Losing coaches in lateral moves can't be a good sign for our fat friend up north.

Loss in the immediate realm of recruiting, but they will still be in their rightful spot at #2 in the B1G.

Yeah not a sinking ship, I think Hoke's main assistant coaching experience was as at D-line coach?  So could be a situation were Hoke has a lot of input on the D-line and Montgomery wanted full control of it, which hes offered at OU for.

That is worth an upvote by itself. Although I wouldn't call them a "sinking ship," losing a coach to another team cannot be viewed as a victory.

I would hardly call losing a coach a sinking ship. Remember this post when we lose 1 or more coaches next year, especially since it will probably be Herman.

Junior Samples's picture
Junior Samples on 23 Feb 2013 - 8:19pm #

If Herman would leave to be OC at a comparable program, many here would think the sky was falling.

buckeyechad's picture
buckeyechad on 23 Feb 2013 - 8:35pm #

It'd be more comparable to if like Ed Warinner went to another program, no one would think it's more than a minor loss. Now imagine going to a Michigan blog afterwards and see they are asking if Ohio State is a sinking ship due to the loss of one of our line coaches. You would think they are being ridiculous to even suggest that.

Bj Mullens over Sully's picture
Bj Mullens over... on 23 Feb 2013 - 8:47pm #

Id rather not lose Warinner lol, Guys completely changed around our o-line.  Might've arguably been our best unit last season.

Besides, you could argue that Montgomery left for a better football program.

Plus anytime Missagain loses what many fans felt was their best recruiter it's a blow for blue and a plus for us

Battles are sometimes won by generals; wars are nearly always won by sergeants and privates. Football is no different, the guys down in the trenches win the games, not the coach.

Didn't see the Herman comment, my bad. Giving my opinion on the subject is also part of the conversation though. Michigan is easily in position to be the second best team in the conference, losing a D-line coach hurts but doesn't really change that much.

I'll bet we lose 2-3 assistants after this year, it might be for head coaching positions, but it won't make us anything close to a sinking ship and neither are they.

It will hurt their recruiting a bit, but I expect they'll hire another good coach.

HolyBuckeye1093's picture
HolyBuckeye1093 on 23 Feb 2013 - 11:23pm #

It's a blow to their recruiting more than the on field coaching. Now if scUM lost Mattison, that would be a huge blow to both recruiting and their on field execution. IMO I think Mattison has had a greater impact to their recent success than Hoke has. That team and esp the defense was the laughing stock of CFB. Mattison took a defense that was worse than 100th ranked and made it one of the better ones in CFB.

In my book, Mattison might as well be the real head coach.

Yeah last week he was their best recruiter and the reason they had such a great class in 13. Now this week it will be Meh. No big loss. They're so pathetic scUM fans make me laugh! In places they don't like to talk about deep inside themselves they know their team is not nearly as relevant in CFB anymore no matter what they say in public! And it's killing them!

Because they wouldn't let me go for 3!

I think it would be similar to us losing Mike Vrabel, where we lose a good a coach and a great recruiter. It would hurt us but definitely not sink us.

I heard Hoke was spotted at the Golden Corral taking a non traditional approach to coaching a d-line.  You see the line at GC is difficult to penetrate and The Large One after many many years of observing recognizes this.  No person is going to get between a patron and their chicken fingers and desert bar.

About the best time to happen, honestly. Plenty of time for them to replace him with someone... Big loss for them considering who they are trying to get. Wonder if McDowell will consider Oklahoma now.

Junior Samples's picture

It was never my opinion that the teams play would suffer because this guy left.

The question is, does the departure indicate a lack of confidence/stability in the direction of the program.

it can help our recruiting efforts AGAINST tsun, but as far as in the actual state of michigan, i don't think it changes anything.  i remember reading that coaches there are assigned geographical areas to be primary recruiter of.  i believe fred jackson (rb coach) is the primary recruiter for the state of michigan.  could be wrong here.  montgomery, however, will be missed as a recruiter there.  i'm sure he's a good DL coach, but hoke and mattison have that covered

A "sinking ship" ?  Is the OP being serious?  If they lost multiple coaches, or Hoke or Mattison in COMBINATION with some other negative event, maybe then they could use terms like "sinking ship."

Short of that, this just looks like a poor attempt at schadenfreude.  Michigan is fine, and looks to be in position to have another huge recruiting class in '13.

When big time programs (be it pro or college) come after assistants, that means the head coach is doing a good job.  Sorry to tell you, but there's no sinking ship in Ann Arbor.

tennbuckeye19's picture
tennbuckeye19 on 26 Feb 2013 - 2:29pm #

I don't think the ship is sinking in AA, but your statement isn't totally correct. Coaches leave programs all the time and not just because "the head coach is doing a good job". There's plenty of reasons why coaches take other jobs. They leave for better opportunities, for better pay, for family reasons, or they take lateral moves because of issues in their current positions, among other reasons.

Buckeyevstheworld's picture
Buckeyevstheworld on 26 Feb 2013 - 3:03pm #

I'm wondering why some people think this is a lateral move. M*chigan might be trending up to some, but Oklahoma has been the better football program in the last 13 years.

I disagree in many ways, but, in short, a lot can change in 13 years (Athletic facilities, coaching staffs, athletic directors, etc).  It's subjective, but it's much more than just W/L record.  Most would put Michigan and Oklahoma in the top 15 college programs.  Mine would look something like this (in no order):

Alabama
LSU
Michigan
OSU
PSU
ND
Florida
Texas
Oklahoma
USC
Oregon
Georgia
Nebraska
Stanford
Florida State

Some of those have had more recent success, while some haven't been dominant for a while.  PSU is clearly a unique situation.  Most of these schools would qualify as someone's dream job.  You can make points going from one to the other, but, overall, most of these would be ~ to lateral moves.

Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!
