sure.
But that shouldn't obscure the number of young guys that come in and graduate and become model citizens that might not have if it wasn't for a free education because they can play football.
Look at every school not just OSU, being able to help the kids become better young men is also one of the reasons coaches do what they do, not just to win championships. Maybe these Wisconsin radio guys should debate Ryan and his standards for allowing a kid to go play bball somewhere he wants if he isn't getting playing time at his school, hypocrites.

There isn't a scholarship player on Ohio State's roster any year that Wisconsin coaches wouldn't give an offer if the player was interested in going to Wisconsin. The simple fact is Wisconsin has less resources (facilities, location, etc) to attract top talent so they have to develop the 2-3 star guys instead.
This is just a natural reaction to change in general. "Why should we 'lower' ourselves to the new way of doing things?" It's pathetic. Yes, Wisconsin has found itself atop the B1G in recent years with recruiting classes that rank around 7th in the B1G on average. But they somehow don't realize that this is only sustainable if the rest of the B1G sucks at recruiting, too...which they do.
Personally, I've been more inclined to dismiss these types of remarks in the last few weeks. We all know that Ohio State is not dirty recruiting, they're not going after deadbeats that just play football, and that the goal is to dominate the sport. If you're not doing it Ohio State's way, then why do it at all?
I'm curious. I never gauged the Wisky fan reaction to Bert spurning them for the SEC. Those of you who live in Wisky or have info, what was/is the feeling about Bert blowing the trumpet of integrity and virtue only to take the first jet out of Madison a year later?
I work with a bunch on Wisky grads and most of them say they couldn't stand him.
They remark that he is a good recruiter and assessor of talent to which I asked them why it took so long for their TE (I think Pederson) to get a scholarship.
They are also quick to point out that the new coach worked for Urban so he will be great. Most of my workmates are realistic and admit that UFM is the best coach in the B1G.
WIBUCKEYE
It certainly was interesting in Mad Town when Bert left. I tried not to rub in the obvious contradiction of his "B1G doesn't want to be like the SEC" line. Basically Sconnie fans are dismissing it like they never truly liked Bert. They trust Barry Alvarez more than anything so despite them not knowing much about Gary Anderson, you could say they are still optimistic. Most of my friends here are pretty level-headed guys who get that the money was better and understand the need for better recruiting from the B1G. That said, I will bet that the majority of Sconnie fans will continue to demonize UFM and probably took the radio show points as gospel ha.
One things for certain, they better do something if they want to compete with The Ohio State University. As should every other team in the B1G if they want to be relevant.
After pulling in the #37 recruiting class in the country, wisky thinks they need to drop their recruiting standards. Dropped to what, irrelevancy?
An angry fan...rooting for an angry team...led by angry coaches
Hacks using the same argument that ND did for the last 20 years. I guess that now ND has had some success that Wisky feels that they can steal the arguement. As an Alum of OSU I can say it is not low on academic standards. Many professors at OSU are the top of their respective field and would not want to compromise their reputation to make sure a student athlete gets a good grade so he/she can play their respective sport. Besides many of the student athletes I went to school with were doing very well because of the extra tutoring and study tables. Besides didn't their head coach used to be an assistant under UFM at Utah?
