The all-time non-Ohio-born Ohio state team

We've had forums before on the all-time Ohio state teams where we pick our favorite players from teams past at each position. I'm curious who you guys would include if you can't pick guys from Ohio. I gotta believe Krenzel gets a look at QB, Eddie George seems like the obvious choice at RB, and maybe santonio Holmes at WR. The way Urban recruits nationally I envision this list being a bit different in a few years. Who would you all include?

Nice team.

One thing though, I'm not really a big fan of Pryor but he is worlds better at QB than either Germaine or Jackson.

I'd take Pryor I think hands down.

I can totally see that.  TP was a freak.  Something interesting to consider....  Big Ten Coaches voted Joe Germaine the offensive player of the year over Drew Brees in 1998.

Just sayin'

steensn on 1 Feb 2013 - 9:29am #

Yeah, Germaine was a good QB I just think Terrel clearly has the upper edge with his athletic ability.

Stanley Jackson?  Seriously?  I started laughing so hard when I saw that I actually peed a little.  That dude was terrible, with a capital T.  He'd definitely be on the list for worst QBs.

iball's picture
iball on 1 Feb 2013 - 9:35am #

Disagree, while Jackson isnt making any top ten lists for me he was a solid contributor splitting time with Joe G and giving the Bucks ann added demension on offense.

I was waiting for someone to throw Steve Bellisari out there ....

Steve Bellisari belongs on the all-time "wish you never played here" team.

He was sweet on special teams. And atleast we could laugh at his "spirals". Id say Joe Bauserman is the QB on the "wish you never played here" team.

Heyward has to be in there, Brewster, Micheal Jenkins, Maybe Roby by the end of the year, James Lauranitus.

If I recall, Ron Springs went to Ohio State, so Shawn Springs moved with him during his NFL career.

Good team though.

Mike Adams at OT?

osu07asu10's picture
osu07asu10 on 1 Feb 2013 - 1:16pm #

Besides the fact that he is from Columbus...

Mike Adams was a problem child from the moment he set foot on campus, drug arrest, disciplinary action by coaches, part of the Tat5, failed drug test at NFL combine. All of this on top of the fact he largely underperformed his entire career, most of which was probably only masked by ShuggyBear's penchant for false starts, at least he is from Texas.

Horrible..horrible recommendation

That's a helluva lineup. Gotta think there has to be a better OLB than Miller. I'd pose Bellisari ahead of Ryan Miller

I cant believe no one is adding Michael Jenkins to this list. Holy Buckeye anyone?

Chris Gamble is one of the most underrated Buckeyes of all-time.

Malcolm Jenkins...

Glad I took time to read the earlier replies.  Was going to mention Pepper Johnson.  Nate Salley deserves a spot somewhere on the roster.

osu07asu10's picture
osu07asu10 on 1 Feb 2013 - 1:47pm #

Absolutely, Nate Salley was (in my eyes) the last of the Silver Bullets. Agonizing as it was at times to watch Salley sit on a route instead of going for a pass breakup or INT, he patiently waited to blow up a WR.

Quick little tid bit about Salley...After the 2004 scUM game, we were up in the locker room watching the celebration and Lewis (equipment manager) brings Salley's helmet over...His facemask was bent in from laying wood that entire game, a facemask...BENT.

Salley meanwhile is walking around the locker room like a deer in headlights, obviously concussed...kid just left it ALL out on the field.

Excellent MOOP...excellent

Cornelius Green @ QB | Jim Parker @ Guard | Chic Harley @ Running Back | Jack Tatum @ Safety | Pete Johnson @ FB | Will Smith @ DE | Tom Skladany @ Punter | Malcolm Jenkins @ DB | John Frank @ TE | Les Horvath @ HB | Chuck Csuri @ Tackle

Some of these guys went to school in ohio but since you said non-ohio Born - I thought I put them in.  Also thought I'd put out names that haven't been mentioned.  Though I had to mention Tatum again.  Cornelius Green beat out Archie for OSU MVP the second year Archie won his Heisman.  Jim Parker is in the Pro and College Hall of Fames.  Pete Johnson at one point was the closer while Archie was at OSU.  Archie had more yards but Pete had more touchdowns.  Parker graduated from Toledo.  But he was only there for a year and lived most of his life in Georgia, and so he probably thinks of himself as a Georgian and not an Ohioan.  Chic Harley feels like a bit of a cheat as he went to junior and senior high in Columbus, However the "Chic" is short for Chicago and he was there till he was 12.

"If you never saw him (Chic) run with a football, we can't describe it to you. It wasn't like Red Grange or Tom Harmon or anybody else. It was kind of a cross between music and cannon fire, and it brought your heart up under your ears." - James Thurber

This is tough because looking at our history, so many of our best are from right here in Ohio (which is downright awesome). I'd say Joe Germaine, Terrelle Pryor, and Craig Krenzel are your first, second, and third team QBs, respectively. All the other Buckeye great QBs (Schlicter, Rex Kern, Troy Smith) are mostly from Ohio.

So who wins in an all-time battle of Ohio Ohio State players v.s. non-Ohio Ohio State players?  There's been some good ones from PA, FL, NJ, etc.

osu07asu10's picture
osu07asu10 on 1 Feb 2013 - 12:40pm #

I would take Krenzel at QB over any other out of state tOSU signal caller from the past....sorry, I can't hear any of your arguments over Craig's national championship ring.

cplunk's picture
cplunk on 1 Feb 2013 - 12:42pm #

Haha, I hear you. Once of my all time favorite Buckeyes. I fully recognized the area where he is not as good as other QBs that have played for OSU in terms of skills, but all he did was win, win, win.

steensn's picture
steensn on 1 Feb 2013 - 1:35pm #

Wins a win, but put Terrel Pryor on that team and I am confident that the team has wins by larger margins. Krenzel is our Trent Dilfer.

osu07asu10's picture
osu07asu10 on 1 Feb 2013 - 1:50pm #

Krenzel is the only Ohio State QB to win a national title in the last 40 years. Pryor had a very similar team to play with, skilled enough to win it all, he just didn't.

End of the day, I want a QB that wins, and wins national championships...and Craig was that. Pryor, as gifted and freak of an athlete as he is, was not.

Schierbuck's picture

Les Horvath - 1942 National Championship

I see your national championship and raise you a:

1944 Heisman Trophy (QB & HB)

Place of Birth: South Bend, Indiana

Also Cornelius Green's 1974 Buckeyes would have been national champions if the AP voted after the bowls that year instead of before them.  And he won MVP of the Rose Bowl that year.
