Southern Ole Methodist Miss Univeristy.

Those 2013 recruits didn't come cheap, you heard it here (not necessarily first).  Eventually those kids will be found cruising in brand new cars, and the cards of the house of lies will crumble.

Aside from Treadwell's picture of hundred dollar bills there isn't much yet.. I think they took a couple package deals (gave a not-highly regarded younger brother a football offer and a girlfriend). But wasting scholarships, while dumb and not a good way to build a contender, is not an NCAA violation as far as I know

Until I see proof, I will not throw Ole Miss under the bus. In fact, I hope they're clean and succeed to the level of beating Bama and LSU.

Exactly, 8-4 teams all over the top of the SEC are good for everyone.

Except that with TAM's spread and Ol Miss' west coast, we won't be able to ambush 'Bama in the NCS because they will have seen something other than the LSU "power" game

As OSU (and B1G) fans, we may not want to accept this, but the SEC sends the most players to the league.  Ole Miss is a middle of the pack SEC squad, but these guys can go in there, probably start (or at least make the two deep) immediately.  They'll be playing top competition from the beginning and they can just focus on football since academics are not as important in the SEC.  That's all some of these kids want.  Recruits can talk about tradition and academics mattering, but for many of them, they just want the best path to the NFL.  Some don't care about getting an education and many don't really care about a school's past success.  "What can you do for me now?" is the most important factor of all.

Totally agree.

However, the fact that they are not on TV very much has got to be a decided minus for that type of kid

I really began to doubt that everything was just luck when I saw something on TV and didn't know if anyone else noticed... Did anyone see the end of ESPNU's Signing Day coverage? They were recapping the day and making note of how amazing and unexpected Ole Miss' recruiting class was...  And they just happened to have a reporter on campus in Oxford. She stated that Ole Miss was going to celebrate Signing Day with a 'party'... And the honored guests: 2,000 of the football programs highest-contributing boosters! This screamed irony to me.

It screams something alright but irony isn't the word you're looking for.

The truth of the matter is, it's the boosters and their ability to influence things behind the scenes without exposing the program that separates the really good programs from the mediocre ones.

You need look no further than Brady Hoke's recruiting "success", when compared to Rich Rod's head scratching mediocrity, to see what difference an energized alumni base can make.  Fear of Urban and getting a true "michigan man" got them off their wallets and got things moving behind the scenes.  I'm not being critical of Hoke here, it's just how the game is played.  I actually think Brady Hoke is a good dude and a good coach, for the most part.

And it's no different for our beloved Buckeyes.  Or Alabama. Or Notre Dame.  Or Penn State in their prime under Joe ("success with honor and dignity", indeed) Paterno.

The difference between those top programs and Ole Miss, though, is the top programs have booster bases that are big enough and smart enough (usually) that they don't need to take exposure risks to keep their program's momentum going.  Not so for Ole Miss, or any other mid-level program.

Brady Hoke and Urban Meyer don't need to know anything about what happens behind the scenes. and they usually don't.  Not necessarily so for a Hugh Freeze.  To resuscitate a mid-level program and bump it up to another level, you've got to get a lot more personally involved.

So, yeah, there was probably a lot of money and other more direct fringe benefits ("escorts", etc) that Ole Miss was providing, and they'll probably get busted for it down the road.  And I'll probably hypocritically celebrate the fact that an SEC school got knocked down a peg or two.

But should they really?  I personally think the NCAA is going to come crashing down at some point in the not too distant future, simply because I don't think it is sustainable, legally or ethically, to try to maintain that college athletes are "amateuers" and then turn-around and sell what they produce at every opportunity, while hiding under the "voluntary" membership baloney that keeps any actual rules from being enforced with justice (i.e. same rules apply to small and big schools alike).

Irony is the word I was looking for, and quite simply for this reason: The studio crew was questioning "How on earth could Ole Miss get such a great recruiting class?" and then subsequently cut to campus where they showed big-money boosters celebrating said recruiting class. Classic dramatic irony.

I do think it is different for big programs like OSU and UM compared to Ol Miss. If OSU needs an alumni to "sweeten" a recruit, they send a heisman to just talk and sway the kid (Archie, Eddie) and not a rich fat cat. OSU doesn't need to throw money at recruits anymore. They don't need to. Ol Miss does because despite the SEC draw, they don't get classes like that. It has to be money. OSU top 3 class, comes from results and proof.

I do have serious belief that something is going on there. Lets add up the oddities:

1. Some say "it is SEC" but despite Ol Miss being in the SEC, they truly are a bottom rung team. Even with the last vaunted class they got with Eli Manning, nothing came of it. They virtually have no chance at winning the SEC, EVER! Even With Eli they were considered a top SEC program but wasn't even close to winning it all. For Ol Miss to get a class like this is above and beyond the SEC line.

2. Lets play equivalents! In the big ten the elite programs are : OSU, UM, Neb and actually Wisconsin. Middle programs: Illinois, PSU, MSU, Iowa. Bottom: Purdue, NU, Indy, Minn.

SEC, elite: Bama, LSU and Florida, Georgia. Middle: Tenn, ARK, Auburn, South Carolina, TAMU. Bottom: Kentucky, Ol Miss, Miss St, Vandy, Mizzou.

For Ol Miss to get a top 5 recruiting class is like Purdue getting a top 5 class. I just don't see with even the SEC thing how that can happen.

3. Add in a fairly new coach without much of a reputation. It would make sense if Bert did this at ARK but for a guy named Freeze who we barely know anything about is really odd.

4. "Its the south, there is a ton of talent down there". 2 of their biggest recruits are from up north. Tunsil and Treadwell. I can see Bama and LSU pulling a couple of 5 stars from up north, but Ol Miss? If there best of the class came from Mississippi or the south, that would be one thing. How does a school from the south that isn't considered a big time program pull in big recruits from the north and beat out OSU, UM and even the SEC elite. It is unheard of.

This post is absolutely right on! What SMU did by pulling recruits that should have gone to Texas or other major programs made no sense at all. For Ol Miss to bring in this class from outside of their own state is absolutely shady. This isn't Petrino at WKU. This is some guy named Freeze. He doesn't have the reputation to do this. The only difference between SMU and this is that SMU pulled guys from practically in their area. Ol Miss probably hasn't pulled a kid higher than a 3 star north of the Mason Dixin line.

I definitely expect some sort o program destroying violations in the near future. I am a bit surprised the NCAA wouldn't already be looking into this. It is the SEC but still, even Saban has to be wondering what the hell is going on. The day he loses recruits to Ol Miss will be the day hell freezes over (pun intended).

I would bet Yahoo Sports has been or will be nosing around the Ole Miss campus... If there is something going on they will find it
