Roll Tide Roll

It was a matter of time before it started crashing down!  Deer antler spray and now robbery and fraud!

It's probably just a misunderstanding with a new booster that doesn't quite understand the payment method for the players yet. But I'm sure this will all go away like the rest of them.

Edit: Eddie Williams was also arrested sunday for having a handgun without a license. I'd say that's only two strikes so he should still be good and the same goes for calloway after his drug arrest in 2011.

I thought the same thing... Saban doesn't have to cut anyone this year.  He can just kick them off for robbery and fraud.

A friend of mine who went to Georgia shared this with me, so it's only right I pass it along.

While it certainly doesn't hurt my feelings to hear about Alabama players getting arrested, I'm always a little fearful of getting too carried away with another team's misery and wonder what, if anything, could be around the corner for OSU players.

Right. I also think the school's response is more important than the fact that a player committed the crime.

This is so true...I gave a friend who was a UGA fan crap about AJ Green selling his jersey. We all know how that turned out.

You brought a valid point of being worried what is going on at our own backyard, being under NCAA probabtion and even minor violations (peeing on the bar backwall or driving your Mom's car who happened to smoke pot, wink wink!! ) might hurt us down the road thats why tOSU have established new compliance office.

And so far they are doing a good job.

And why do you think the ticket costs went up gotta pay for compliance!

Buckeye_in_SEC_... on 12 Feb 2013 - 1:29pm #

Ticket prices are going up just like everything else.  Goods are getting more expensive to pay for,  therefore the university passes the expense along to the consumer.  Universities will eventually shoot themselves in the foot.  People will start staying home in their warm and cozy houses to watch every angle of the game on TV.  I'm about to build a new house.  In my man cave there will be pre-wired surround sound with an 80" TV, and a recliner.  I might attend 1 game a year in the future and it will probably be the B1G title game.

Ticket costs went up to cover the millions they are putting back into the stadium this offseason.....i guess compliance would be a close second

Ohio State has a host of safeguards in place to make sure our kids don't get into trouble while we're on probation.

Safeguards are all well and good, but kids are kids and we can't watch over them 24/7. All we can hope for is to educate them on the consequenses of any poor decisions they may make and hope they make rational decisions.

nothing first about the actual reason for the article

As if this is the code to say... he's a nobody Tide Fans don't worry this will all get swept away

Are we forgetting about the PEDs, oversigning, and the line coach who asked a recruit to transfer schools so they could fix his grades last year?  It's a snowball affect.  Journalists will start digging up info.

BuckeyeBoyer85's picture
BuckeyeBoyer85 on 12 Feb 2013 - 1:49pm #

I doesn't seem like much will come of the PED charges, unless the NCAA gets involved which I hadn't heard. Oversigning is an issue at multiple programs, and I would think schools like TA&M would get a strong look before 'Bama. However, the point you make about journalists digging things up is correct. All it takes is a well placed source and a Yahoo! Sports article to get the NCAA hounds sniffing around. I'm just not ready to say it's all starting to fall apart.

Speaking of the deer antler spray (people actually believe this stuff does anything?), I heard a commercial on 97.1 the fan in Columbus yesterday where Complete Nutrition is now peddling it.  I guess there will always be someone out there to buy into that kind of stuff.

It's actually been proven to be quite effective. I wouldn't exactly call this "snake oil".

Alhan's picture

Proven eh?  Just like they "proved" the stickers that they "encode" with special "frequencies" so they aren't negatively affected by all of the cell phone signals in the stadium on game day work?

Read this article on The Huffington Post.  The relevant section states:

A small study of questionable merit (it has never been scientifically reviewed or published in any journal) claims weightlifters who used the supplement for 10 weeks had some measurable strength gains when compared with weightlifters who were given a placebo, CNBC reports.

But other, more credible studies rebut that finding. Researchers of a 2012 report in the New Zealand Medical Journal said, "Claims made for velvet antler supplements do not appear to be based upon rigorous research from human trials, although for osteoarthritis the findings may have some promise."

I would label this to be exactly snake oil.

In today's sports world, dopers tend to be way ahead of the curve in regards to enhancing performance illegally. Studies today are kind of meaningless...you show me one study that says the sky is blue, I'll show you another that says its grey. I highly doubt hundreds/thousands of athletes and bodybuilders take this stuff without knowing that it works.

Alhan's picture
Alhan on 12 Feb 2013 - 4:36pm #

Just show me the scientific proof.  The argument that hundreds or thousands of athletes and bodybuilders can't be wrong doesn't hold much water with me.

I don't think you can say there is enough "FDA style", sanctioned, scientific proof for either side of the argument. My point here is that cheaters don't take stuff that doesn't work. There just isn't enough known about it yet to say it doesnt(or does) work. So without any scientific proof, I'm going to err on the side of those looking for a performance boost...because, again, why would this product be so popular in doping circles if there wasn't SOME benefit.

In this article:

Professional Athletes are prone to pseudoscience. First, they want an edge, any edge to help them recover from injuries, feel better, perform more. Many professional golfers use to endorse the bracelets – stating they felt better, hit better, and helped cure their aches and pains. Those bracelets have all been proven to be shams, and some have been removed from the market. Although in a small corner of my golf pro shop you can still obtain them.

and

The athletes are driven by their “trainers” who are individuals of suspect backgrounds. Suspect meaning they are not trained in critical science. They hear something, they don’t check the literature, the next thing you know they pass the information on to others. “Hey, this stuff works for me, it will help you.” They have no science.

The article also talks about the delivery of the IGF-1 and that the spray doesn't have enough and can't be absorbed anyway.

My point is, athletes are looking for an edge and will try anything.  It isn't real.

Yes, because there might be IGF-1 in it.  Since they can't urine test for it, they just ban stuff that might have it in it.

What are the cops crazy! Bama players don't get into trouble for robbery and playing with guns. Something isn't right.

oh........sorry. I just realized that the bama players might have forgotten their licenses that specifically states they are "alabama football players that are allowed to break the law without repercussion". Having unlicensed guns in the trunk and beating up  some dude for his credit cards is actually standard daily activities. They just forgot their identities that says its okay.

*I tried to find the scene in the movie LA Story where it is standard to get robbed right at the atm. If anyone has that, funny scene!
