I know that OSU will never go independent but lets play the what if game.
Positives:
make your own schedule
All the money you earn would be OSU
possible TV deal like Notre Dame
Could create a separate network...likely doubtful
Make new rivals.
I am sure there is more but I will leave that up to others to add.
Cons:
The non revenue sports would have to be decreased...not enough total rev in my opinion
Traditional match ups disappear...no rivalry with TSUN...they would sever ties because we left...lol
no built in bowl games if we are not a top rated team
may upset the alumni lose donations
what do you guys/gals think...please this is just a what if have fun with it.

lets not play what if...
We are nearly 7 months away from playing football. There's no other game to play on a football forum other than what if.
As for the OP, I'm about as sick of the B1G as I've ever been, but it's family. Whaddaya gonna do?
I am sorry if this offended you I simply wanted to have fun with the topic.
The only thing that would happen if OSU left is the B10 would become the ACC (a basketball conference) and continue to be a mediocre at best and bottom dweller at worst in football.
I'm not much for going independent, but I would entertain the idea of leaving the B1G. I doubt it would ever happen and I don't know where OSU would go, but I wouldn't be against exploring other options.
There's no way we'd make as much coin as the BTN nets us. Not to mention, we're a good academic school--but we're not elite like ND. Big Ten money funds a lot of our research, too.
While I agree we wouldnt make as much money as the BTN makes for us, but I have to disagree with Big Ten money funding research. During my time in school all of our research money came from federal foundations/research organizations and private companies. Now the athletic budget is a different story
“There are some people addicted to alcohol, some people are addicted to gambling,” Luginbill said. “Urban Meyer is addicted to football, and he’s addicted to winning.”
But where do we go to help land the federal and private grants? the CIC, which is essentialy the B10.
Cause I couldn't go for three
The CIC certainly is a factor in grants, however OSU receives a ton from the NIH, and we're 2nd in privately-funded research amongst all public universities in the US, 2nd only to Texas, and ahead of schools like Michigan, UVa and UCLA. So while the CIC plays a factor in funding, OSU would do well on its own. I'm however not a proponent of leaving the B1G, as we gain far more from staying a member than if we were to become independent, especially in regards to TV revenue.
Definitely not.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ <--------- Why it will never happen. Too much money to be made staying in the Big Ten.
Putting aside the question of financial feasibility, the only appealing part of going independent would be the schedule. Just dropping our usual trek through the MAC and replacing it with a couple of BCS opponents each year should be plenty, but with the continued dilution of the B1G --sorry, but it's hard to get excited about playing Rutgers and Maryland each year-- we might be losing opportunities to schedule high-profile OOC opponents. This will presumably become an even more pressing issue if the league continues to expand.
I'm not too crazy about going independent, as a fan. Like others have said, we'd be freed up to schedule more toward our tastes, but we'd also be missing out on our traditional games. I like knowing the B1G family, who we hate and why. It's a tradition and kind of stability in these times of change.
As long as Michigan stays on the schedule every single year, being in the BIG versus being an Ind. wouldn't make much difference to me.
Actually, I believe the OP has a good point. I think OSU would do just fine as an independent. And I agree that it would open the door for some more marquee matchups potentially.
I'm a fencesitter on this one though b/c I realize being part of a conference does have its perks.
Champions Bleed Scarlet & Gray
get VA....GA Tech.....UNC.....Florida State...TX....ND and have a super conf of 20 members.....
are we talking about footall only like ND? either way i don't think it's a good idea for OSU to leave the B1G. and regarding scheduling good OOC opponents, i don't think many team would want to play OOC once conference game starts; we would be hard pressed to find good matchups in late october and november.
I like being in the big ten.
Okay... What if we left the B1G, got Michigan to leave the B1G talked Texas into leaving the Big 12 then when the Big 12 imploded snag Oklahoma and TCU from the mess, talk to Notre Dame, pull Miami and Florida State from a sinking ACC, and BOOM we have an 8 team super conference set up to dominate college football.
Future expansion could possibly include Nebraska and Penn State once the B1G becomes a joke.
That is not bad Idea...I would add that being national you would need to have a USC or Oregon that way you cover all the TV markets.
Yeah I thought of that but I figured that the Pac 12 and SEC were solid and not breaking up in this scenario.
We did it. We left the Western Conference/Big Nine. 1907-1916. It's how we got started playing you guys. Because before that, our big rival was the University of Chicago.

I'd love to see it but it won't happen. Who would you like to see us play?
scUM every year
ND on a rotating basis
A couple other B1G teams that are close by for those who want to travel but not fly. Maybe Purdue, Indiana, MSU, PSU, NW.
Play 2 PAC 12 teams a year
Play 2 Big 12 teams a year
If you can get any SEC teams to travek north play a couple of them every year.
Play a couple east coast teams each year.
Well, Ohio State would lose billions of research money and football couldn't possible make enough to offset the loss. The end result would therefore be less money in the football program, which would mean worse facilities and worse assistant coaches.
I'm fairly certain OSU going independent would mean we'd be a worse team on an annual basis within a decade.
Hate it
I'm a BIG fan of the B1G, and I mean that literally and figuratively.
An angry fan...rooting for an angry team...led by angry coaches
Going independent would be hard. You'd most likely bring in less money. Playoff access might get restricted. Harder to maintain rivalries.
With that saiid, I think OSU is one of a handful of universities that might be able to pull it off. It would be neat to be able to try to schedule more elite teams on a regular basis.
Ultimately though, I think we would all prefer to stay in the B1G after about 7 or 8 years of independence.
Big Ten--What a concept-How about lets get back to ten schools.
Lets do a contest where you get points for how you finish your season.
1st-10
2-9
3-8
4-7 and so on,with no points to any teams below 11.It will be an All-Sports contest-all teams compete,no team no points.1 thru 10 stay in. 11 down, exit stage left.
Add into the equation,to appease academia we award points for a academic challenge.
could you imagine the competion for that last spot at the very end for that baseball team or 4x100 M race. People would tune in and watch meaningless games<or what were.
We don't need to expand,we need to diet and get rid of some of the fat.
Rutgers and Maryland, are you kiddin me>If that was the case we shoulda got Mizzu-OK-
knucklehead
For what it's worth, I think that both Rutgers and Maryland are better gets than Mizzou.
We're doing really well in the B1G. Why the hell would we leave? Best rivarly is sports. Conference Championships. Top recruiting classes. Great Money. Stability.
I get that the B1G competition right now is medicre. But so is the Pac12, B12, ACC, & BigEast(lol). Listen, right now nobody can stand up to the SEC as a conference, not the B1G, not anybody else.
It's not like we've helped the B1G reputation. Us losing the two national championship games got the whole B1G bashing trend to start anyways. When B1G's top dogs start kicking ass nobody can say anything about our conference.
I would love it just to bash in Notre Dame's arrogant face every year.
Yeah definitely, but I also enjoy bashing in tsuns face every year as well.
Also your profile story is awesome.
Thanks brobeans
Sincerely,
Thad Castle
